Chapter 189 A Heartwarming Story of Siblings
Hans nodded in agreement, "Yes! We must do everything in our power to track him down!"
So the two began to divide the work: Lynn was responsible for communicating with the laboratory to obtain more clues about drugs;
Hans was in charge of investigating Ward's possible hiding place and his connections with other gangs. Both of them were determined to bring Ward to justice.
The next day, sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, dappling the headboard of Lynn's bed. He rubbed his sleepy eyes, picked up his phone to check the time; it was almost noon. Just then, a message popped up on his phone screen.
It was a message from her adoptive father, George: "Lynn, come home for dinner today. I have something to discuss with you."
Lynn frowned, a strange premonition rising in his heart. He quickly replied with a message: "Okay, I'll be right back." Then he got up, washed up, changed into clean clothes, and drove to George's house.
Lynn's thoughts raced the whole way. He didn't know why George had suddenly invited him home for dinner, but his intuition told him that this meal was probably not so simple. He thought of the Ward case he was currently investigating and couldn't help but feel a little worried: Had some new clue emerged in the case, requiring him to come home to discuss countermeasures?
When Lynn arrived at George's house, he noticed something was off. His sister, Gwen, was standing in the doorway.
A mysterious smile played on his lips as George busied himself in the kitchen, the clatter of pots and pans echoing through the air.
"Lynn, you're back!" Gwen greeted him, taking his hand and leading him into the living room. "Come sit down, there's a surprise waiting for you!"
Lynn sat on the sofa, looking around in confusion. He noticed that the living room was decorated differently than usual; the balloons and ribbons hanging on the wall made him realize that today seemed to be a special day.
"What kind of surprise is it?" he couldn't help but ask.
"Don't worry, it'll be right there." Gwen smiled mysteriously and turned to walk into the kitchen.
A moment later, George came out carrying a large plate with a beautiful cake on it. Several candles were stuck on the cake, their flickering light illuminating the words "Happy Birthday" on it.
Lynn froze, realizing then that it was his birthday. He looked at George and Gwen, a warm feeling welling up inside him. Being able to celebrate with his family on this special day was a rare happiness for him.
"Make a wish quickly!" Gwen urged.
Lynn nodded, closed his eyes, and silently made a birthday wish. Then, he took a deep breath.
The candles on the cake were blown out.
"Happy birthday!" George and Gwen said in unison, and applause and laughter echoed in the living room.
However, at this heartwarming moment, Lynn's phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the screen...
It was a call from his colleague Hans. He hesitated for a moment, but answered the phone anyway.
"Lynn, where are you? We just received news that Ward has appeared!" Hans's voice was urgent and tense.
Lynn's heart sank. He looked at the cake and his family in front of him, his heart filled with contradictions and struggles.
He knew that leaving at this time would hurt his family, but as an FBI agent, he couldn't let go of any opportunity to capture Ward.
"I—I'll be right back," Lynn managed to say before hanging up the phone.
"What happened?" George keenly noticed Lynn's unusual behavior.
Lynn sighed and told George and Gwen about Ward's appearance. He explained, "I can't let this opportunity slip by; I have to go back immediately."
George was silent for a moment, then patted Lynn on the shoulder. "Go, son. Your duty is important, we understand."
Gwen nodded. "Brother, be careful!"
It was late at night when Lynn returned to George's house. He found the lights still on, and a pair of slippers and a dinner left for him at the door. He went into the living room and saw George and Gwen sitting on the sofa waiting for him.
"You're back!" Gwen said first. "We've been waiting for you to celebrate your birthday together!"
Lynn was moved to tears. He went over and hugged George and Gwen tightly. "Thank you,"
It's so good to have you all.
The setting sun cast its golden rays into the cozy living room. Gwen sat on the sofa, flipping through a brochure about the school's anniversary celebrations, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. Lynn, meanwhile, was busy at the coffee table, organizing her recent work documents.
"Lynn, are you free tomorrow?" Gwen looked up at Lynn, her tone filled with hope.
Lynn stopped what she was doing, turned around, and smiled gently, "What's wrong, Gwen? Is there anything planned for tomorrow?"
Gwen stood up, walked over to Lynn, and handed him the brochure. "Look, tomorrow is our school's anniversary celebration. There will be lots of fun activities and performances. Can you come with me?"
Lynn took the brochure, glanced at the colorful array of activities on it, and couldn't help but feel a little hesitant.
He'd been incredibly busy with work lately, and the case he was working on had reached a critical point; he'd originally planned to work overtime tomorrow. But looking at Gwen's expectant eyes, he didn't want to disappoint her.
"Hmm---"-I'll try to arrange the time." Lynn said vaguely, trying to leave himself some room for maneuver.
However, Gwen keenly caught the hesitation in his tone. "Is something wrong? If you're really busy, then forget it—" Her tone carried a hint of disappointment.
Seeing this, Lynn's heart softened. He reached out and gently patted Gwen's shoulder. "Don't overthink it. I just need to adjust my work schedule a little. Your school anniversary is so important, how could I miss it?"
Upon hearing this, Gwen's eyes lit up immediately. "Really? You'll really come with me?"
"Of course, when have I ever lied to you?" Lynn nodded with a smile to confirm.
Gwen jumped up with joy, hugged Lynn, and said excitedly, "That's wonderful! Thank you, Lynn!"
On the day of the school anniversary, the sun shone brightly, and the school was bustling with activity. Lynn accompanied Gwen as they strolled through the crowds, soaking in the festive atmosphere. Both of them carried small trinkets they had picked up at the stalls earlier.
"Gwen, do you think this is pretty?" Lynn held up a delicate little ornament and waved it in front of Gwen.
Gwen took the pendant and examined it carefully. "Hmm, it's very cute! It suits your style perfectly," she teased with a smile.
The two chatted and laughed as they arrived at a food stall. A variety of enticing aromas wafted through the air, making their mouths water.
"Wow, it smells so good! Let's buy some food." Gwen's eyes lit up, and she pulled Lynn's arm toward the stall.
Lynn smiled and nodded, "Okay, let's see what good food we have."
Just as the two were choosing food, a tall, handsome boy walked over. He stared intently at Gwen, a confident smile playing on his lips.
"Hey beautiful, are you alone?" the guy said, striking up a conversation.
Gwen paused, looked up at the boy in front of her, then glanced warily at Lynn beside her, a hint of embarrassment flashing in her eyes. Before she could speak, Lynn had already stepped in front of her.
"She's not alone," Lynn said calmly, a hint of wariness in his eyes.
The boy glanced at Lynn, seemingly not taking him seriously. "Oh? Are you her boyfriend?"
"That's not important," Lynn said in a somewhat indifferent tone. "We're enjoying the anniversary celebration right now and don't want to be disturbed."
The boy smiled, seemingly undeterred. "It's okay, I just wanted to get to know this beautiful lady. You wouldn't be so stingy, would you?"
Lynn frowned slightly. He could sense the boy harassing Gwen, and he couldn't help but feel annoyed. Just as he was about to lash out, Gwen gently tugged at his sleeve.
"Lynn, let's just ignore him," Gwen whispered.
Lynn glanced at Gwen, and seeing that she didn't want to get entangled with this boy, she nodded. "Okay, let's go."
However, just as the two turned to leave, the boy suddenly reached out and grabbed Gwen's arm. "Hey, beautiful, don't rush off. I haven't introduced myself yet. My name is Jack, and I'm the captain of the school basketball team."
Gwen was startled by the boy's actions. She struggled to break free of his grip, but he only tightened his hold. Seeing this, Lynn immediately stepped forward, grabbed the boy's wrist, and said coldly, "Let her go."
The boy was taken aback, not expecting Lynn to suddenly intervene. He stared wide-eyed at Lynn, "What are you doing? I just wanted to get to know her."
"She doesn't want to know you." Lynn's tone was firm. "Now, please let her go."
The boy's face turned somewhat grim; he seemed unwilling to give up so easily. But seeing Lynn's determined gaze and tightly clenched wrist, he finally loosened his grip.
"Alright, since you don't want to get to know me, then I won't bother you any longer." After saying that, the boy turned around and left the stall.
Lynn watched the boy's departing figure, a cold glint in his eyes. He turned to Gwen, "Are you alright?"
Gwen shook her head. "I'm fine. Thank you, Lynn."
"You're welcome," Lynn said. "Let's continue choosing what to eat."
The two returned to the stall and continued selecting food. However, the little incident had somewhat dampened their spirits. Gwen couldn't help but sigh, "Sigh, what was supposed to be a nice school anniversary celebration turned into this."
Lynn smiled and said, "It's alright, I'm here. I won't let you get hurt."
He handed the food to Gwen, saying, "Try this, it should taste good."
Despite the unpleasant incident, Gwen's mood gradually improved with Lynn's company. They continued to stroll around the school anniversary celebration, enjoying this special day.
Soon after, the two arrived at a stall selling handicrafts. Gwen's eyes were drawn to some exquisite trinkets. "Wow, these trinkets are so pretty!" she exclaimed excitedly, pointing to some earrings and bracelets.
Lynn glanced at the jewelry; it was indeed very exquisite and beautiful. He smiled and said to Gwen, "Buy it if you like it."
Gwen nodded and began to carefully select. Just then, Jack, the boy who had approached them earlier, reappeared in their sight. This time, he didn't approach them directly, but stood at a distance, observing them.
Lynn noticed Jack's presence and frowned slightly. He didn't want to cause any more trouble on this special day. So he took Gwen's hand. "Let's go."
Gwen looked at Lynn with some confusion. "What's wrong? I haven't made my choice yet."
"It's nothing, I just suddenly remembered I have something to do," Lynn made up a reason. "Let's buy it next time." With that, he pulled Gwen away from the stall. Seeing this, Jack could only turn around and leave helplessly.
Lynn secretly breathed a sigh of relief, hoping this little incident wouldn't spoil their mood for the day. Hand in hand, they continued strolling through the school anniversary celebration, enjoying this rare moment of joy. The unpleasant incident was gradually left behind, leaving only fond memories.
As night fell and the city lights began to twinkle, Lynn and Gwen, having finished their joyful school anniversary celebration, set off on their way home, filled with memories and a touch of weariness. They chatted as they walked, Gwen's face beaming with happiness, while Lynn would occasionally turn his head to gaze at her tenderly.
"Lynn, today is such a happy day!" Gwen said excitedly. "Thank you for being with me all this time."
"Silly girl, why are you being so polite with me?" Lynn smiled and ruffled Gwen's hair. "I'll do anything to make you happy."
As they talked and laughed, they unknowingly wandered into a relatively secluded alley. The alley was dimly lit.
Only a few dilapidated streetlights flickered with a faint light. Lynn instinctively tightened his grip on Gwen's hand, cautiously glancing around.
Suddenly, a series of hurried footsteps came from behind. Lynn and Gwen turned around at the same time and saw three figures rapidly approaching them. The three wore hats and masks, revealing only pairs of fierce eyes.
"Run!" Lynn whispered to Gwen, pulling her along as they quickened their pace.
However, the three men were clearly prepared. They quickly caught up and blocked Lynn and Gwen's path. One of them held a gleaming dagger and glared at them menacingly.
"Kid, if you know what's good for you, hand over the money!" one of them threatened. "Otherwise, don't blame us for being impolite!"
Lynn coldly surveyed the three people before him, quickly making a judgment. He knew he couldn't let Gwen get hurt, so he released her hand and whispered, "Gwen, stay here and don't move."
I'll take care of them quickly.
After saying that, Lynn walked towards the three men. He was agile and quick, and in the blink of an eye, he was entangled in combat with them. Although the three men were armed, Lynn was not afraid at all. He skillfully dodged their attacks while looking for an opportunity to counterattack.
Gwen stood to the side, watching the battle intently. Although she knew Lynn was formidable, seeing him fight three knife-wielding assailants still filled her with worry. She clenched her fists tightly, silently praying for Lynn.
After a fierce battle, Lynn finally subdued the three men one by one. He walked over to Gwen,
He asked with concern, "Are you alright?"
Gwen shook her head, her eyes shining with admiration. "Lynn, you're amazing!" She hugged Lynn excitedly. "Thank you for protecting me!"
Lynn gently patted Gwen on the back. "Silly girl, protecting you is what I should do." He then turned his gaze to the three robbers lying on the ground. "We need to call the police now."
The police arrived quickly and took the three robbers away. Lynn and Gwen also went to the police station to give their statements. By the time everything was settled, it was late at night.
As the two walked out of the police station, Lynn looked at Gwen's slightly tired face and felt a pang of guilt. "Gwen, I'm sorry for making you go through this."
Gwen smiled. "It's okay. With you by my side, I'm not afraid of anything." As she spoke, she took Lynn's arm. "Let's go home."
The two walked home arm in arm, their hearts intertwined even though it was late at night. Gwen's admiration for Lynn deepened, and Lynn secretly resolved to always stay by Gwen's side and protect her.
A few days later, Lynn and Gwen talked about that night again. Gwen still praised Lynn's bravery, while Lynn humbly said that he had only done what he should do.
"Lynn, weren't you really afraid?" Gwen asked curiously. "Those were three armed robbers!"
Lynn looked at Gwen's earnest eyes and smiled slightly. "Actually, I'm a little nervous too," he said honestly. "But I know I can't back down; I have to protect you."
Hearing Lynn's reply, Gwen felt a surge of warmth in her heart. She looked at Lynn deeply, then hugged him tightly. "Lynn, thank you for always being there for me."
Lynn hugged Gwen back, his heart filled with gratitude and happiness. He knew that no matter what difficulties and challenges he might encounter in the future, with Gwen's support and companionship, he would be able to forge ahead fearlessly. Gwen also deeply understood that Lynn was one of the most important people in her life, and she would always cherish this rare sibling bond and accompany Lynn through every moment.
Night had fallen, but the lights in George's house shone with a warm glow. George, Lynn, and Gwen returned home, weary from the day and filled with fond memories. George, the siblings' father, was always proud of his children, and tonight he planned to cook them a delicious dinner himself.
In the kitchen, George was busy, the sounds of stir-frying and the aroma of food mingling together to create a warm, homey atmosphere. Soon, several delicious-looking dishes were placed on the table.
