Chapter 119 Night Raid on San Francisco
After exchanging pleasantries, Qin Jin's gaze quickly locked onto his target—
An elderly man with a refined demeanor and wearing gold-rimmed glasses was talking to several people. His speech and manners exuded the air of a scholar. He was none other than Dr. Douglas Campbell.
Qin Jin gestured to Morton and then walked over with Alessa.
"Dr. Campbell?" Qin Jin asked politely during a break in the conversation.
The old man turned around, his gaze gentle and wise: "I am. And you are...?"
"Qin Jin, Detective Inspector of the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Operations Unit. This is my sister, Alessa," Qin Jin introduced.
"Oh, Detective Qin, I've heard so much about you. Morton mentioned you to me, saying you saved his son's life."
Dr. Campbell kindly extended his hand to shake Qin Jin's, then his gaze fell on Alessa, observing her with a professional and gentle expression. "Hello, Alessa."
Aresa remained silent, her grey-blue eyes calmly watching him.
Qin Jin got straight to the point, lowering his voice slightly:
"Dr. Campbell, excuse me for bothering you. About my sister... she has an extremely rare growth disorder. We've seen many doctors, but we've never been able to diagnose it. Her biological age seems to have... stalled."
Dr. Campbell's gaze instantly sharpened, filled with the inquisitiveness of a scholar: "Stagnation? What are the specific manifestations?"
"Simply put, it means they never grow up," Qin Jin carefully chose his words.
"She looks like she's 9 years old, but she's actually 15. We've done a lot of tests, and the results are all normal... I'd like to ask you for your help."
Dr. Campbell frowned slightly, clearly intrigued by this rare case.
"This is indeed...very unusual, but there are similar records in history, though few, but I think we should be able to find cases..."
Qin Jin raised an eyebrow. "Hmm, that's good news. If there have been similar cases before, things will be much simpler."
Dr. Campbell thought for a moment, then spoke earnestly:
"Okay, Detective Qin, this is my phone number. I'm going to New York for a meeting tomorrow, and then I fly to Washington... I should be able to find some time in about two weeks to give your sister a full checkup. What do you think?"
Qin Jin nodded, a smile appearing on his face:
"Thank you, Dr. Campbell, no problem at all. Here's my phone number."
"Okay, it's settled then." Dr. Campbell nodded with a smile. "I'll have my assistant contact you later."
Qin Jin watched as Dr. Campbell was called away by others. It seemed that everything was going more smoothly than he had imagined, and it was time to leave.
Qin Jin approached Chief Morton and used the case as an excuse to take his leave. Chief Morton probably guessed that he disliked socializing and did not try to stop him. Instead, he had his personal assistant see Qin Jin out.
The following period was calm and uneventful.
With her impeccable affability, insightful understanding of people's hearts, and captivating beauty, Qingyin quickly established herself in the Canyon branch and quietly integrated into the organization.
Catherine has officially begun her exorcism studies, and she is rarely seen in the office.
Constantine remained elusive, appearing only briefly each day before vanishing again, always reeking of alcohol mixed with his usual cigarette smoke.
Qin Jin did the same. He would wander around the police station a couple of times each day before leaving with Alessa. They traveled all over Los Angeles to farms, and in addition to Lao Zhou's fresh chicken blood, they opened up two other blood collection points: deer blood and sheep blood.
A few days later, one afternoon, Qin Jin received a call from Johnny:
"explain."
"Boss! I found out!" Johnny's voice was low. "That old bastard from the Tong family, Tong Kaihu, is hiding in the Martial Arts Hall in Chinatown as a temple keeper!"
"A temple dedicated to Guan Yu?"
"Yes! The front is dedicated to Guan Yu, and the back is the Tong family's ancestral hall! It's their private property!" Johnny spoke very quickly.
"I checked with Tong Zhenhai. Important things are either kept at home or in the bank. I don't think I've heard of any important antiques. On the contrary, Tong Kaihu is keeping the old things of Wushengtang, such as dragon-headed knives, command flags, and seals. He said there are two rooms behind the ancestral hall, and they are full of these things."
Are you sure?
"Boss, this is the only place!" Johnny emphasized, "I think it should be, mainly because... Tong Zhenhai has nowhere to store it, unless he puts it in a bank safe deposit box."
The chances of it being put in a bank are too slim. Its cultural relic value is actually not high; Qin and Jin only need it because of the information recorded inside.
He basically approved of Johnny's investigation and decisively gave the following instructions:
"Then you can come back now. Be careful not to wet the bed before dawn."
"Understood!" Johnny felt as if he had been granted a pardon.
After hanging up the phone, Qin Jin didn't hesitate at all. He sent a message in the group chat for Group Two, asking Constantin and Catherine to meet at 6 o'clock after they finished their business to discuss some matters.
The three of them arrived on time as expected.
"I need to talk to you about something," Qin Jin said, standing in the center of the office.
"I have some personal business to attend to in San Francisco, which should take no more than a week. During that time... Jack, you stay back and keep an eye on things. Don't wander off, or we might not be able to find you later. Catherine, you should also be prepared. If there are any cases, accompany her. As for Muse, you don't have any plans for the time being."
"Received." Catherine nodded.
"Got it." Constantine shrugged indifferently.
"Boss, going to San Francisco?" Qingyin blinked, her face showing curiosity and just the right amount of enthusiasm. "Just you? Taking Alessa with you? Or... should I come with you? I don't have any urgent cases these days, I can lend you a hand, run errands or something?"
Qin Jin glanced at Qingyin. She offered to help simply to strengthen their connection and lay a solid foundation for future troubles, so that Qin Jin wouldn't be unwilling to help.
Although Qin Jin tried his best to keep a low profile and avoid standing out, now that Qing Yin has already infiltrated the group, do you think he can escape trouble when it comes?
Since that's the case, let's use them as thugs! Might as well use them.
"Boss, take me to see some sights, okay? I promise I won't cause any trouble!" Qingyin added, her smile a little playful.
Qin Jin nodded directly:
"Alright. Muse, come with me." He turned to Catherine and Constantine. "That's it."
Catherine and Constantine had no objection to the arrangement.
Catherine only gave one piece of advice: "Be careful."
"Mm," Qin Jin replied.
The group walked out of the police station building and arrived at Qin Jin's Dodge in the parking lot. Just as Qin Jin took out his keys, Qing Yin quickly took a few steps and pressed the key of a huge black SUV next to them.
The car lights flashed, and a deep unlocking sound rang out.
It was a lightly modified Chevrolet Suburban, with its square and rugged lines, tall body, and dark-tinted bulletproof glass, exuding a calm yet powerful aura.
"Shall we drive my car?" Qingyin opened the driver's side door. Since Constanze and Catherine weren't here, she stopped pretending.
"If your car has been there before, then I'll take mine. It's bigger and safer."
Qin Jin didn't say much and got into the passenger seat. Alessa climbed into the back seat, and then Yuanxiao, who was wiggling her butt, came in.
Qingyin got into the driver's seat, started the engine, and the deep roar of the V8 engine echoed in the parking lot.
The black, behemoth-like Chevrolet drove out of the police station, merged into the evening traffic of Los Angeles, and sped off towards San Francisco with a clear direction.
Qin Jin took out his phone and called Frank without informing him first, reporting his whereabouts. The reason was as simple as ever...
Go investigate the case.
