Chapter 2 The Teachings of an Older Catgirl
Because there were too many books, Rune went directly to Mrs. Pince for help. His focus was, of course, on spells and transfiguration, and Mrs. Pince easily recited the book titles and their shelf numbers. Rune couldn't help but wonder if Mrs. Pince had memorized all the books in the library and their locations.
In the afternoon, after all classes were over, Rune hurried to the small study on the second-floor corridor. It was Professor McGonagall's office, with a roaring fireplace and a view of the Quidditch pitch from the window. Considering Professor McGonagall's hobbies, Rune figured she must have specifically fought for this spot from Dumbledore.
"You are... a rune from Slytherin?" Professor McGonagall adjusted her glasses, scrutinizing the rune carefully. "Did the Gryffindors bully you?"
"No, I have some questions about Transfiguration that I'd like to ask you." Rune pointed to his hair. "When I was previewing the Transfiguration lesson, I found that transforming my hair and a matchstick into a needle is very difficult..."
Hearing Rune's confusion, Professor McGonagall nodded with satisfaction and then carefully explained it to him. After listening, Rune nodded repeatedly.
It turns out that Transfiguration itself follows several principles, including: for objects of the same volume, it is easier to transform an inanimate object into an inanimate object than an inanimate object into a living object; in the transformation of objects of the same nature and size, objects without magic are easier to transform than objects with magic; and it is easier to reduce the same object than to increase it, etc.
The freshly plucked hair serves as a symbol of the human body, and turning it into a needle is technically a form of human transformation. Furthermore, the hair was taken from the young wizard's head, thus possessing magical power. Finally, turning a fine strand of hair into a slightly larger needle naturally increases the difficulty. These factors combined make Rune's transformation spell unlikely to succeed.
Finally, Professor McGonagall inquired about Rune's progress in Transfiguration. Rune then demonstrated his work.
"Excellent Transfiguration." Professor McGonagall moved the needle closer to her eyes, then transformed it back into a matchstick. "Did you practice Transfiguration during the holidays?"
"no."
Professor McGonagall then left Rune a paper on the varying degrees of difficulty of different types of transfiguration, and provided relevant reference books.
So, if I say I've done the prep, I don't need to write this paper? Rune sighed, then went back to the library, borrowed relevant books, and began trying to finish the paper. To be honest, it wasn't difficult, especially for someone with an adult mindset and who had been through the ordeal of university papers.
The next morning, Rune awoke from his sleep. As he prepared to pray, shocking news arrived: Mr. and Mrs. Wayne had been shot and killed. Rune's heart sank. In the New 52, Bruce Wayne lost both parents at the age of nine, left Gotham at twelve, and will return at twenty-five. Batman will be born from sixteen years of hardship, thus becoming a central figure in DC Comics.
Meanwhile, all sorts of psychologically twisted criminals will appear in Gotham, with the Joker being one of the most prominent and central figures in countless villainous alliances. He is chaos, entropy, and the other side of Batman. His jokes nearly destroyed Batman, and when he merged with Batman, he even destroyed multiple universes. Just thinking about it made Rune feel heavy-hearted.
Fortunately, he still had the system.
Time flies, and two years have passed quickly. In DC, Rune has turned thirteen, which means it's time for him to leave the monastery. At Hogwarts, however, he has become a "troublemaker."
As he wished, his grades in Charms and Transfiguration were near perfect, and Potions were also quite good, but his other courses hovered around the passing mark. Rune was not involved in the Resurrection Stone or the Chamber of Secrets incident, and because he spent so much time in the library, he had few friends. Snape observed all of this.
"A swarm of cockroaches," Snape uttered in a low voice, his face expressionless, his lips pressed tightly together beneath his hooked nose. The massive stone beast at the headmaster's office door turned, and Snape ascended the escalating spiral staircase into the office.
"I know why you've come," Dumbledore said with a smile, as if Snape's concerns were unfounded.
"I don't believe you can't see it." Snape frowned, his already gloomy face growing even darker. "That student named Dark Rune, his thirst for power is terrifying to everyone, as if Death is chasing him—no, it seems he's chasing something that shouldn't be in his age. Dumbledore, I don't believe you can't see it!"
"Especially since he's a Slytherin?" Dumbledore could even crack a joke, but he quickly added, "Don't worry, I know all that. He's a studious boy; sometimes his questions even stump McGonagall and Flitwick. It's just that he doesn't have any friends, which is definitely a bit unusual."
“Power often brings authority. He has no vassals now, but when he displays his power, people will worship him like fools, revere him, and then follow him!” Snape stared at Dumbledore, his face grim. The scene before him resembled a gloomy, middle-aged man pressuring a kind old man; in the street, someone might call the police. “He might become the next Dark Lord!”
"..." Dumbledore was silent for a moment, then said in a low voice, "They are different."
Snape snorted and strode away, his large black robe billowing in the wind behind him.
At this moment, Rune was unaware that he had instigated an argument between Snape and Dumbledore; he was simply reviewing his fifth-year Charms lessons. Compared to Transfiguration, Charms had a more relaxed approach. In the initial practice, he needed to possess full emotion, accurate pronunciation, and precise wand movements. But with practice, these three elements could become blurred. At its peak, Rune could even cast Excalibur and Armored Barrier silently and without a wand.
These two aspects are the focus of Rune's training: offense and defense. Besides the controllable power of your weapon, what's even more terrifying is the definition of "weapon" in "expels your weapon." For example, when he cast a spell on a spider, its fangs were forcibly pulled out. Extending this further, if Rune were to cast a spell on a human…
Professor Flitwick therefore imposed strict restrictions on Rune's spellcasting.
While Rune was reviewing, the Slytherins were discussing something.
"He should have been assigned to Ravenclaw!" said a tall male Slytherin student, his face full of indignation. "He might have become a Gryffindor by now. I've seen him walking out of the library with that lioness several times."
"Yes, yes, he never makes enemies of Gryffindor, and he even hangs out with Fred and George..."
After a brief argument, the Slytherins gradually calmed down, but their gazes all turned to a pureblood with a pale face, a pointed chin, light blond hair, and grey eyes. Everyone was waiting for him to make a decision.
"Then teach him a little lesson," Draco Malfoy said, suppressing his smugness, before adding, "but don't go too far."
If he were merely a half-blood with excellent grades, the Slytherins might have been able to tolerate it. But in the battle against Gryffindor, Rune never participated, acting as if he were invisible. He should have been the Slytherins' ace! This made the Slytherins even more dissatisfied. Finally, they got their chance—it was the beginning of the school year, and the house grades hadn't yet diverged significantly; even if they were caught fighting, there wouldn't be any consequences other than detention.
