Cyberpunk 2077 World Timeline Summary (Arasaka's Rise to Fame)
Cyberpunk 2077 timeline.
To make it easier for everyone to understand, let me break it down.
The timeline of major events before and after World War II is basically consistent with reality (purely fictional, do not relate to reality, this is the timeline of the cyberpunk world - this is very important! This is the original work! The original work! The original work!).
Considering that the protagonist is an Arasaka corporate employee, we will take the birth, formal establishment, and prosperity of the Arasaka family and the Arasaka Group as the reference point (cough cough, the Arasaka corporate employee onboarding exam must-know mini-class is in session).
1859:
Sasai Arasaka, the father of Saburo Arasaka, was born in Tokyo.
1916:
Sansai Arasaka founded what would later become a world-class monopolistic super-corporation—
Arasaka Corporation. It was initially established in Tokyo as a manufacturing company and gradually gained a foothold.
1919:
Son of Arakasa Sansai, the future Emperor Arakasa, the retired emperor of Night City, hated, despised, scorned, and feared by countless cyberpunk legends—
Saburo Arasaka was born at the Arasaka family manor in Tokyo.
1939:
World War II broke out.
The Arasaka Company made full use of the war and became involved in a large number of heavy industry-related matters, manufacturing ships and aircraft for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Saburo Arasaka himself joined the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II and rose through the ranks as a fighter pilot to lieutenant.
1942:
Saburo Arasaka, who had joined the Imperial Japanese Navy, was seriously wounded and eventually transferred out of the military, retiring and returning to Tokyo. He then devoted himself to studying economics, politics, and history, distancing himself from the war.
1945:
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki led to the unconditional surrender of the old Japanese Empire. The Arasaka Company suffered a decline due to post-war sanctions imposed by the Allied occupation forces and the devastation of war; its manufacturing sector, upon which it relied for survival, faltered, and the entire company was on the verge of collapse.
1945-1960:
The Arasaka Company was on the verge of bankruptcy, but fortunately, the founder, Sansai Arasaka, had foresight and business acumen, and was not a blockhead like those born in the Showa era.
Sansai Arasaka foresaw Japan's defeat in World War II and secretly transferred his assets abroad, successfully preserving his family fortune after the defeat of old Japan.
Faced with various restrictive policies from the occupying forces after the war, the company used a variety of skillful means, along with large amounts of bribery and flattery, to help it overcome the most serious post-war liquidation crisis.
After a brief period of keeping a low profile, a turning point soon arrived. Taking advantage of the subsequent conflict and tensions on the Korean Peninsula, Arasaka Sansai, who already possessed a certain amount of assets, successfully secured a large number of orders for the company.
Although it could not compare to the scale and profits of manufacturing ships and aircraft for the navy during World War II, Arasaka managed to survive thanks to a steady stream of orders from the front lines and successfully weathered the storms of the post-war period.
1960s-1980s:
In 1960, Sansai Arasaka passed away, and Saburo Arasaka officially took over the company. By this time, the Cold War had arrived, and the window for Japan's postwar economic boom had opened—the United States lifted a series of restrictions on Japan, including industrial embargoes.
As a result, Saburo Arasaka initiated a series of far-reaching reforms. Not content with producing basic light industrial products for the United States and NATO allies, Saburo Arasaka shifted the focus of the company's manufacturing division back to heavy industry and expanded the company's business scope to high-quality security services and banking business.
During this period, although Arasaka Corporation started on a relatively small scale, it steadily improved. For example, it rapidly established supply chains for light weapons, computers, armor, and small vehicles, and began to build its own army. It became a dynamic company with tangible assets around the world, and its business scope expanded rapidly, making it more powerful.
In 1980, Takashi Arasaka, the third head of the Arasaka family, was born at the Arasaka family estate in Tokyo. By the 1980s, the Arasaka Group had transformed from a family business on the verge of bankruptcy into one of the world's leading companies.
By the late 1980s, the Cold War confrontation had reached its peak.
Japan re-emerged thanks to the benefits of the Cold War, but still remained subservient to the United States. Meanwhile, the two superpowers that were fiercely confronting each other were already in decline. This was the last golden age, but also an era when human civilization was on the verge of destruction. Both sides were exhausted and used all means to try to defeat each other before they collapsed.
Johnny Silverhand was born on November 16, 1988.
1989:
Just as the Soviet Union was in turmoil, its army was declining and nuclear weapons were flowing into the black market, and the United States was on the verge of victory, the equally frail US federal government gradually became incompetent, becoming a puppet in managing the country, and the power of the security agencies was completely out of control.
The "Gang of Four," comprised of the NSA (National Security Agency), DEA (Denis Agency for Drug Enforcement), FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), and CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), holds real power in the United States.
The 1990s (a branch from major real-world events): The Dawn of a Dark Future
The world's two poles are declining simultaneously, disputes between countries are constant, the Western world is weakening, societies are disintegrating, and many national systems are dissolving.
1990–1994: The First Central American War broke out.
The United States invaded Central America under the pretext of countering the Iron Curtain, drugs, and national defense, which led Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador to form an alliance of independent nations to fight against the invasion of American imperialism.
This war resulted in many soldiers losing their limbs, and biotechnology began to flourish.
1992–1996: The Quiet War broke out.
The cause was the United States' refusal to join the European Economic Community (EEC), formed by Denmark, Sweden, Austria, and Germany, and its unwillingness to establish a Eurodollar. In response, the EEC began providing aid to countries economically embargoed by the United States, resulting in the Soviet regime maintaining friendly relations with Western Europe before its collapse.
In retaliation, the "Big Four" manipulated European and Asian stocks by hacking into computer systems. The EEC discovered this and leaked it to the media, leading many countries to refuse to do business with the United States. This made the EU the world's leading economic system (which is why the Euro is used in 2077).
1991:
Biotechnica has developed CHOOH2, a new automotive fuel that can replace petroleum and diesel.
The construction plan for the famous metropolis "Night City" is beginning to take shape;
Artificial muscles have been invented. Cyberpunk technology has officially begun.
1993:
Colombian drug cartels retaliated by detonating a portable nuclear bomb in Manhattan, New York. 15000 people died, and the Colombian drug lords, considered the ringleaders, were targeted by the U.S. military.
As the global economy worsened and the situation became increasingly volatile, many company and farm employees were laid off. These laid-off workers, known as "Nomads," drove around the country looking for odd jobs, or banded together by geographical or kinship ties to form mercenary groups and gangs.
1994:
Anticipating the collapse of the American economic system, the Arasaka Group turned its attention to general manufacturing, merging numerous small companies at low cost and acquiring their surplus raw materials. These previously unsuccessful businesses were turned around by Arasaka, bringing the company incredible profits.
The Arasaka Group continues to expand its business scope, with its manufacturing division now encompassing all kinds of products that people can access, from aircraft and medical equipment to children's toys.
In California, an ambitious entrepreneur named Richard Night began his perfect city vision—Coronado City—in Morro Bay, a neglected town near the border of Southern and Northern California, which he bought.
Later, the city gradually came to be known as the City of Night.
1995:
Saburo Arasaka's third wife, Michiko Arasaka, gave birth to Yorinobu Arasaka.
1996:
The outbreak of the First Central American War and the Quiet War, the drain on national strength by the Cold War confrontation, the collapse of the US economy, and the prelude to the chaos of national division and collapse led to the occurrence of "The Collapse".
Seeing an opportunity to break free from constraints, the Arasaka Group seized this rare chance.
Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, which renounces war, refuses to maintain military power, and does not grant the right to wage war, was repealed by politicians supported by the Arasaka Group. Japan regained the right to wage war, and the US military was forced to withdraw its troops from Japan and South Korea.
Through bribery, terrorist threats, and economic control, the Arasaka Group gradually began to influence and control the Japanese Diet and government. After turning the Diet and the Emperor into rubber stamps, Saburo Arasaka held almost all the power in the country, becoming the uncrowned king of Japan, and then spreading his influence to the world.
From then on, the Arasaka Group transcended the forms of monopolistic organizations such as 'cartels,' 'syndicates,' 'trusts,' and 'concerns,' and the company was formed into a super monopolistic giant with state ownership.
1997:
The "Big Four" in the United States are under formal investigation;
A massive scandal erupted in Japanese politics, with 60% of politicians arrested and imprisoned, and Arasaka's control over Japan deepened.
1998:
Richard Knight, the founder of Night City, was murdered by the Mafia, and Night City was officially completed shortly thereafter;
A magnitude 10.5 earthquake struck Los Angeles, submerging 35% of the city and nearly destroying it, resulting in the immediate loss of more than 65000 lives.
SovOil, a Russian oil industry company, was established.
1999:
Saburo Arasaka's daughter, Hanako Arasaka, was born in Tokyo;
Michiko Arasaka tragically passed away due to complications during childbirth after giving birth to Hanako Arasaka.
In the same year, martial law was lifted in the United States, but it was replaced by the enactment of the "Federal Arms Regulations," a law designed to counterbalance the "Big Four" without the assistance of the U.S. military.
The content states that if the owner's gun appears at a crime scene, regardless of whether the trigger was pulled by the owner or someone else, the owner will be held accountable unless the gun was reported missing immediately.
Texas threatened to secede from the United States in order to enact an additional "Roosevelt Act," which stipulated that Texas could disregard the Federal Arms Act if its interests were hindered. Ultimately, this led to Texas, California, Alaska, Nevada, and Utah entering a semi-independent state and uniting as the "Free States," while the remaining areas were referred to as the "New America."
