The car plunged into a thick fog.
A faint voice came from behind me in the distance—as if it came from a dream.
It was a woman's voice, filled with tenderness and sorrow:
"Su Ting, which version of me are you hearing now?"
Su Ting shuddered; the driver's voice seemed to come from the depths of time.
"What did you say?"
"I said... which 'me' are you hearing now?" The woman's voice rang out again, her tone gentle, yet like a steel needle piercing straight into his brain.
The sports car suddenly swerved, and Su Ting was almost thrown off, but he still held tightly to the edge of the seat, forcing himself to stay calm.
"What have you done to her? Where is Yiren? Su Ting, Chen Xi, Chu Mo—where did they all go?!" he asked through gritted teeth.
"Don't rush," the driver said with a calm smile. "Didn't you agree to fulfill your vow? This... is just the beginning."
"Are you a Dream Guardian or a Judge?" Su Ting's voice was deep. "Or... were you always part of us?"
The driver didn't answer, but instead hummed a tune softly.
The melody is slow and ethereal, like a lullaby hummed by your mother during your childhood nap, or the gentlest sigh before a nightmare.
Su Ting abruptly closed his eyes.
“You are…the storyteller,” he whispered. “You have always been recording us, guiding us.”
“Not entirely,” the driver shrugged. “Sometimes I’m just a passerby, sometimes… I’m the only memory you have left. But you know what’s the most ironic thing?”
Su Ting stared at the pair of eyes in the rearview mirror; they were eyes that did not belong to any time or space.
"what?"
"Do you remember her?" the driver suddenly lowered his voice. "Do you remember the first time you saw her? Her smile was like the morning light, like the stars, like a spring that never grows old."
Chapter 1147 The Real Punishment
Su Ting's pupils suddenly contracted.
That girl.
Of course he remembers.
"She is not a dream guardian, not a protector, she is... she is..."
But suddenly he couldn't remember her name.
It was as if all of that was just a dream that he had personally erased.
"You don't remember?" the driver chuckled. "You're all starting to forget. That's the real punishment."
"Shut up." Su Ting clenched his fist, his nails almost digging into his palm.
"You don't remember what she promised, you don't remember her saying she would let you see the sunshine of tomorrow..." The driver's voice trailed off, as if it had slipped from his ear into his heart.
Su Ting suddenly slammed his palm against the back of the seat in front of him.
"All I remember is that she chose that path where no one could turn back, all for my sake."
The driver nodded slightly: "So, are you ready to pay off this debt?"
Before he could finish speaking, a flash of light suddenly cleaved through the thick fog outside the window, and then the entire car was violently thrown into the air by an unseen force.
Su Ting's vision went black.
When he opened his eyes again, he was already sitting in front of an old wooden table covered with cracks.
Across from him, a little girl in a white dress was quietly watching him.
"You've finally arrived," she smiled. "Our time is running out."
Su Ting opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
He saw an upside-down hourglass on the table, which contained not sand, but shattered dreams and forgotten names.
"Do you remember?" The girl slowly turned the hourglass over. "I said I would take you with me... to see tomorrow's sunrise."
Su Ting's throat was dry, and he nodded.
"So what do you want to do now?"
"I want to save her."
"You want to save every single one of them."
"Correct."
The girl smiled, her eyes shining.
“But Su Ting, you must know that some things… are more painful to forget than to remember. Some people… are more cruel to wake up than to die.”
“I don’t care,” Su Ting said firmly. “She promised me that she would let me see the sunshine tomorrow.”
"Then how... do you awaken those who don't want to wake up?" The girl's voice carried a hint of pity.
Just then, a deep chime came from outside the door.
Su Ting looked up and heard someone push the door open and walk in.
That's Su Ting.
He was still wearing the same old jacket, but his eyes had become more sharp.
“I knew you’d go to her first,” Su Ting said. “But we have more important things to do.”
"Do you know who she is?" Su Ting asked.
Su Ting did not answer immediately, but slowly sat down, looked at the hourglass on the table, and sighed softly.
“I was once her guardian of dreams,” he whispered, “but I’ve forgotten her name. Just like we all have.”
“Now let’s remember this again.” Su Ting clenched his fist.
A second chime came from outside the door.
Chenxi strode in, carrying a rusty battle axe on his back.
"I just woke up and I heard you guys were planning something big?" He grinned. "That's exactly what I love."
Then, the bell rang for the third time.
A familiar yet indifferent figure stood at the doorway.
Chu Mo stood there, his eyes deep and unfathomable.
“I’ve said it before… I never believe in fate, but this time… I want to believe in you this once.”
The fragments of dreams flowed slowly in the hourglass.
Su Ting looked at the four people at the table and said in a low voice:
"She said that as long as we find our real names together, we can end this dream."
Su Ting frowned: "The problem is that we're still living in someone else's storyline."
Chapter 1148 Then we'll break it.
“Then we’ll break it.” Chenxi brandished his battle axe. “I hate having my fate decided by others.”
"Are you ready?" the girl asked Su Ting softly.
“I want to know the truth about her,” Su Ting said in a low but firm voice, “no matter the cost.”
The girl slowly got up and walked towards the door.
Five people stood by the door, behind which lay endless darkness, as if the entire world had fallen into a deep slumber.
The girl turned around gently and looked at them: "Remember, after we enter... anyone who wakes up again will no longer belong to this world."
She paused, her gaze falling on Su Ting's face, and smiled gently.
"Su Ting, which version of me are you hearing now...?"
"Who exactly are you?" Su Ting stared into her eyes, those eyes that seemed to devour memories, reflecting his shattered name.
"Me? I am the unfinished ending of your dreams," she said softly, her tone gentle yet carrying a coldness that was not of this mortal descent.
“I only remember you as the little girl beside her, and she entrusted you to me…” Su Ting murmured.
“Yes, she entrusted me to you.” She nodded, but there was no smile on her lips. “And then you forgot about me.”
“I—” Su Ting’s throat tightened, and a blurry memory suddenly flashed through his mind: blood, flames, her crying eyes, and that promise he could never remember.
"Do you know why she chose that path where there's no turning back?" the girl asked slowly.
"She did it all for all of us, so that we could wake up again..." Su Ting clenched his fist.
“But you’ve forgotten her name.” She gave a cold laugh. “Even her smile is starting to fade.”
“Then memorize it again.” Su Ting raised his head, his gaze resolute.
Su Ting coughed lightly: "The problem is, how do we remember them? Our current 'memories' are probably all plots given to us by others."
