Chapter 70: The veins weren't filled with blood, they were full of sedatives.
After a full day of grueling training, the players have successfully parachuted from an altitude of several thousand meters and landed steadily within a hundred meters of their destination. Whether this successful landing is a hard or soft landing, and whether they will survive... well, that depends entirely on luck.
At this moment, the paratrooper players were inside a Valkyrie assault transport aircraft. The cabin was cramped and dark, the metal skin cold and hard, and the air filled with the mixed smells of engine oil, sweat, and gunpowder. Even inside this heavy armor, they could hear the sharp whistling of bullets or energy beams whizzing through the air, the "bang bang" of impacts, and the hissing and friction of energy flow.
Each sound was accompanied by a slight jolt of the aircraft, as pilot Li Yongsi dodged sporadic ground fire with extremely precise and fluid movements.
However, the players inside the cabin seemed completely detached from the situation, chatting and laughing without any sense of tension from being on the battlefield. Some leaned against the cabin wall, idly picking at their nails, while others enthusiastically shared anecdotes from the previous night, their faces beaming with relaxed smiles.
A player reached out and gently touched the arm of the player next to him, [Jogris Top Lane], with his knuckles. He had a cigarette dangling from his mouth and said with a hint of sarcasm, "The success of this operation depends on you, Fatty."
"Go to hell!" Jogris, the top laner, slapped the hand away in annoyance. His face, slightly puffy from years of staying up late, was full of displeasure. "Damn it, who gave me this nickname, Fatty Baby?!"
Upon hearing this, the other players burst into laughter, some even doubled over with mirth, pointing at him and jokingly saying, "Who told you to voluntarily implant a tactical nuclear bomb inside yourself?"
"Tell me, isn't it a perfect fit? A fat guy plus a little boy," another person added, eliciting laughter from the cabin and filling it with a cheerful atmosphere.
Just then, Li Yongsi's voice, tinged with static, came through the cabin communicator: "Get ready, we're almost at our destination."
Then, a barely perceptible chuckle appeared in his voice: "Especially Fatty, don't make a mistake and accidentally activate the tactical nuclear missile and turn it into fireworks in the sky."
The laughter in the cabin intensified, with some players even slapping their thighs, tears welling up in their eyes. The top laner, his face flushed with anger, slammed his fist on the cabin wall and yelled, "I already told you I'd give myself some ice-cold serum beforehand! Can you guys please stop laughing?!"
"Attention in the cabin, I'm about to open the cabin door, 3, 2, 1..." Li Yongsi's voice came again.
With a violent whooshing sound, the cabin doors slowly opened to the sides, instantly tearing apart the dim light inside the cabin. A cold and wild gust of air rushed in, carrying the chill unique to high altitudes. All the players' hair and clothes were blown backward, and through the cabin doors, they could see the pitch-black night sky outside, and the blurry outlines of the city lights below.
For players experiencing their first real-world match, even those who had been joking and laughing before couldn't help but take a deep breath, trying to calm the tension welling up inside them. The top laner, Jogris, didn't hesitate to pull out a syringe filled with a pale blue liquid, which gleamed faintly under the cold cabin lights, and then plunged it into his left arm. His muscles tensed instantly, but quickly relaxed.
"How does it feel to have your veins full of tranquilizers?" came the voices of other players.
"Very good, I'm calm now." The top laner's voice became low and steady, as if there was no emotional fluctuation. He felt all his emotions, including tension, anger, and even his previous playfulness, recede like the tide and disappear without a trace, leaving only his mechanical mental thoughts on how to complete the task.
Why is your head so pointy?
"Fuck off!"
"You can jump!" Li Yongsi's command rang out, and the players leaped from the hatch without hesitation, their bodies tracing arcs through the air like shooting stars as they plummeted towards the ground. The whistling wind instantly drowned out all other noise. The Genestealer Cult on the ground had clearly spotted them as well, and sporadic anti-aircraft fire began to rise. However, their cunning anti-aircraft measures were pitifully few, consisting only of some live ammunition or energy beams, sparse and ineffective in the vast night sky. Unless one was extremely unlucky, no one would be hit.
Everyone stared intently at the ground, their eyes fixed on the ground, silently calculating the distance, ready to deploy their gravity parachutes at any moment. Their bodies were taut, their muscles poised for action.
Just then, a laser beam streaked across the sky, followed immediately by a deafening explosion near the players. A burst of orange-red flames instantly illuminated the surrounding night sky, accompanied by a scorching shockwave. Everyone jumped in fright, their hearts sinking: Had the top laner been hit? Had the nuke detonated too early?!
The players immediately looked towards the top laner's direction and found him unharmed, falling in a perfect pose. The top laner also looked in the direction from which the sound came, only to see that all that remained was a rapidly dissipating cloud of smoke; his teammate had turned into a ball of sparks dissipating in the air.
"Who pulled the gravity parachute fuse so fast?!" Li Yongsi's speechless voice, tinged with a helpless sigh, echoed in everyone's minds through the communicator. "See, you got picked off by a sharpshooter, didn't you? I've emphasized this so many times, I thought you wouldn't make this mistake again!"
However, the players didn't have the energy to answer at this moment, because they had already reached the distance where they needed to deploy their gravity parachutes. Almost simultaneously, everyone seized the opportunity and decisively pulled the fuses.
The gravity parachute activated in mid-air, and the enormous cushioning force jolted their bodies violently, but this time there were no problems. Everyone successfully stabilized themselves in the air, and their descent speed suddenly slowed down.
Just as everyone breathed a sigh of relief, a piercing scream came from the side. Looking in the direction of the sound, they saw a player with a charred hole the size of a bowl in his waist, clearly struck by a laser weapon; the wound was still emitting nauseating black smoke.
"I forgot to turn off the safety on my gun..." That was the only desperate last word the player left behind. After his gravitational parachute went out of control, it wobbled and crashed to the ground like a weight.
"...Wow, how can there be such a gem?" Li Yongsi, who was on Valkyrie, naturally received this comment as well.
Fortunately, there were no further mishaps. Although the closer they got to the ground, the denser and more frantic the Genestealer Cult's anti-aircraft fire became, with energy beams and live ammunition weaving together to try to intercept these enemies falling from the sky, the players consciously controlled their gravity umbrellas and, in a tacit manner, surrounded Chogris in the top lane, acting as meat shields to block most of the firepower for him.
So even though players were constantly being hit and their parachutes went out of control, or their bodies were torn apart and they fell like kites with broken strings, Jogris, the top laner, remained completely unharmed. He was tightly protected by his teammates in the center, watching everything with a blank expression.
When they were only 500 meters from the ground, the last player covering the top laner was struck by a thick beam of energy. His body jolted violently in mid-air, and half of his body instantly carbonized. However, with his last strength, he laboriously swung his other intact arm and shouted with all his might towards the still-falling top laner, Jogris: "Come on, Fatty!"
He then plummeted to the ground. In just a few thousand meters of altitude, only the top player remained of the dozen or so paratroopers, falling alone through the air.
The top laner, despite the effects of the Ice Point Essence, remained absolutely calm. His gaze was unwavering as he coldly observed the approaching ground and the cunning, indistinct positions writhing in the lamplight below.
Finally, he saw his target—a magnificent hall constructed of marble-like materials, radiating an eerie glow in the night, the very core of the Genestealer Cult's lair. The top laner also seemed to spot several unusually large units, who, realizing the danger, were frantically trying to crawl out through cracks in the hall to escape.
However, the top laner didn't care. He knew that at this distance, they would definitely not escape the blast radius of a tactical nuclear bomb.
With a thought, he activated the tactical nuclear bomb embedded in his body.
