Chapter 242 Six Movie Queens!

"Director Cheng, we all know your abilities. You are still young, and you will definitely win this award in the future."

Teacher Chen Daoming, who was sitting to Cheng Sheng's left, offered words of comfort.

"It's alright, Professor Chen. I've already won the Best Screenplay award at Venice, so it doesn't matter if I don't win the Best Screenplay award at Cannes," Cheng Sheng said calmly.

Indeed, in his view, it makes no difference whether he wins the Best Screenplay award or not, since it won't affect him anyway.

If I could get it, it would certainly make my resume look much better.

"I wonder who will win Best Actress next?"

"I can't believe it," Da Tian Tian said enviously.

As the female lead in "Three Kingdoms", she should theoretically have a chance to compete for the Best Actress award.

Unfortunately, although she was portrayed as the female lead in "Three Kingdoms," she had very few dramatic scenes and mostly focused on war.

This prevented her from being nominated for Best Actress.

"How many of you think will win this award?" Cheng Sheng asked with a strange smile.

"Several? Director Cheng! Isn't there only one Best Actress?"

Li Heiniu, sitting across from Chen Daoming, asked in confusion.

indeed.

Normally, there is only one Best Actress award.

But this one is different!

Six actresses won awards at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

It was absolutely explosive.

While double-yolk and triple-yolk eggs are not uncommon at film festivals, the miracle of a six-yolk egg is still astonishing.

The Best Actress award was also given to the six actresses who starred in the Spanish film "Volver," including Penelope Cruz, known as the "Spanish Rose," and Carmen Mora.

Presumably, the judges had a difficult choice and had no choice but to distribute their favors evenly.

Looking back at the major film award ceremonies in China, "double yolks" (two winners, two losers) are also quite common.

The Huabiao Awards and the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards have seen multiple people share the title of Best Actor or Best Actress on several occasions.

Compared to this year's Cannes Best Actress award, there's not much to criticize from industry insiders regarding the domestic double Best Actor and Best Actress awards.

In fact, this year's awards not only produced six Best Actress winners, but also five Best Actor winners.

It's fair to say that this year's Best Actor and Best Actress awards are somewhat worthless.

Of course, even earlier, at the 8th Cannes Film Festival in 1955, 6 Best Actress awards and 10 Best Actor awards were also given out.

Sixteen actors won awards for the same work, "The Big Family".

"This movie called 'Return' is amazing; it actually has six actresses competing for the Best Actress award."

When the presenter announced the nominee for Best Actress, Jing Tian was stunned.

“I’ve seen ‘Return.’ It’s a female-centric film, a truly excellent art film, and it deserves awards,” Director Chen said.

While Cheng Sheng and his group were in Cannes, they didn't stay in their own theater every day; sometimes they would go to other theaters to watch other people's movies.

Cheng Sheng also watched "Return," and as Director Chen said, it is indeed a very good film. "Return" truly embodies the spirit of "girls help girls," focusing on the relationships between three generations—grandmother, mother, and daughter—and their female neighbors.

"Return" tells the story of women's survival and self-respect under the threat of gender-based violence.

The story revolves around Remuda, an airport cleaner, who one day returns home to find that her daughter, Paula, has accidentally become her father's murderer in an attempt to stop her husband from sexually assaulting her.

Although shocked, Remuda remained calm and helped dispose of the body for her daughter's sake.

After leaving her alcoholic and good-for-nothing husband, Remda's fate began to change. Good luck came one after another. She took over her neighbor's restaurant by chance, and the business flourished, improving her dire financial situation.

Another miracle also occurred at the same time. The mother, who was burned to death in the cabin with her father four years ago, was actually alive. The three generations of the family reunited and uncovered the unbearable past buried in each other's hearts. In the end, the women in the cabin depended on each other and lived a chaotic but fulfilling life.

The ending is that the female protagonist successfully gets rid of the refrigerator, and the mother continues to live as a ghost.

This movie is truly a tearjerker; all six actresses delivered solid performances, no wonder they all won Best Actress awards.

Most women who watch this movie can't help but shed tears, seeing themselves or their mothers reflected in it, or witnessing women's self-awareness in the face of heavy survival pressures and gender discrimination.

Almodóvar uses a delicate and humorous approach to capture the hysteria of women facing chaos and unease, as well as their composure in the face of unexpected events, and of course, the ugly side of gossipy aunts and uncles.

Under Almodóvar's direction, these women, regardless of their weight or appearance, are endearing because of their human fragility and resilience. They can be greedy for small gains, or they can take care of their dying, lonely neighbors without complaint, even as they complain to each other: "My life is already chaotic enough, don't add to my misfortune."

However, when faced with difficulties, they are able to offer small favors and form close-knit mutual aid circles to overcome the challenges.

Unlike most feminist films that vehemently criticize men or at most offer minor satire of their gun-wielding brutality, "Volver" uses numerous female characters to highlight the strength of a woman who is outwardly gentle but inwardly resilient.

Cheng Sheng greatly admires Almodóvar's portrayal of female roles, because a woman's strength does not necessarily have to be disguised as masculine.

"Huh! Am I hallucinating? Or did the presenter say something wrong?"

Suddenly, after the presenter announced the winner, Mr. Chen Daoming looked puzzled and said...

"It seems like I'm hallucinating too. Six Best Actress winners? How is that possible!" Li Heiniu said in shock.

"We weren't hallucinating, and the presenters weren't wrong either; the six winners were indeed Best Actresses!"

Bao Guoan said, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

This is my first time attending Cannes, and I never expected to run into 'Six Egg Yolks'!
The others were dumbfounded. They had seen double-yolk and triple-yolk eggs before, but a six-yolk egg was truly speechless.

"Is the Cannes Best Actress award worthless?!" Da Tian Tian exclaimed, dumbfounded.

"Director Cheng, judging from your expression, it seems you've guessed there will be six Best Actress winners this year?"

Chen Daoming suddenly noticed that Cheng Sheng looked very calm, as if he had expected this outcome.

"Actually, when I saw that all six actresses from the film 'Volver' were nominated for Best Actress, I had my suspicions. After all, it's not uncommon for a film to have six nominees," Cheng Sheng said casually.

"Cannes already had six egg yolks?" Da Tian Tian exclaimed in surprise.

Chen Daoming pondered for a moment and instantly recalled the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, which indeed produced six Best Actress winners and ten Best Actor winners.

Ten Best Actor winners!

This reminded Director Chen of the Best Actor award, which seemed to have been nominated for Best Actor for a film with five actors.

Could it be this time...?

Director Chen's lips twitched as he considered a possibility. He wondered if competing with these people for Best Actor was lucky or unlucky.
