Chapter 217 We're Just Friends
Chapter 217 We're Just Friends
Lynn's body tensed instantly, as if some instinctive switch had been flipped. He quickly walked in that direction, his movements light and swift, like a hunting leopard. The man seemed to sense something, snatched Kate's purse, and turned to rush into the crowd.
"Kate!" Lynn called softly, gesturing for her to turn around.
Kate was looking at her ice cream when she turned around and saw the thief's back and the empty beach chair. She froze, "My wallet!?"
Lynn had already dashed off, chasing the thief along the beach. His steps were steady and powerful, each step shortening the distance between him and his target. Tourists nearby stopped to watch the spectacle, some even taking out their phones to record videos.
The thief clearly hadn't expected to be watched. He frantically pushed through the crowd, trying to use the dense tourists on the beach to conceal his presence. But Lynn's eyes remained fixed on him, without the slightest hesitation. He easily dodged several people blocking his way, nimbly leaping over obstacles like a professional hunter.
The thief dashed across the beach and into a narrow alley. Lynn followed closely behind. The alley was shrouded in shadows, and the air was thick with the humid heat of summer. The thief, seemingly convinced he had shaken off his pursuers, stopped to catch his breath and glanced back.
However, Lynn was already standing not far from him, his gaze as cold and sharp as a knife.
"Put your wallet down." Lynn's deep voice echoed in the narrow alley, devoid of any emotional fluctuation, yet carrying an irresistible power.
The thief hesitated for a moment, a flicker of panic crossing his eyes, but then his expression turned cunning. "This wallet is mine! You have no right to interfere!"
"This is the last time." Lynn's voice remained calm, but the coldness in his eyes sent chills down one's spine. "Put your wallet down, or I'll get it myself."
The thief hesitated for a second, then suddenly pulled a small knife from his pocket and swung it at Lynn. "Don't push me!"
Lynn's eyes remained unchanged. He subtly dodged the attack, then struck with lightning speed, grabbing the thief's wrist holding the knife and twisting it forcefully. The thief screamed, and the knife fell to the ground. Before he could react, Lynn had already pinned him against the wall, his arm firmly under control.
"You've chosen the wrong target," Lynn said in a low voice, twisting the thief's other hand behind his back as well.
They quickly snatched Kate's wallet back from his hands.
The thief struggled a few times, but quickly gave up. He clearly realized that the man in front of him was not an ordinary vacationer, but some kind of person he couldn't afford to mess with.
"Let me go!" the thief's voice trembled slightly. "I only did it for some money, I didn't hurt anyone!"
Lynn gave him a cold look, took out her phone, and dialed the local police. "This is Lynn Wittman, FBI Agent in Brooklyn. I've just apprehended a suspected thief in an alley near Hawaii Beach. The address is—"
After the call ended, the thief was utterly desperate, slumped to the ground, and stopped struggling.
A few minutes later, local police arrived and took the thief away. Lynn briefly explained the situation and left after confirming everything.
When they returned to the beach, Kate was anxiously waiting. As soon as she saw Lynn, she rushed over, "Lynn! Did you find him?"
Lynn handed her the wallet, his tone calm but with a hint of barely perceptible concern, "Check it to see if anything is missing."
Kate took the wallet, opened it to check, and then breathed a sigh of relief. "Everything's there, even the cash. My God, Lynn, how did you do that?"
"It's a habit," Lynn replied simply, then raised an eyebrow. "However, I must remind you to be more careful next time and not leave your bag lying around."
Kate smiled slightly, her voice tinged with gratitude and helplessness. "I understand, Agent. Thank you for saving me again."
"Don't make me save you a third time." Lynn looked at her, a complex emotion in his eyes. "This is a vacation, not a dangerous game."
Kate looked up at him, a complex emotion flashing in her eyes, but she ultimately just smiled and said, "Don't worry, I'll be more careful next time. After all, you're not always around."
Lynn didn't reply, but simply nodded, then turned and walked towards the shaded area on the beach.
As night fell, the Hawaiian sea breeze, carrying a faint scent of coconut, gently caressed every corner of the island. Lynn and Kate, dragging their luggage, entered the lobby of the resort hotel. The hotel's decor was rich in local character, with walls adorned with handwoven tapestries, bamboo furniture, and soft lighting creating a tranquil atmosphere.
Kate stood at the front desk, checking in with her wallet in hand, while Lynn stood behind her, hands in his pockets, his gaze thoughtfully sweeping over their surroundings. He seemed uncomfortable, as if the relaxed atmosphere of the place clashed with his innate wariness.
"We have booked a double suite," Kate said with a smile to the receptionist.
The receptionist was a young local girl. She glanced at the two people in front of her, then gave them a professional smile. "Okay, the suite is ready for you. You can enjoy the facilities of a private balcony and a bathroom with an ocean view, which is a favorite choice for couples."
Upon hearing this, Lynn's eyebrows twitched almost imperceptibly, while Kate paused for a second before giving an awkward smile.
"Well—actually,"
Kate glanced at Lynn, a hint of uncertainty in her voice. "We're not a couple, we're just—friends." She emphasized the word "friends."
The girl at the reception was clearly a little surprised, but her professionalism allowed her to quickly adjust her expression. "Oh, of course, that's no problem. However, if you need, we can also help you adjust to two rooms."
Kate turned to look at Lynn, her tone slightly uncertain, "Well, Lynn, what do you think?"
,
Lynn looked at her calmly, and after a moment said softly, "Two rooms, please."
Kate nodded, secretly relieved, and then said to the receptionist, "Then please change it to two rooms for us."
A few minutes later, the two took the elevator upstairs with their room keys. The atmosphere inside was slightly awkward. Kate looked down at her room key, seemingly avoiding eye contact with Lynn, while Lynn stood to one side.
Zi Guang stared straight at the elevator door, his expression as calm as ever.
"Lynn," Kate finally broke the silence, her voice tinged with a helpless smile, "I don't know if you'll find it strange, but this scene is a bit like those old-fashioned romantic comedies."
"A romantic comedy?" Lynn turned her head slightly to look at her, her tone carrying a hint of confusion.
"Yeah," Kate shrugged. "A man and a woman travel together but find themselves forced to live in the same place, and eventually, through a series of coincidences, sparks fly. Have you seen a movie like that?"
"No." Lynn's answer was so straightforward that Kate almost burst out laughing.
"You really need to watch more movies, Lynn."
Kate shook her head and said with a smile, "But don't worry, I won't force you to play the male lead in a romantic comedy."
Lynn raised an eyebrow slightly. "That's your forte, isn't it?"
Kate paused for a moment, then laughed. "You're really joking, Lynn. It's rare to hear you say something like that."
The elevator dinged as it arrived at their floor. The two stepped out and walked down the corridor to their respective rooms. Kate's room was on one side of the corridor, while Lynn's was opposite hers. Standing in the doorway, she turned to Lynn and said, "Okay, goodnight then. I hope you won't be too relaxed to sleep tonight."
Lynn glanced at her, his lips twitching slightly, but he said nothing. He simply nodded, opened the door, and went inside.
Kate stood there, watching Lynn's door close, and couldn't help but chuckle softly. This man always seemed to have a way of amusing her at the most unexpected times.
She returned to her room, opened the window, and the salty, damp sea breeze rushed in, the sound of waves crashing against the shore clearly audible. Kate took off her shoes, collapsed onto the bed, but the scene from earlier kept replaying in her mind. Lynn's expression, his tone, even his seemingly unintentional dry humor...
Everything felt new and interesting to her.
"This holiday has been really interesting," she murmured to herself, then smiled and closed her eyes.
Meanwhile, Lynn stood by the window, his gaze fixed on the distant sea. He held a glass of water that had just been poured from the minibar in his hand, and the room was so quiet that only the faint hum of the air conditioner could be heard.
He knew that Kate had invited him here for more than just a vacation. There was a strong obsession in her personality—a desire to do everything better, even "save" those she found too oppressive. And Lynn knew perfectly well that he was one of those she wanted to "save."
"Salvation," he murmured, a barely perceptible smile playing on his lips.
He didn't need saving. He was used to his lifestyle, and one could even say that there wasn't much room in his world for so-called "relaxation" or "enjoyment." But undeniably, Kate brought him something that did give him a long-lost sense of vitality.
The next morning, Kate got up early, changed into light sportswear, and prepared to go for a morning run on the beach near the hotel. When she opened her room door, she found Lynn already standing in the hallway, dressed in dark sportswear, seemingly waiting for her.
"You're up really early," Kate said with a smile.
"It's just a habit," Lynn said calmly. "Are you going for a run?"
"That's right." Kate raised an eyebrow. "Are you coming too?"
Lynn nodded and walked to her side. "While you're at it, check on the safety situation around here."
Kate couldn't help but laugh. "You really can't do without work, can you? Okay, then let's run together. But don't even think about beating me; I'm a running expert."
Lynn smiled slightly. "I'm just following you, so don't run too slowly."
Kate paused for a moment, then burst into laughter. "Alright, let's see who can run the fastest."
The two ran side by side toward the beach, the sand beneath their feet soft and damp. The rising sun cast golden rays across the sea, stretching their shadows long.
Lynn sat in the hotel's open-air café, sunlight filtering through the gaps in the parasols and falling on his table.
In the distance lies a vast blue sea, with waves gently lapping against the beach. Tourists stroll by in twos and threes, and the air is filled with a faint scent of sea salt.
He lowered his head, picked up his coffee cup, took a sip, and found that his gaze had unconsciously lingered on Kate not far away.
Kate was on the other side of the hall, chatting animatedly with a blonde woman in a brightly colored dress. Her laughter was clear and melodious, and she would occasionally pat the woman's arm lightly, clearly a long-lost friend. This was the first time Lynn had seen Kate with such an expression—not the professional facade of a journalist, nor the slightly teasing ease she displayed when with him, but a genuine joy and comfort.
He didn't feel left out; he just found the scene novel. Kate was always so adept at socializing, while he was used to observing. He didn't belong in this kind of situation, or rather, he chose not to fit in.
After a while, Kate seemed to remember something and turned to look in Lynn's direction. She smiled apologetically, then pulled the blonde woman towards Lynn.
"Lynn!" Kate called out his name, her smile radiant. "Let me introduce you, this is Lisa, my best friend from college. We haven't seen each other for so many years, I never expected to run into her here!"
The blonde woman, Lisa, glanced at Lynn, a hint of curiosity in her eyes, then extended her hand. "Hello, Kate told me you two were traveling together?"
Lynn stood up and politely shook her hand. "Yes. I'm Lynn."
Lisa raised an eyebrow, a hint of teasing in her eyes. "Wow, Kate, since when?"
Has your travel companion turned into this cold-hearted type?
Kate laughed and gently nudged Lisa's shoulder. "Don't do that. Lynn isn't a talkative person anyway."
But he's actually a very good person.
Lynn didn't respond, but simply nodded, sat down again, and continued drinking her coffee.
Kate clearly didn't mind Lynn's silence, while Lisa seemed even more curious. She sat down next to Kate and whispered, "Is he your boyfriend? You know, the look on your face when you mentioned him just now was quite something."
Kate laughed at this, "Don't talk nonsense, we're just friends."
Lisa raised an eyebrow, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "Alright, friend. But this '
"Your friend's gaze seems to be constantly on you."
Kate glanced up at Lynn and found him quietly gazing into the distance, seemingly oblivious to their conversation. She sighed softly and changed the subject, "Alright, let's not talk about that. How are you? Still working as a designer?"
