Chapter 63 The Origin of the Spiked Sword

As soon as Dui stepped off the carriage, an elf stepped forward to help him take care of the horse and the carriage.

He thanked him and stepped forward, greeting Gandalf with a smile.

Gandalf.

"I'm so glad to see you're alright, Duir," Gandalf said happily.

"It seems you already know Lord Elrond, so there's no need for me to introduce you further."

Elrond nodded in praise, "The wizard Duir's magical skills are extraordinary. When we were hunting Orks, he had already taken care of hundreds of Orks and dire wolves. I think it won't be long before the name of the enemy of the Orks spreads throughout the Eriador Wastes."

"Lord Elrond, you flatter me!" Dui quickly declined. There were many people who had killed far more Orks than he had, such as the countless Ork souls under the command of this elven lord. He dared not bear the title of enemy of the Orks.

After exchanging pleasantries with Gandalf and Duy, Elrond looked at Thorin and said politely.

"Welcome, Thorin, son of Therain."

"We probably haven't met before," Thorin questioned.

"Your mannerisms are quite reminiscent of my grandfather," Elrond explained amicably. "I've known Thor since he was King of the Mountain."

"Really? He's never mentioned you once." Thorin's attitude was far from friendly, his tone sarcastic.

Gandalf rolled his eyes.

Dui was speechless. Thorin really knew how to say things that offended people, just like always.

Elrond, being quite composed, didn't take Thorin's attitude to heart and turned to Elvish, instructing, "Light the fire and prepare fine wine; we must entertain our honored guest."

"What is he saying? Is he talking badly about us?" The dwarf Groin was furious and was about to charge forward, and the other dwarves also looked ready to fight.

"No, Lord Groin, he means he's inviting you to a feast!" Gandalf explained wearily.

The dwarves were skeptical, and they huddled together whispering, discussing whether this was a trap or not.

After discussing it, Groin said it as if it were a matter of course.

"In that case, lead the way."

at the banquet,

Elrond, Gandalf, Dui, and Thorin sat at one table, while the other dwarves and Bilbo sat at another.

Dui looked at the table full of green food, without a trace of meaty smell, and then at the group of dwarves opposite him who had nowhere to eat, and felt helpless.

It seems the elves aren't without temper after all.

And so, they immediately retaliated with a small act of revenge?

But he also got dragged into it.

Apart from Thorin remaining silent, the atmosphere at Dui's table was quite pleasant.

However, when they got to Bilbo's table, it was a completely different story.

Among them, the youngest dwarf, Kili, stared intently at the elf playing the harp and even winked at her.

It turned out the other party was a male elf, which immediately made his companions burst into laughter.

The noise even attracted the attention of Elrond and others.

Halfway through the banquet, Gandalf told Elrond about his and Duy's hunt for trolls, and handed Elrond his sword, asking him where it came from.

Elrond recognized it at a glance.

"This is Gramdrin, the Hammer of the Enemy, the sword of King Turgun of Gondolin, forged in the First Age for the war against the Orcs."

"I didn't expect you to encounter it. Looks like you're lucky."

"This isn't my luck," Gandalf shook his head, explaining with a bright smile, "it's a gift, something Duir found and gave to me."

Upon hearing this, Elrond looked at Dui with surprise, his gaze becoming even more amiable, and nodded: "This is a precious friendship."

Dui felt a little embarrassed by what the two said and could only turn his attention to other things.

Elrond then appraised Thorin's Beastbite Sword and wished him good fortune in using it.

Seeing this, Bilbo below hesitated and picked up his short sword.

Seeing this, the dwarf Balin immediately retorted, "Don't even think about it. Swords and blades are only named after their glorious achievements in battle. If you ask me, what you have is probably not even a sword. At most, it's just a letter opener."

Hearing this, Bilbo put away his short sword with a hint of disappointment.

However, Dui happened to witness this scene and immediately said, "Bilbo, bring me your elven sword. Lord Elrond might know its origin."

"This...this isn't necessary, is it?" Bilbo hesitated, as he lacked confidence in the short sword.

After all, compared to the exquisitely forged and gem-encrusted swords of the Enemy-Slaying Sword and the Beast-Biting Sword, the short sword appears very inconspicuous and has no decorations.

However, Elrond was also drawn to Dui's words and looked at Bilbo.

"Since you also have an elven sword, may I take a look at it?"

Under the watchful eyes of the crowd, Bilbo became somewhat restrained, stood up, and placed his short sword in front of Elrond.

Elrond saw that it was a short sword, and curiously drew it from its leather sheath. He examined it closely and then showed surprise.

Seeing this, everyone became curious. Could this short sword really have some kind of origin?

"Lord Elrond, do you know the origin of this sword?" Gandalf asked.

Elrond nodded, his expression complex.

"This sword, or rather this dagger, is indeed of extraordinary origin, for it once belonged to the Golden Flower Lord of Gondolin—Glorfindel."

"You mean this dagger, the one that killed Balrog?" Gandalf was also very surprised to hear this.

Elrond nodded, and then told everyone about the origin of the dagger.

Glorfindel was a Noldor Elven nobleman and lord of House Goldenflower, one of the twelve houses of Gondolin. In the year 510 of the First Age, Gondolin was attacked by Morgoth, who laid a trap and sent a large army consisting of dragons, balrogs, wolves, and orcs.

After Gondolin fell, only a very small number of residents escaped. They passed through a place called Eagle Rift, where they were ambushed and intercepted by orcs and Balrogs.

Glorfindel fought the Balrog alone, allowing the others to escape. He fought the Balrog, but was pulled off a cliff by its fiery whip. During the fall, he plunged a dagger into the Balrog's abdomen, killing it, before dying on the cliff.

Bilbo's short sword was the same dagger that Glorfindel used to kill Balrog.

Everyone was very surprised to receive this news, and their gazes toward the short sword in Bilbo's hand changed.

Dui was also very surprised at this moment. He did not expect that Bilbo's thorn sword had such an extraordinary origin.

What's even more interesting is that Glorfindel, the former owner of this dagger, now lives in the Valley and is one of the most powerful elves there.

Yes, Glofendel is not dead.

Or rather, he was reborn.

After Glorfindel killed the Balrog, he himself perished, but he received divine favor and was reborn soon after. He was then sent to Middle-earth, along with five other wizards, to assist the Noldor High King Gil-galad and Elrond in their fight against Sauron's growing power.

So now something interesting has happened.

Both the former and current owners of this dagger are in the Valley. Should it be returned to its original owner, Glorfindel, or should it remain with its current owner, Bilbo?

Even Elrond was somewhat troubled by this, and ultimately decided to seek Grofindel's opinion.
