Chapter 187 Tracking the Mercedes
Chapter 187 Tracking the Mercedes
Lynn nodded; he knew Hans's assessment was sound. But it also meant they might once again face those elusive mutants. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself: "We must find evidence as soon as possible to prove it was the work of mutants. At the same time, we must increase patrols to prevent similar incidents from happening again."
Hans nodded in agreement, and the two began to work together, carefully searching every corner of the villa.
However, despite searching the entire villa, they found no valuable clues. This greatly frustrated Lynn, who knew that without solid evidence, it would be difficult to bring the murderer to justice.
As night fell and the streetlights cast a dim glow, Lynn and Hans, dressed in dark casual clothes, silently approached the luxurious suburban villa. Their steps were light yet firm, their eyes revealing the keenness and decisiveness characteristic of detectives.
"Lynn, are you sure there are clues here?" Hans asked in a low voice, his fingers lightly rubbing the detective equipment at his waist, his reliable assistant in solving cases for many years.
Lynn didn't answer immediately. Instead, she looked up at the villa's high walls and tightly closed gates, a determined glint in her eyes. "The security system here is so tight. If there wasn't a mole, how could those jewels have disappeared so silently?"
Hans nodded. He knew that Lynn's reasoning was always accurate, which was the key to their years of working together and solving many strange cases.
The two bypassed the main gate and arrived at a grove of trees on the side of the villa. Lynn took out a small device and carefully scanned the surrounding wireless signals. "It seems their security system does have a vulnerability." A smile appeared on Lynn's lips as the device in his hand emitted a faint beeping sound, indicating a hidden entrance.
Hans followed Lynn through the woods to a hidden side door. Lynn deftly picked the lock, and the two quickly entered the villa.
The villa's interior was luxuriously decorated, yet it exuded a sense of desolation. Lynn and Hans had a clear division of labor: one was responsible for checking the surveillance system, while the other began searching for possible clues.
"Hans, look here!" Lynn suddenly called out softly. He was standing by a window and pointed to a tiny scratch on the window frame.
Hans quickly moved closer and saw that there was indeed a barely noticeable fingerprint where Lynn was pointing. "This is—" A hint of surprise flashed in Hans's eyes.
"That's right, these are the fingerprints of habitual offender Roger," Lynn said confidently. He took out a small fingerprint scanner from his pocket and compared the fingerprints on the window frame with the pre-stored data.
Roger was a name that held considerable weight in both of their minds. He was an extremely cunning thief who had escaped police pursuit multiple times, leaving behind very few clues.
"How did he end up here?" Hans asked, frowning.
"This just proves that we're on the right track." A hint of excitement flashed in Lynn's eyes. "Roger wouldn't be here for no reason; he must be involved in this jewelry theft."
Hans nodded and began carefully examining the marks around the window, trying to find Roger's route in and out. Lynn, meanwhile, took out his phone and contacted the police for backup.
Just then, a series of hurried footsteps sounded outside the villa. The two men exchanged a glance and immediately realized that Roger was probably returning.
"Quick, we need to find a place to hide," Lynn whispered. He quickly scanned the surroundings, then pointed to a concealed closet. "There!"
The two quickly hid in the closet and closed the door tightly. Through the gap in the closet, they could see what was happening outside.
A moment later, the villa's door was roughly pushed open, and a figure hurried in. The man was tall, wearing a black trench coat with the brim of his hat pulled low, obscuring his face. But from the familiar figure and movements, Lynn and Hans recognized him as Roger.
Roger seemed flustered, constantly looking back as if to check if anyone was following him. Then, he went straight to the window with the fingerprints and began trying to open it.
"He's trying to run away!" Hans whispered.
Lynn didn't speak; he stared intently at Roger's movements. After trying several times, Roger seemed to realize the window was locked, and he began anxiously looking around.
Just then, Lynn suddenly pushed open the closet door and rushed out. "Roger, don't move!" he shouted.
Roger was startled by the sudden sound. He turned around abruptly and met Lynn's gaze. For a moment, a flicker of panic crossed his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Roger asked, trying to sound calm.
"We're detectives investigating a jewelry theft," Lynn said coldly. "And you, Roger, are our prime suspect."
Roger's expression changed slightly upon hearing this, but he still tried to remain calm. "What evidence do you have?"
"He asked provocatively.
"The fingerprints on the window frame are evidence." Hans came out of the closet, holding a fingerprint comparison device. "Your fingerprints match the fingerprints left at the scene perfectly."
Roger glanced at the fingerprints on the window frame, a flicker of panic crossing his eyes. He knew he was truly doomed this time.
However, Roger was not one to give up easily. He took a deep breath and then suddenly charged at Lynn and Hans. "Since you want to capture me, then come at me!" he roared, trying to break through their encirclement.
Lynn and Hans were prepared; they reacted swiftly, attacking Roger from both sides. After a fierce struggle, Roger was finally subdued by the two.
"You think you can catch me like this?" Roger said, lying on the ground, panting heavily. "Let me tell you, you're too young."
"Youth doesn't equate to ignorance." Lynn looked coldly at Roger. "We know your methods perfectly well. Now, just wait for the law to punish you."
After saying that, Lynn took out his phone and dialed the police. Soon after, police lights flashed and sirens wailed.
Roger was taken away by the police. Lynn and Hans stood in front of the villa, watching the police car drive away, with victorious smiles on their faces.
The interrogation room was dimly lit and heavy with tension. Lynn sat at a metal table, his eyes sharp as knives, staring directly at Roger across from him. Roger slumped in a chair, his face pale, but a stubborn glint flashed in his eyes.
"Roger, you now face charges of murder and theft," Lynn said calmly but firmly. "We have sufficient evidence to convict you."
Roger's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Conviction? Evidence? Your so-called evidence is just those fingerprints and surveillance footage?" He shook his head. "That only proves I stole something, not that I killed someone."
Lynn frowned slightly and took out a report. "We found your DNA at the scene. How do you explain that?"
Roger's smile vanished. He stared wide-eyed at the report, as if he couldn't believe his eyes. "This is impossible!" he roared. "When I got there, that family of three was already dead! I only stole a few things; I didn't kill anyone!"
"Then why were you there? Why did you choose that time?" Lynn pressed on relentlessly.
Roger was silent for a moment, seemingly gathering his thoughts. "I—I received an anonymous text message telling me there were valuables to steal. When I got there, the house was empty, only the jewelry remained." He looked up at Lynn. "I really didn't kill anyone, you have to believe me."
Lynn didn't speak. He gave Roger a deep look, then stood up. "I'll find out," he said. "If what you're saying is true, I'll find evidence to prove your innocence. But if you're lying—"
Roger interrupted Lynn: "I'm not lying! Everything I said is true!" His voice was full of determination and urgency.
Lynn nodded and turned to leave the interrogation room. He knew this case was far more complex than he had imagined. While Roger's testimony contained some truth, it still needed further verification.
A few days later, Lynn returned to the interrogation room. This time, he brought a new report and a surveillance video.
"Roger, we investigated the anonymous text messages you mentioned." Lynn handed the report to Roger. "The phone that sent the messages was a disposable phone; it was used and then thrown away, making it impossible to trace the sender."
Roger looked at the report, a hint of disappointment on his face. He had thought this lead would clear his name, but now it seemed his hopes were dashed.
However, Lynn's next words rekindled his hope. "But we found this."
Lynn played the surveillance video.
In the video, a blurry figure enters the house before the incident. Although the face is not clearly visible, the build and movements suggest it is not Roger.
"Who is this person?" Roger asked in surprise.
“We’re still investigating,” Lynn said. “But this video at least proves you weren’t the only one who went into the scene. Maybe he’s the real killer.”
Roger let out a long sigh of relief, feeling a weight lift from his shoulders. "Thank you," he said sincerely. "I know I've done many wrong things before, but this time I really didn't kill anyone."
I hope you can find the real killer as soon as possible.
Lynn nodded. "We'll do our best," he said. "But you can't completely clear your name. You'll need to stay here until we find solid evidence."
Roger didn't speak; he simply nodded silently. He knew that his past crimes made it difficult for the police to fully trust him. However, he also believed that as long as Lynn and his team could find the real killer, he would regain his freedom.
In the days that followed, Lynn and her colleagues launched an in-depth investigation. They tracked the movements of the blurry figure, investigated people who had been in contact with the victim's family, and even learned a detailed about Roger's past.
However, the investigation did not go smoothly. The blurry figure seemed to be a skilled killer, elusive and difficult to track. Furthermore, the victim's family had a complex web of relationships, with anyone potentially a suspect.
Just when Lynn was feeling overwhelmed, an unexpected clue led them to a breakthrough. It turned out that...
One of Roger's former accomplices had been in contact with the victim's family before the incident and harbored resentment due to a grudge from many years ago.
After further investigation and interrogation, the accomplice finally confessed to being the murderer and gave a detailed account of the crime. It turned out that he exploited Roger's greed for jewelry, deliberately sending him anonymous text messages to lure him in, and then taking the opportunity to kill him to cover his tracks.
After the truth came out, Roger was acquitted. As he walked out of the interrogation room, he saw Lynn waiting outside.
"Thank you," Roger said sincerely. "If it weren't for you, I might never have been able to clear my name."
Lynn shook his head. "I just did what I was supposed to do," he said. "I hope you can repent and start anew."
Roger didn't speak. He gave Lynn a deep look, then turned and left.
As night fell, the city's neon lights flickered, and the streets bustled with traffic. Lynn and Hans stood at a busy intersection, their eyes fixed intently on the passing vehicles. They were investigating a bizarre case, and the surveillance footage from the day of the incident had become a crucial clue in their hands.
"Hans, look! Doesn't that white Mercedes look a lot like the car in the surveillance footage?" Lynn suddenly pointed to a car speeding past on the screen and said.
Hans quickly moved closer, carefully compared the two vehicles, and nodded. "That's right, it's this car! The license plate matches too, we need to follow it!"
The two immediately started their car, merged into traffic, and followed the white Mercedes closely. The Mercedes seemed unaware that it was being followed, speeding through several blocks before finally stopping outside a drive-in bar.
Lynn and Hans parked their car some distance away, observing the Mercedes' movements. The car door opened, and a man in a black suit got out. He looked around, then walked into the tavern.
"Looks like we've come to the right place," Lynn said in a low voice. "This man is very likely the key figure we're looking for."
Hans nodded. "We have to be careful and not alert them. I'll go to the tavern to check things out first; you stay here and keep watch."

After saying that, Hans got out of the car and walked into the tavern as if nothing had happened. Lynn stayed in the car, continuing to observe the Mercedes and the surroundings.
A short while later, Hans emerged from the tavern, his expression grave. "Lynn, the situation is complicated. That man was having a private conversation with a group of people in the tavern, and I vaguely heard them mention words like 'deal' and 'goods.'"
Lynn frowned. "It seems we've indeed uncovered a big case. However, now we need to find a way to get close to that man and obtain more information."
Hans nodded. "I have a plan, but it requires us to work together seamlessly."
The two quickly discussed the matter and then began their operation. Lynn stayed in the car to continue monitoring, while Hans changed his clothes and went back into the tavern.
This time, Hans went straight to the table where the man was. He pretended to be a customer passing by and sat down in the empty seat next to the man. The man glanced at him warily but didn't say anything.
Hans deliberately struck up conversations with the others at the table, trying to get the man's attention. Sure enough, the man soon started talking to him. Hans took the opportunity to ask the man about the "transaction" and the "goods," and although the man was somewhat wary, he still revealed some information.
Just then, Lynn suddenly sent a message: The Mercedes started and seemed to be preparing to leave! Hans was startled. He quickly made an excuse to leave his table and went out of the pub to meet Lynn.
"Quick! We have to catch up with that car!" Lynn said urgently.
The two quickly got into their car, started the engine, and followed closely behind the Mercedes. The Mercedes seemed to sense something and began to accelerate, trying to shake off its pursuers. But Lynn and Hans were experienced detectives, and they fearlessly gave chase.
A thrilling chase unfolded under the cover of night. The Mercedes constantly changed lanes, ran red lights, and even drove against traffic, trying to shake off their pursuers. But Lynn and Hans remained relentlessly in pursuit, their driving skills and reaction speed at their peak.
Finally, at a secluded street corner, the Mercedes was forced to stop. The door opened, and the man in the black suit hurriedly got out, trying to escape. But Lynn and Hans had already quickly gotten out of the car and stopped him.
"Who are you? Why are you chasing me?" the man asked in terror.
"We are police officers." Lynn showed his badge. "You are suspected of involvement in a major case, and we need your cooperation in the investigation."
The man's expression changed, and he tried to resist, but Lynn and Hans quickly subdued him. The two men swiftly put the man in their car and drove away from the scene.
"Finally caught him!" Hans said with a sigh of relief.
Lynn nodded. "That was truly thrilling. However, we need to continue investigating this case further to see what secrets are hidden behind it."
Under the cover of darkness, a black sedan sped along the highway. Inside, Lynn sat in the driver's seat, while in the passenger seat sat the suspect he had just apprehended—a criminal implicated in multiple major cases. Their destination was FBI headquarters, where Lynn was preparing to hand the suspect over to a specialized team for interrogation.
The atmosphere inside the carriage was tense and silent, broken only by the sound of the wheels and the occasional siren. Lynn glanced at the suspect beside him every now and then, his eyes gleaming with vigilance.
Suddenly, the suspect sat up abruptly, his eyes flashing with a fierce light. He quickly scanned his surroundings before launching a surprise attack on Lynn.
"What are you doing?!" Lynn exclaimed, reacting quickly and trying to restrain the suspect. But the suspect was extremely strong, breaking free of Lynn's grasp and throwing a punch hard at Lynn's face.
