Frank was silent for a moment, his fingers tapping lightly on the table, seemingly processing Kate's information.
So, you mean you've already gotten close to him?
"Yes," Kate nodded, her eyes brimming with confidence. "This morning's 'hitchhikkick' was a good start. I could sense he was a little wary of me, but not completely averse. He's not the type to completely reject contact, which means he still has some use to him."
Frank nodded slightly, his gaze shifting from the documents on the table to Kate's face. "So, what are you planning to do next?"
Kate leaned back in her chair, arms crossed, a sly smile playing on her lips. "Follow up. I'll create more 'coincidences' to gradually gain his trust. He doesn't know I'm a reporter; I can pretend to be an ordinary citizen, or someone in need of help. As long as I can lower his guard, I can find a way in."
Frank's gaze sharpened. He stared at Kate, pondered for a moment, and finally said slowly, "Kate,"
Are you sure you want to do this? If Lynn is really as dangerous as you say, you might end up playing a very painful game.
“I’m not afraid of pain.” Kate’s eyes held a newfound resolve. “Frank, this is the most authentic inside story we can get our hands on. If I can obtain core intelligence related to the Holy Blood Alliance, it will be the biggest headline in our newspaper this year.”
Frank smiled slightly, picked up the coffee cup on the table, and took a sip. "You're right. If you can get your hands on these things, it'll definitely be headline news." He put down the coffee cup, his gaze returning to Kate. "But you have to be careful. The FBI isn't an ordinary law enforcement agency, and Lynn isn't an ordinary agent. He's far more vigilant than you think, and once he discovers your identity, he won't hesitate to cut off all contact."
Kate nodded gently. "I know. I'll be careful."
Frank stared at her, a complex emotion in his eyes. He finally sighed. "Alright, since you've made up your mind, then go ahead. But I warn you, Kate, don't underestimate Lynn. He may seem calm, but there's an unshakeable aura of danger about him. If you go too far, he'll make you pay."
"I understand." Kate's tone remained calm, but her eyes shone with determination.
Frank nodded. "Go ahead then. Let me know as soon as there's any progress."
Kate stood up, picked up her trench coat, and smiled confidently. "Don't worry, Frank. This time, I will bring back a truth that will shock everyone."
She turned and left the office, her steps steady, her eyes shining with unwavering determination.
As night fell, the streets of Brooklyn were gradually bathed in the glow of neon lights. The hustle and bustle of the after-get off work rush had faded away, and the warm glow of the cafe's counter lights made the night feel especially cozy. Kate sat by the window, holding a hot latte, her gaze occasionally glancing towards the cafe's entrance.
She knew Lynn had a habit—he would always stop here for a moment and buy a cup of coffee before going home from get off work. She had noticed this through observation, and tonight, she planned to use this detail to shorten the distance between them.
A few minutes later, Lynn appeared as expected. His figure appeared tall and composed in the doorway light, his black overcoat swaying slightly with his steps. He pushed open the door, glanced around, and soon his eyes met Kate's.
Kate gave a faint smile and raised her coffee cup in greeting, "Lynn."
Lynn frowned, clearly surprised to see her again, but he didn't say anything. Instead, he walked over and stood by her table.
"Kate?" His voice was calm but tinged with inquiry. "What are you doing here?"
"Don't get me wrong," Kate took a sip of her coffee, her smile gentle. "I come to this coffee shop often. I never expected to run into you again. Perhaps, this is just luck?"
Lynn didn't respond immediately, but looked at her quietly for a few seconds, then nodded. "Perhaps."
Kate put down her coffee cup, stood up, and said, "If you don't mind, I'll buy you a drink?"
Lynn raised an eyebrow slightly, his gaze lingering on her face for a moment before he nodded. "Whatever you say."
Kate smiled, walked to the counter, and ordered a black coffee. When paying, she subtly turned her head away.
Kate glanced at Lynn's expression out of the corner of her eye. This man always carried an air of calm and vigilance, like a soldier ready to respond to any unexpected situation. This demeanor made Kate both wary and intrigued.
She returned to Lynn with the coffee, handed him the paper cup, and said, "Your black coffee."
"Thank you." Lynn took the coffee, her voice still calm, but there seemed to be a hint of inquiry in her eyes.
"Are you off work?" Kate asked, her tone relaxed, as if she were having a casual chat.
"Yes." Lynn took a sip of coffee and didn't say anything more.
Kate chuckled softly, tapping her fingers lightly on the table. "Okay, I admit, I was kind of thinking of talking to you. You know, my car really broke down this morning, but it's fixed now. I just wanted to express my gratitude and say thank you."
Lynn's eyes flickered slightly, but she remained largely unmoved. "No need. It's just on my way." "Are you always this cold?" Kate feigned a complaint, tinged with a hint of mockery. "Someone helped you out, can't you respond a little more kindly?"
"I've accepted the coffee," Lynn said calmly.
Kate couldn't help but laugh. "Well, I'd be honored."
Lynn glanced at her, picked up her coffee, and said, "If there's nothing else, I should go home."
Kate feigned surprise, widening her eyes. "Going home? Brooklyn nights are so lovely, aren't you going to enjoy them?"
Lynn stopped what she was doing, looked up at her, and said, "Everyone relaxes in a different way."
Kate's lips curled into a slight smile as her mind raced, quickly planning the next topic. She knew this man was difficult to approach, but she wasn't one to give up easily.
"Since you're going home, would you mind if I let you have a little while?" Kate gave a perfectly timed smile. "I happen to have something I'd like to talk to you about."
Lynn raised an eyebrow, didn't answer, but looked at her for a few seconds, then nodded, "Five minutes."
Kate's smile deepened. "Five minutes is enough."
The two walked out of the cafe together. The night breeze blew Kate's blonde hair. She glanced down at the trench coat in her hand, then jogged a few steps to catch up with Lynn.
"Your home isn't far from here, is it?" Kate asked, her tone light.
"Yes," Lynn replied briefly.
"That's great. I'll treat it as a walk and we can chat." Kate smiled gently, deliberately making her tone sound harmless.
Along the way, Kate tried to lighten the mood with lighthearted topics, such as the café's decor and Brooklyn's nightlife, but Lynn's responses remained brief, even somewhat perfunctory. However, she wasn't angry, because she knew this coldness was merely his instinctive defensiveness, and all she needed was a breakthrough.
A few minutes later, the two arrived at Lynn's doorstep. Lynn took out his keys, stopped at the door, and turned to Kate. "Five minutes have passed."
"Wait a minute." Kate blinked, giving a slightly mischievous smile. "Okay, I know this is a bit abrupt, but would you mind if I came in and sat down?"
Lynn frowned slightly, a hint of wariness in her eyes. "Why are you so interested?"
Kate responded without hesitation, "You saved my life, is it wrong for me to want to know more about you? You always seem so aloof, like you're hiding countless stories. To reporters, you're practically a living enigma."
"A reporter?" Lynn's brows furrowed even deeper, her tone turning icy.
Kate immediately realized she had misspoke, but she reacted quickly, raising her hands in a gesture of surrender. "Don't be nervous! I'm just a regular reporter, I only write about human stories and local news, I'm not the kind of person who digs into people's private lives."
Lynn stared at her, his gaze sharp as a knife, seemingly scrutinizing the truthfulness of her words. After a few seconds, he finally spoke, "Go in. Fifteen minutes."
Kate's smile instantly lit up. "You're such a gentleman."
Lynn opened the door, and Kate followed him inside. The interior of the house was simple, with a clean and neat style, and the furniture was arranged in an orderly manner, clearly the home of someone who was organized in their life.
Kate glanced around, her gaze lingering briefly on a few photographs on the wall. One showed Lynn standing next to an antique car with a man who looked older than him, while another showed Lynn sitting at a piano with a blonde girl. The people in the photos were smiling, but their expressions were starkly different from Lynn's current cold demeanor.
"Your sister?" Kate pointed to the girl in the photo.
"Yes." Lynn came out of the kitchen, holding a glass of water and handed it to her.
"You seem like someone who cares a lot about family," Kate said with a smile, taking the water. "That's quite different from your usual coldness."
Lynn didn't respond. Instead, she sat on the sofa, looking at her calmly. "What do you want to talk about?"
Kate took a small sip of water, sat down opposite him, and adopted a listening posture. "I'm not really anything special, I just want to get to know you. What do you do for a living?"
"Government civil servants," Lynn said casually.
Kate raised an eyebrow. "That simple?"
"The nature of my job means I can't say much," Lynn said, leaning back on the sofa, her eyes still wary.
Kate knew the conversation wasn't going to go too smoothly, but she didn't rush it. Instead, she changed the subject to a lighter one: "Do you go to that coffee shop every day?"
Lynn nodded slightly. "It's a habit."
"Some habits are quite interesting," Kate smiled, then asked casually, "For example, don't you think Brooklyn has been acting a little strange lately? Like—something unusual has happened?"
Lynn's expression shifted slightly, but she quickly regained her composure. "What do you mean?"
Kate shrugged casually. "Oh, I've just heard some rumors, like some organization is active here, some kind of mysterious thing like blood sacrifice. I find it ridiculous, but I'm also very curious."
"You've been trying to get close to me." Lynn's voice broke the silence, his tone low and deep, like the resonance of a cello in the night. "What do you want, Kate?"
Kate's smile faltered for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure, tilting her head to look at him. "That sounds like an interrogation, Lynn. What are you implying about me?"
"It's not suspicion." Lynn put down her coffee cup, placed her hands on the table, leaned forward slightly, and locked her gaze into Kate's eyes like a sharp blade. "It's confirmation. I know who you are, and I know what you want."
Kate's breath hitched for a second, but she quickly regained her composure, giving a slightly helpless smile. "Alright, since you put it that way, I'm not going to hide it anymore. I'm a reporter, and I am indeed investigating some things."
"The Holy Blood Alliance," Lynn added coldly, as if he already knew everything.
Kate raised an eyebrow, a slight look of surprise on her face, but she quickly masked it. "Since you already know, I won't beat around the bush." She straightened her posture, her tone frank. "Yes, I'm investigating the Holy Blood Alliance. Their recent activities have attracted a lot of attention, and you—your connection with them is clearly not simple."
"So you're trying to get news out of me by getting close to me?" Lynn's voice wasn't angry; instead, it carried a chilling calmness.
“Don’t say that,” Kate spread her hands, trying to appear more sincere. “You’re a very principled person, I can see that. You’re fighting these guys, and I just want to expose the truth. We can actually cooperate; you have the intelligence, I have the platform, and together we can bring down the Holy Blood Alliance.”
Lynn didn't respond immediately, but stared at her, as if judging the truthfulness of her words. He tapped his fingertips lightly on the table twice, then slowly shook his head. "You don't understand these people, nor do you understand me. The Holy Blood Alliance is not something you can interfere with lightly."
"Why not?" Kate's voice suddenly rose, her eyes filled with stubbornness. "They're a terrorist organization, destroying the lives of ordinary people. If you really want to stop them, why not let more people know the truth? Public anger can crush any organization."
"Anger?" Lynn sneered, a hint of sarcasm in his voice. "You think this is just an ordinary crime? The tentacles of the Holy Blood Alliance have reached deep into society. The technology, resources, and manpower they possess far exceed your imagination. What can you change by writing a headline? It will only drag more innocent people into it, including yourself."
Kate paused, opening her mouth as if to retort, but Lynn's gaze silenced her. His eyes held no contempt, only a cold resolve and a ruthless acceptance of reality.
Just as the air grew increasingly tense, a low hum suddenly reached Lynn's ears. His expression changed abruptly, and his gaze quickly swept to the window. On the street outside, a black van was parked quietly by the roadside, its windows reflecting the faint glow of the streetlights.
"Kate, get down!" Lynn practically yelled.
The next second, the window shattered with a deafening roar, shards of glass flying everywhere. A beam of intense light shot into the room from outside, followed by a deafening explosion. The shockwave overturned the table, sending debris flying everywhere. Lynn lunged at Kate, pinning her to the ground and shielding her from the flying debris with her own body.
Kate was so startled by the sudden attack that she couldn't speak for a moment, only hearing the deafening roar in her ears, her mind blank. Lynn quickly rolled over and got up, grabbing the gun with one hand and pulling her up from the ground with the other.
"Quick, to the basement!" Lynn's voice was calm but carried a hint of pressure.
Kate gritted her teeth, forced herself to stand up, and followed Lynn towards the basement entrance. Just as they ran down a few steps, the door was violently flung open, and several dark figures rushed into the room, their weapons reflecting a cold light.
Without hesitation, Lynn turned, raised his gun, and quickly pulled the trigger. The bullet struck the enemy at the front with precision, who groaned and fell to the ground, his weapon sliding to the side.
"Who are they?" Kate gasped, her voice filled with obvious fear.
"The Holy Blood Alliance," Lynn replied while firing, his tone as cold as ice. "It seems your investigation is more dangerous than you imagined."
Kate bit her lower lip, suppressing her fear. She knew this wasn't the time to ask questions, so she could only lower her head and follow Lynn in a rapid retreat. They rushed into the basement, and Lynn immediately pressed a hidden switch. The iron door slowly closed, temporarily isolating them from the attack outside.
The basement was small, but it was furnished like a makeshift safe house, with weapons placed around the perimeter.
Ammunition and emergency supplies. Kate looked around, her eyes filled with shock and unease.
"You've been preparing for this scenario all along?" she asked, a hint of disbelief in her voice.
"Preparation is a habit." Lynn quickly loaded the magazine, glanced down to check his weapon, "especially against people like the Holy Blood Alliance."
"Why did they attack you?" Kate's voice trembled, but a resolute determination began to shine through her eyes.
"Is it because of me?"
"Maybe." Lynn looked up at her, his gaze sharp as a knife. "It could also be because I've been watching their actions. This has nothing to do with you, Kate, but now you're involved."
Kate was silent for a moment, then asked in a low voice, "What should we do?"
Lynn handed her a spare pistol. "If you want to live, do as I say. Now listen carefully, they won't leave easily. We have to break through."
Kate took the gun, her hands trembling slightly, but she didn't flinch. She took a deep breath and looked at Lynn. "I'll do as you say."
Lynn nodded, turned and walked to the other side of the basement, opening a hidden door leading to the street. He glanced back at Kate, his voice low and calm: "Stay close to me, don't make a sound. If I say run, run, don't look back."
Kate gritted her teeth and nodded.
