Chapter 57 These fish died in vain

The trip to London was very enjoyable. Everyone experienced firsthand what a knight in a fantasy novel would do in a large knight-themed amusement park: it started with a delicious meal, followed by a summons from the king, from which they learned that the princess had been kidnapped, and then they embarked on a journey, visiting the amusement park's attractions in order, which were packaged as the hardships and dangers the knight would face in rescuing the princess.

Overall, it was actually quite fun, except for the Stargazing Pie. This dish is extremely rare; even in London, finding this legendary dish is a very difficult journey. Clark's anticipation before the meal turned into agony afterward. He had always imagined the Stargazing Pie to be a pie topped with deep purple blueberry jam and garnished with various fruits—the blueberries representing the vast, dark universe, and the fruits representing the dazzling stars. But he never expected that the Stargazing Pie would actually contain fish with their heads sticking out and looking towards the sky!

After forcing himself to eat it, Clark was somewhat surprised. He said, "Actually, it tasted pretty good, but I prefer sweeter pies."

Rune asked, "Shall we order some other authentic English dishes?"

"Never mind, I can't stand English food..." Clark pondered, trying to keep his vocabulary from being too offensive, and finally said, "Uh, can't stand the whimsical ideas in English food?" Zatanna covered her mouth and giggled beside him.

The Stargazing Pie was packed up because Jason was going to treat them to French food later, but Rune thought Jason just didn't want Clark to suffer.

"It seems the British cuisine killed these fish twice," Rune sighed. As a foodie, he could think of countless ways to cook them just by looking at the raw materials.

"Why do you say that?" Zatanna looked at Rune curiously, and even Jason looked over.

"The first time English cuisine killed these fish, the second time it even killed their flavor," Rune said. "You could say these fish died in vain."

This made everyone burst into laughter, even the pedestrians nearby couldn't help but laugh.

As someone who has lived in London for a long time, Jason was able to find French food that was both affordable and of high quality. Even Rune had to admit that this quirky restaurant called Frog's Stomach was indeed very good at cooking.

Jason took a bite of firm, smooth sea bass, glistening with sauce, and placed it on a piece of toasted bread. He chewed contentedly for a few moments, then said to Rune, "Rune, there's something I want you to be careful about. It might not seem like a big deal to a wizard of your level, but since you've made this choice, you must be cautious..."

"Uncle? What are you... cough cough, what did you say?" Clark said, swallowing the creamy mushroom stew with difficulty, but it seemed to be a bit of a struggle for him. Zatanna gently patted Clark's back and handed him a glass of water, hoping he would swallow it quickly. Clark hurriedly picked up the glass, gulped down the water, and then thanked Zatanna in a low voice.

"It's just that your nominal cousin's magic power has increased too quickly," Jason said softly. "You're not a mage, so you can't know how powerful your brother is right now, but I can describe it to you like this: in the current magical world, you can count on one hand the number of people who can rival him..."

"Huh?" Clark was dumbfounded. He looked at Rune. Clark had never thought that his cousin was so strong, but now that he knew, he felt that it was as expected. After all, someone had asked him to save the world before. If Rune wasn't strong, why would that strange person ask him for help?

"In fact, I'm pretty sure your cousin is actually the reincarnation of some powerful white wizard," Zatanna added, as she enjoyed her ribeye stew in burgundy. "And another common knowledge among wizards is that their magical power increases with age, until after adulthood, when their magical power tends to stabilize..."

Rune listened quietly, though he hadn't actually understood Jason's hint.

“But there’s a problem here.” Jason continued cutting the fish with his knife and fork. “Your cousin—this powerful white wizard—his consciousness awakened far too early. I don’t know what Rune is so anxious about, but the fact is his magic is growing at an extraordinary rate…”

Clark countered, "Isn't this a good thing?"

"That's certainly a good thing, but remember what I said before? The magic that increases with age isn't a smooth curve; it increases around your birthday," Zatanna added. "Both are good things, but combining them isn't necessarily the best."

Clark frowned slightly, a hint of worry flashing in his eyes, and his lips drooped slightly. He looked at Rune, then at Zatanna: "What on earth is going to happen?" He knew why Rune was in such a hurry. Back when someone was hunting him down in Gotham, Rune probably had no choice but to use some means to accelerate the growth of his magic power.

Jason quickly reassured Clark, "It's not a huge problem, but it's not insignificant either. As a reincarnated great white wizard, Rune must have a way to solve this, right...?"

Turning his head to look at Rune, Jason saw the embarrassed expression on Rune's face, and his expression changed drastically: "You don't actually have any ideas, do you?"

"Maybe...no?" Rune smiled, hoping to ease the tension, but no one had any intention of laughing along, and the atmosphere immediately became quite serious.

Clark grasped Rune's hands, and even though he knew Rune might be an ancient being who had lived for hundreds of years, he still looked at Rune with a serious expression and said, word by word, "I will definitely help you, and I will never let you see hell again..."

Rune's mind was in turmoil. He didn't know how to respond to Clark's feelings, so he could only sigh softly, a warm yet complicated expression on his face.

"Um..." Zatanna nudged the determined Clark beside her: "Are you sure you're not mistaken? The danger isn't the runes, it's you guys."

Jason nodded. "Rune has already learned magic. He knows the theory of magic and can unleash an excessive amount of magic on his own. So I estimate that he'll only unconsciously cast some spells around his birthday, but things might be different when he turns eighteen..."

He ordered a bottle of sparkling water, then shook it vigorously, and the bottle unsurprisingly burst open.

"At the age of eighteen, mages' magical power grows the fastest, like bubbles in water that have just burst. Perhaps before, simply opening a crack could have prevented it from bursting, but in the situation just now..."

Clark asked anxiously, "Will Rune be in danger?"

"I already said, given his physical condition, there shouldn't be any major risks..." Jason glanced at Clark, "But it's not necessarily the case for you..."
