"What did you say?"
"I'm telling you, you're out of your mind. Get lost."
"Jordan".
The manager arrived at the store before things got out of control.
"Sorry, manager, I'm trying to explain to this idiot that we're an ice cream shop."
"You're fired." The manager said expressionlessly.
Hal was stunned for a moment.
“What did you say?” Hal argued. “That doesn’t make sense. I didn’t.”
“Since you came, our customer complaint rate has increased by 100%,” the manager said. “I can’t believe I’m only telling you to get lost now, but we should have done it a long time ago.”
He paused, then gave a soft hum.
“I heard you used to be a pilot, and now I think I understand why they won’t let you fly anymore.”
Hal narrowed his eyes, his expression seemingly turning cold.
It seems that these words touched a nerve with him.
"What are you still standing there for?" the manager said coldly. "Are you waiting for me to escort you out?"
"In fact"
Hal clenched his fist.
"...This is a parting gift for you, you idiot."
Bang.
A right hook. The manager's mouth was twisted in pain, and he sat on the ground with a shocked expression, seemingly unable to believe his reaction.
"Wow, that's going to hurt a lot." Shen You clicked his tongue in amazement when he saw this scene from behind.
These all seem to fall under Hal's passive skill category. He fought with his teachers in school, with his superiors in the military, with his instructors at Green Lantern Training Camp, and with the Guardians after joining the Green Lantern Corps.
From childhood to adulthood, he's either fighting with his superiors or on his way to fight with them. This passive, submissive nature makes people think he has some kind of Japanese heritage.
A few minutes later, as Hal was packing up to leave, Shen You came to him.
"Who are you?" Hal frowned.
"I'm looking for Green Lantern," Shen You said. "Are you free?"
Hal raised his eyebrows.
"I do not know what you're talking about."
"Really?"
Shen You smiled and stretched out his right hand, shaking the small green light ring that should have been in Hal's pocket.
"Then what is this?"
Hal: "!?"
Chapter 191 You really have to ask?
A few minutes later, at Hal's apartment.
"Sorry, it's a bit messy," Hal said as he entered. "I haven't been back on Earth long, so I haven't had time to clean up yet."
Shen You remained silent out of politeness, but thought to himself that "a bit chaotic" was a conservative estimate.
The food scraps piled up by the door gave the room a strong smell of yesterday's takeout. The worn-out sofa was covered in stains and even had cracks. Plates, clothes, books and other odds and ends were piled up in the corner, as if everything had been used and then carelessly tossed aside.
The air was thick with the scent of bachelors.
Hal seemed a little embarrassed. He coughed and put on the Green Lantern ring. With a thought, green light energy instantly conjured several cleaning robots, each holding a broom, mop, and shovel, and bearing the Green Lantern Corps' iconic ring emblem on its chest.
He waved his hand, and the green light cleaning team immediately split up and began cleaning.
Shen You glanced at the black carpet beneath their feet and chuckled, "A black carpet is a great idea; it doesn't look dirty."
The only decent thing in the whole room was this black carpet.
Upon hearing this, Hal's expression froze again.
"In fact, I remember the carpet was supposed to be blue."
Shen You: "."
The two remained awkwardly silent for a few seconds, then tacitly decided to skip the topic and not bring it up again.
Coffee? Beer?
Hal asked as he sat down on the sofa, while simultaneously waving the lamp ring casually.
Two hands materialized out of thin air in front of the refrigerator, opened the refrigerator door, and took out a can of beer and a box of coffee beans.
"No need," Shen You said, glancing at the cleaning machines that were busy at work and the two hands that had closed the refrigerator and started making coffee for Hal. He thought to himself that the green light ring was actually quite convenient.
"By the way, how did you find me?" Hal looked at Shen You strangely. "How did you know I was Green Lantern? I was wearing a mask."
“No offense intended. But your 'mask' only covers your cheekbones.” Shen You laughed.
In a Green Lantern movie that Warner Bros. itself is reluctant to mention, the female lead Carol Danvers complains to Hal, "I've seen you naked, do you think I wouldn't recognize you if you covered your cheekbones?"
However, Hal isn't exactly one of those superheroes who cares much about keeping their identity secret. He's the type who'd rather disguise himself than risk it; in his mind, there's no problem that can't be solved with a fist. And if there is, he'll just get an even bigger fist.
“Okay, let’s get back to the point. I’ve been catching up on a lot of things that happened while I was away from Earth,” Hal said. “So, while I was away, Earth gained a Superman, and... Ultraman, that’s you, right?”
It's strange, why isn't your race listed in the Guardians' database?
“The Guardians don’t have any machine hunters in their database yet,” Shen You said. “And this is definitely not the only thing they’re hiding.”
“Yes, I’ve started to have my doubts.” Hal stroked his chin. “I asked about the machine hunters, but the Guardian scolded me on the spot and told me to stay away from the case.”
Then I told them, quite naturally, that was impossible. These machines were in my sector, on my planet. I'd always thought those little blue gnomes were unreliable. But surprisingly, no one in the Green Lantern Corps seemed surprised; everyone took obeying their orders for granted.
The Guardians don't tell us many things, and they don't ask. When I tried to ask questions, they threatened to take away my ring and dismiss me from my post.
“Green Lanterns are all soldiers; obedience is their duty. Of course, they never ask.” Shen You shrugged.
While the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps are indeed fundamentally responsible for maintaining cosmic peace and upholding justice, that is the justice the Guardians desire. Ultimately, Green Lanterns are simply working for the Guardians.
"But my light ring found some kind of unique signal used by the machine hunters, which I suspect might be used internally for communication."
Hal crossed his legs and drank the coffee that Deng Jie had just made for him.
"When I returned, I had already had the light ring simulate that signal and project it outwards. Now, there's a possibility of a response every second."
"Signal response." The light ring flashed.
"Ha, what did I tell you?" Hal's eyes lit up. "Lamp Ring, mark the coordinates for me."
The green light ring quickly displayed the exact location as instructed. Not far away, near low Earth orbit, someone responded to his call with the same signal.
"Very well, if the Guardian won't tell, then I'll investigate myself. I'll see what's behind this machine hunter's scheme."
As he spoke, a flash of light enveloped him, the glow of the lamp ring covering his entire body and transforming into the classic Green Lantern uniform that wrapped around him.
At the same time, Shen You's bracelet was activated. The armor that appeared out of thin air quickly assembled and covered his entire body.
Hal chuckled: "Cool."
Ten minutes later, the two flew out of the atmosphere and arrived at the location indicated by the coordinates.
A spaceship.
The silver spaceship, with its streamlined design, was identified by scanning results as a reconnaissance vessel bearing traces of Oa technology.
Hal unleashed cutting energy from his light ring, like a green laser scalpel slicing a circular gash across the scout ship's exterior. The two flew in one after the other.
The atmosphere was eerie, devoid of any light source. A green glow from the light ring shone through the cut, barely illuminating a small area near the entrance.
There was no sign of life, no air; it was like a long-lost haunted house. Mirror-like objects hung on the walls, but they were broken. The green light from the lamps reflected off countless mirrored surfaces, and the shadows cast by the cracks were chilling.
"No signs of life," the green light ring reported.
"Then continue scanning."
Before Hal could finish speaking, Shen You suddenly reached out and grabbed his arm, pulling him back sharply.
Almost simultaneously, a red-hot beam of light shot out from the darkness, nearly grazing Hal's protective force field.
The spaceship's walls were pierced by the beam, and green energy fragments scattered in all directions from where the force field was hit. A searing pain coursed through his body, and Hal staggered, gritting his teeth as he looked towards the attacker's location.
Then a pair of eerie red lights appeared.
Its dark red, curved body was smooth and exuded an otherworldly technological feel. Its limbs, with their silver shells, were sturdy and precisely designed. Its eyes flashed with a demonic red light, and its human-like features were mechanical and cold, devoid of any emotional fluctuation.
Machine Hunter.
"Is this all you've got?" Hal's entire body glowed green. "That's it? Is this all a machine hunter can do?"
However, the words just fell.
More and more red lights appeared in the darkness, surrounding the two from all directions.
Shen You glanced at Hal sideways: "You really have to ask?"
Chapter 192 The Smile Gradually Disappears
A blazing beam of light traversed space, and the shockwave exploded into transparent ripples on Green Lantern's protective force field. Fragments of the force field barrier flew like crystals, and Hal swerved backward, crashing headfirst into a pile of rubble.
"No one can escape the machine hunter."
The machine hunter who had blasted him away slowly approached, his eyes flashing red light.
"Alright, alright, I can recite it from memory."
Hal spat out a mouthful of blood, raised his fist, and shouted amidst a surge of green light, "No one can escape Green Lantern!"
The moment the words left his lips, the ship exploded. A blinding green light ripped through the ceiling, and the green particles transformed into a gigantic road roller that descended from the sky. This colossal steel behemoth, constructed of green light, was covered with enormous tires arranged longitudinally, making it appear exceptionally massive. The rollers spun relentlessly, as if determined to flatten everything beneath them.
It's eating my road roller!
Caught completely off guard, the machine hunter looked up only to be met with a devastating blow from the road roller. He was blasted through the ground along with the roller and plummeted to a depth where he disappeared from sight.
