Chapter 254 When I was a primary school class monitor, I was in charge of fifty people, so being a platoon leader would be just right.
A player, on the verge of certain death, crouched low and cautiously approached a boulder blackened by artillery fire. Behind the boulder, a figure lay sprawled out in an extremely relaxed posture, seemingly oblivious to the imminent danger on the battlefield. That was their squad leader—BUG.
"Class monitor, class monitor," the player called softly.
BUG didn't respond, only making soft snoring sounds, still lying on the rock, motionless, like a piece of abandoned rag.
The player sighed, then without hesitation lifted his foot and stomped hard on the bug's back.
"Oh ho ho... Holy crap, you're rebelling?!" BUG screamed and sprang up instantly, baring his teeth and glaring at the newcomer.
"Alright, stop pretending. I know you're not asleep." The man waved his hand, his tone relaxed. "The trench on the hillside to the east has collapsed again, and water is flooding in. Go and deal with it quickly."
"Can I pretend I'm asleep and didn't hear you?" BUG said reluctantly, rubbing his back.
"So I'm here to make sure you hear me?" The person facing death had a "I'm doing this for your own good" look on their face, pointed into the distance, and said, "Alright, our whole class is on guard duty up ahead. You're the only one who can fix this. Hurry up and go."
BUG got up cursing and slapped the dirt off his butt: "I spent two whole hours yesterday shoveling the dirt out with an entrenching tool, and it's broken again today? Is this some kind of shoddy construction?"
"Friendly troops drove their tanks over there," the man explained. "The Leman Russ, you know, is a heavy tank, so it had a significant impact on our trenches."
“Oh, right,” he added as if suddenly remembering something, “there’s also a Leman Rustank stuck in the trench. You can take care of it while you’re at it. It’s right next to the landslide site. I guess it was trying to go around it but got stuck.”
BUG's expression froze instantly, his eyes widening: "How do we solve this?! Pry Leman Rustank out with my entrenching tool? Are you kidding me?"
The one who was about to die patted BUG on the shoulder, with an encouraging smile on his face: "Use your imagination, squad leader! I believe in you!"
Just as the bug was about to malfunction, an unfamiliar voice suddenly came from the side, tinged with urgency: "Bug? Where's the bug?"
Bug's attention was immediately drawn to it. He raised his hand and shouted, "Here! What's up?"
A player dressed in a communications soldier's uniform jogged up, panting. Bug glanced at the name above the player's head; hmm, someone he didn't recognize.
"What's up?" BUG asked.
“A whole regiment was wiped out,” the Guard player said quickly, catching his breath. “In order to get back to the front line as soon as possible, the command has decided to temporarily adjust the organization. You’ve been promoted to temporary platoon leader! Forty brothers will be resurrecting next to you in a little while, so get ready!”
"Huh?" Upon hearing this, BUG was stunned for a moment, seemingly not quite understanding. Then, his eyes suddenly lit up, and his face instantly lit up with unprecedented ecstasy.
"Ah! Hahahaha!!" He raised his hands high, jumped up like a child who had received candy, and shouted excitedly, "I don't have to dig trenches by myself anymore! I don't have to pry open tanks by myself anymore! Hahahaha!"
The player who had just been encouraging the bug was dumbfounded. After a long while, he finally managed to stammer, "What the hell? How could someone like you be promoted to platoon leader?"
"What do you mean 'someone like me'?" BUG retorted immediately, a hint of smugness on his face. "Damn, was my class monitor position in elementary school fake? A platoon only had about fifty people, just right!"
Having just been promoted to platoon leader, BUG was now in high spirits, completely devoid of the resentment he felt while digging trenches. He strode confidently toward the Leman Rustank stuck in the trench.
From afar, he could see the massive Leman Russ tank tilted and stuck in the mud of the trench. Several crew members were around it, sweating profusely as they tried to push the steel behemoth out with crowbars and their own strength. However, five men were clearly no match for a Leman Russ weighing tens of tons; the tank didn't budge an inch.
The crew members were somewhat taken aback when they saw BUG approaching. They had expected an engineer squad or a repair crew to come, but instead, only a seemingly carefree player showed up. "Uh, why are you the only one here, bro?" one of the crew members asked, putting down his crowbar in confusion.
BUG waved his hand: "In a little while, dozens of people will respawn next to me. You guys tell me your problems first, so I'll know what to do."
“Okay,” the other person nodded, pointing to the tank’s tracks and hull. “Well, it’s actually quite simple. We’ve been charging for too long, and part of the drive shaft has broken. During the previous assaults, we mostly encountered flat terrain, so it could barely function under low loads, which is why we didn’t notice it before. Now that we’ve hit a ditch, it’s completely broken under high loads. Also, the teeth on the drive sprocket are almost worn out. Tsk, troubles just keep piling up.”
"Oh," despite BUG's seemingly enlightened expression, he didn't understand a single word, but he still nodded seriously, "I see."
“Sigh, I told you so, we should have used a tank trailer,” another crew member complained. “Otherwise, the tank has to run the whole way on its own, which is too much of a wear and tear on it and it simply can’t handle it.”
"Who would have thought we'd be driving a thousand kilometers in one go before we came?" the first member retorted. "It's because the Lemanrus has always been very resistant to grass and can be driven without any problems, that's why we didn't bring a tank trailer. Who knew this would be so intense?"
“Um,” BUG interrupted their increasingly off-topic conversation, offering what he considered a constructive suggestion, “how about we try pushing it first? What if we can get it up there?”
The crew members looked at each other, feeling that the chances were slim, but since the new guy had said so, they had no choice but to do as he said.
"Okay, everyone!" a crew member shouted, then climbed into the driver's cab. "I'll go in and start the engine to see if we can get any power."
With the five crew members and the bug, the six of them strained, pressing their shoulders against the side armor of the Lemanrus, emitting "heave-ho! heave-ho!" shouts. Inside the cockpit, the engine roared, but it was clearly idling, producing very little power, and the tracks were only slowly and laboriously crawling along.
With everyone pushing with all their might, the behemoth was actually lifted a little bit, its tracks scraping against the mud, seemingly showing a slight sign of breaking free. The crew's spirits lifted, and they pushed even harder. However, the Lemanrus's weight was simply too astonishing; after lifting it only a foot or so, everyone felt their strength exhausted, and the tank began to sway, on the verge of sliding back into the mud pit.
At that critical moment, a tall figure appeared at the rear of the Lemanrus with lightning speed. He uttered no sound, simply bracing his massive hand against the tank's hindquarters. The heavy power armor emitted a low servo hum, and then, an incredible force erupted instantly!
Under everyone's watchful eyes, the previously teetering Lemanrus was easily pushed out of the mud. Its tracks effortlessly rolled over the edge of the trench and came to a steady stop on flat ground.
"Oh—! It worked!"
"awesome!"
The crew members erupted in deafening cheers and excitedly high-fived each other.
Bug suddenly turned around and looked at the Space Marine who had single-handedly pushed the tank aside.
"Reinhard?" BUG blurted out in surprise. "What are you doing here? Didn't you say the fighting was intense and Tyron could break through the defense at any moment?"
“That’s why I came to find you,” said Reinhard, the Space Marine of the Imperial Scythe, tilting his head and glancing around. “I’m sending you, who’s just been promoted to platoon leader, to take some men and provide support. The front lines definitely need more manpower. Where are those forty men? I don’t see them.”
BUG's smile froze on his face. He then remembered that the "underlings" he had just been promoted to hadn't been revived yet.
“Uh, let’s go ahead first,” BUG coughed, forcing himself to calm down. “They’ll be here soon.”
