Chapter 32 Infiltration
Chapter 32 Infiltration
The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit of Elsia.
After disguising themselves, Eugene and Klinshead walked quickly through the corridor with their heads down, sunlight filtering through the stained-glass windows and casting dappled shadows on the floor.
“Uh…it’s worse than we thought,” a silent barrier enveloped the two, so no one but themselves could hear their conversation. Eugene frowned as he recounted his discovery, “I sneaked into the bishop’s room, and the wardrobe was empty…it was ink he had used recently.”
He handed the ink bottle to Klinshead, who then compared the ink inside with the ink on the secret letter in her memory, thus determining the authenticity of the letter.
“Nonsense. Bishop Artus departed for the Holy Land this morning to attend the Ecumenical Council, and Sister Melda, who has always been following him, is now in charge of the church in his place.”
They knew very little about Sister Merda, a highly respected elder, even though she had served in the church longer than they were old enough. Given her status and seniority, it would have been easy for Sister Merda to access Eugene and Clyndich's secrets.
As for Sister Melda, Klinshead could list at least two or three other "suspects," each of whom was a prominent figure in the church.
As she unscrewed the ink bottle and chanted incantations to analyze the ink's composition, Klinshid's expression gradually turned grim.
"The ratio of oak burl to iron salt is wrong. This bottle of ink was last filled half a month ago, and we received the letter a week ago. Given Altus's stingy yet meticulous nature, he wouldn't have used someone else's ink when writing the letter... There's a high chance the letter we received wasn't written by Altus. Alas, Lord Mirad, whom you've been so fond of, was right; we've indeed been used."
Eugene stopped and reached out to stop Klinshead. Footsteps approached from around the corner of the corridor ahead.
The two heroes exchanged a glance, and Klinshid softly chanted an incantation. An invisible curtain rose from beneath their feet, distorting the light and obscuring their figures. Although they were already disguised, it was best to remain undetected.
There were two people who arrived, both silent. One was a tall, middle-aged nun, and the other was a thin man following behind her with a furrowed brow.
Sister Melda and Deacon Tum were both on Clinshid's list of suspects.
Only after they had walked far away and disappeared at the end of the corridor did Klinshid dispel the spell and reveal herself.
“Suspicious. I don’t remember them having any connection.” Klinshead pouted, feeling furious that she had been so foolishly fooled by a fake letter.
“Krinshide, you should be able to reconstruct the ink composition of that letter, right… Could you analyze those oak burls to determine their origin and then find out the source of the fake letter?” Eugene whispered.
"You've been reading too many detective novels, haven't you? I'm not Lilim, casting spells is as easy as breathing. Besides, how could I possibly know the origin of the oak for each type of oak burl?" Klinshid tightened the ink bottle, quite impatient.
"So, you mean...you can't do it...?"
"Stop with your clumsy provocation. But I didn't say I couldn't do it. The freaks at the farmers' association must have relevant samples; we can just go there and compare them." Klinshid twirled a strand of hair at her temple with her fingers, her face grim. "But the answer to this question is far too obvious; anyone with even a little political savvy would probably guess wrong."
“Ray…Rescateye?” Eugene said after thinking for a moment.
"Who else could it be? Besides that stupid country that takes advantage of having many heroes to collect protection money everywhere, and sends troops to assist in national defense if they don't pay, who else would be so bored as to write a letter to trick two naive heroes?" Rolling her eyes, Klinshde's speech gradually quickened. "Why us? I've figured it out too. If we succeed, those beasts can say that Visergran's food security is threatened, and as a major food-importing country, they can't sit idly by and need their heroes to intervene and supervise."
“For example, if we fail, and things turn out the same as now…” “They can turn around and accuse the church of Visergran of sending heroes to frame the agricultural cooperative and trying to incite a civil war, and then they can use the excuse of maintaining order in the surrounding area to send troops. Those bastards have a good plan, it’s the same no matter what.” Waving her hand, Klinshid continued, “Right now, the delegation from Rescade is probably negotiating with the king… that old geezer Artus always chooses this time to set off… we’ve really messed up this mess. Are you still planning to continue investigating? The mole who leaked our secrets should be among the people I mentioned before.”
“Yes. Even if it's Rescade, we… cannot back down.” Eugene paused for a moment, then spoke, his tone firm, “Stay with me in Elcia to help Lord Mirad, Klinshid.”
Feeling her face burning under Eugene's gaze, Klinsid didn't continue to provoke him, but simply nodded slightly.
As night fell, the two groups that had been conducting separate investigations returned to their hotel.
"...Those, these are...?"
Eugene looked at the gift boxes covering the floor and almost hesitated to step on them.
"This is the outfit I picked out for our dear Lord Mirad's date tomorrow! This one suits his figure very well, that one has nice material and a good cut, and when he wears this one, doesn't it make you feel like Lord Mirad is back to the time when he slew the evil dragon?" Hiolitta picked up the clothes and talked eloquently, while Mirad just sat on the bed without saying a word, his face gradually darkening.
After the investigation, he intended to climb over the embassy wall to talk to Kiessfield, but was instead dragged to a clothing store by Hiolitta, who used him as a clothes hanger to try on clothes all night.
Why must he suffer this calamity? Why must it be him?
"A date tomorrow?" Klinsid's expression twisted. "You're going on a date during a crisis...?"
"...It wasn't a date, it was an interrogation..."
With the clothes laid out there, Mirand knew his explanation was somewhat weak. "What did you find out?"
“Lord Mirad must have his reasons for doing this… By the way, that gold-trimmed dress is quite nice, it matches Lord Mirad’s hair color very well…” Eugene said, seizing the opportunity.
"Shut up, you brainless fan..." Klinshid covered her forehead. The saint she thought was reliable had given her a rude awakening, and her dignified image was slightly crumbling. "I've investigated, and if I'm not mistaken, it's Rescateyer. I have some clues about the mole."
“The result is the same as ours.” Mirad nodded and explained about the transfer magic circle.
“Tsk, I knew it… You’re so bold as to set up a magic circle in the city, and I didn’t even notice… Well, since you’ve got the time to go on a date, you must have come up with a good plan, right? In case the negotiations break down and those insects in Rescade really want to give us a taste of our own medicine.” Klinshid looked at Siolitta, who was smiling as she folded her clothes and put them together.
"Have."
With a deep sigh, Mirad had never felt so mentally exhausted.
