Chapter 256 Small Rocket Launcher?
"Mark," Lynn's voice broke the silence in the car, "we may need more resources to deal with this guy. His next move will definitely be bolder."
Mark smiled and said, "Detective, I just hope that next time he shows up, I won't have to stay up all night again."
Lynn did not answer, but a resolute glint flashed in her eyes.
The sky was already beginning to lighten, and the atmosphere inside the car was somewhat somber. Mark yawned, rubbed his face, and tried to shake off his fatigue: "Detective, to be honest, this kind of stakeout is giving me a headache. We've been sitting here all night and haven't seen a single hair; it feels completely pointless."
Lynn leaned back in his chair, his gaze still calmly fixed on the scenery outside the window. He didn't respond immediately, but remained silent for a moment before slowly speaking: "Mark, investigating cases is never like the thrilling scenes in TV dramas. Most of the time, it's like this: tedious, boring, and even seemingly fruitless."
Mark paused for a moment, his tone tinged with confusion: "But Inspector, we have to do something practical, right? Staring at these empty streets like this really makes me feel like... it's a waste of time."
Lynn turned to look at him, a complex emotion in her eyes: "Mark, if I had a choice, I would rather you only ever experience these 'boring' moments, rather than face off against armed thugs or even mutants like 'Spider-Man'."
Mark stared at Lynn in astonishment, unsure how to respond.
Lynn's voice was low but firm: "Every fight, every firefight, could mean injury, or even death. You might find the thrill of hunting down criminals very rewarding, but do you know what? Whenever I see news of my men being injured or killed, my first reaction is self-blame—should I have been more cautious? Should I have put them at risk?"
Mark opened his mouth, but only managed to utter one sentence: "Detective, I never thought you saw things this way."
Lynn sighed softly, turning his gaze back to the window. "You're still young, Mark, and I understand your passion. But remember, no matter how much we want to pursue justice, it should never be built on unnecessary risks. Every moment of tedious surveillance actually means we're reducing the risk of direct conflict. Believe me, it's worth it."
Mark lowered his head, lost in thought. He recalled the excitement he had felt when he first joined the company, always believing that catching criminals should be a thrilling chase, not a long wait like this. But now, he finally understood Lynn's intention and realized his own shallowness.
"Detective," Mark looked up, his eyes filled with respect, "I understand. Perhaps this kind of waiting is indeed tedious, but it has its meaning. Thank you for reminding me, I will remember your words."
Lynn gave a faint smile and patted Mark on the shoulder: "Remember this. Justice is not an impulsive adventure, but a long-term commitment."
The following night, Lynn and Mark sat in the car again, the neon lights of the street reflected on the windows. Mark munched on a cold hamburger, casually observing his surroundings. "Detective," he said, "another long night. But I won't complain this time. You've said it before, this is just part of the daily routine of investigating cases."
Lynn looked out the window, his gaze sharp and focused: "Don't let your guard down, Mark. 'Spider-Man' has committed numerous crimes; he probably doesn't think we'll find him so quickly. Be patient; in times like these, patience is our weapon."
The words had barely left his mouth when a rapidly moving figure flashed across the street from a high-rise building. Lynn instantly became alert, sitting bolt upright: "Mark, look over there!"
Mark was taken aback and looked in the direction Lynn pointed. He saw a figure dressed in black and red quickly climb up the tall building, almost blending into the night.
"It's him!" Mark whispered, excitedly grabbing his flashlight and gear. "Let's go after him!"
Lynn and Mark quickly got out of the car and ran towards the building. As they ran, Lynn gave orders over the communicator: "Target spotted! 'Spider-Man' has appeared, located in the East Side skyscrapers of Manhattan. All nearby officers, provide immediate support!"
The two quickly climbed the building's exterior stairs and arrived at the rooftop. There, the dark red figure was nimbly clinging to the edge of the rooftop, ready to leap to another building at any moment.
"Stop! FBI!" Lynn shouted, pulling out a flashlight and shining it at the other party.
Spider-Man glanced back, showing no intention of stopping. Instead, he leaped lightly, grabbed a dangling cable, and swung like a spider toward the building opposite.
"He's flying!" Mark stared in disbelief. "This guy isn't human at all!"
"Stop talking nonsense, chase after them!" Lynn didn't hesitate, quickly jumped over the rooftop railing, and continued chasing along the pipes beside the building.
The two gave chase, but Spider-Man was incredibly fast, weaving between buildings and occasionally using his slimy webs to block off some of their paths. Lynn and Mark tried to circumvent the obstacles, but soon found themselves falling further and further behind.
Finally, "Spider-Man" made an astonishing leap and disappeared into the shadows of distant buildings. Lynn stood on the edge of the rooftop, panting heavily, staring at the direction he had vanished, his brow furrowed.
Mark caught up from behind, bent over and panting heavily: "Detective... this guy... it's unbelievable... we can't catch him at all!"
Lynn took a deep breath to calm himself, then turned to Mark: "His abilities are indeed outstanding, but that also means he's not just an ordinary criminal. He might be a mutant, or he might have access to high-tech equipment."
"So what do we do next?" Mark wiped the sweat from his brow. "If we keep chasing like this, it's like a cat playing with a mouse."
Lynn pondered for a moment, then calmly said, "We can't rely solely on physical strength to chase him. The fact that his movements are confined to these tall buildings indicates that he is very familiar with the terrain. Next, we need to change our strategy, analyze his modus operandi and movement patterns, and find his fixed hiding place."
Back at the police station, Lynn and Mark sat in the office, surrounded by reports of "Spider-Man's" recent crimes and lists of thefts. Lynn flipped through the files, his brow furrowed. "Mark," he said, "we need to look at this from a different angle. This guy's modus operandi is unusual; he's clearly not after ordinary valuables. We need to figure out what he's really looking for."
Mark nodded. "Indeed, he stole a variety of things, but there didn't seem to be any obvious connection. Jewelry, expensive watches, some high-end electronics... what did these things have in common?"
Lynn pondered for a moment, then circled some items on a list: "No, Mark. His targets aren't unrelated. Look at these; the jewelry was just an early cover. His recent operations have focused on electronics—chips, advanced computer hardware, and even high-tech equipment from certain laboratories."
Mark paused for a moment, then said, "So, he's actually collecting some kind of electronic technology?"
"Very likely." Lynn nodded. "He's not an ordinary thief, nor is he simply a mutant. Perhaps he has a bigger motive, or he might even be working for some force."
The two immediately launched an investigation, starting with the stolen electronic products and visiting the owners of several shops and laboratories where the thefts occurred.
In a high-tech lab that had been burglarized, Lynn spoke with the supervisor: "What was stolen from this lab? Was there any particularly important or proprietary technology?"
The supervisor frowned as he recalled, "We had a batch of high-performance experimental chips and control modules stolen. These were all custom-made, with very narrow applications; ordinary people wouldn't know how to use them."
"Then what can they do?" Lynn continued to ask.
"It's mainly used for the development of automated systems, such as high-end equipment like drone control and remote monitoring systems," the supervisor replied.
After leaving the lab, Mark pondered, "Detective, what does he need these high-performance chips for? Is it to make some kind of device?"
"Very likely," Lynn nodded. "And he knows what he wants; this wasn't a random theft. Next, we need to investigate the market demand for these devices and see if anyone has close ties to this technology."
The two then visited several of the stolen electronics stores and discovered a similar pattern: the stolen items were not ordinary consumer electronics, but high-tech equipment, such as industrial circuit boards, experimental sensors, and some experimental augmented reality glasses.
Mark, tidying his notes, asked with some confusion, "Detective, what kind of equipment would it be if these things were assembled?"
Lynn narrowed his eyes and said in a low voice, "It could be some kind of highly customized technological device, or even a weapon. We must now assume that he is not just a thief, but someone on a special mission."
The latest novel is first published here!
"So what do we do next?" Mark asked.
"Contact the manufacturers of these devices and investigate their uses. At the same time, we need to track where these devices end up and see if there's similar demand in the market," Lynn said coldly. "Once we can find out the possible ultimate uses for these devices, we'll be one step closer to catching 'Spider-Man'."
After several days of intense investigation, Lynn and Mark finally gathered enough information. In a dimly lit conference room, the two stood in front of a whiteboard, and Lynn used a marker to circle the purpose of some key pieces of equipment.
"Mark, let's organize this." Lynn pointed to several devices on the whiteboard. "These high-performance chips, circuit boards, sensors, and fuel mixing devices—can you see what they have in common?"
Mark scratched his head, thought for a moment, and said, "These things are all high-tech equipment, many of them are laboratory-grade, and ordinary people have no use for them. What they have in common is... that they require precise assembly?"
“That’s right.” Lynn nodded and drew another arrow on the whiteboard. “Moreover, the clue we just received from the manufacturer indicates that these devices can be used for a very specific purpose—to manufacture small rockets.”
Mark's eyes widened. "A small rocket? Detective, you mean 'Spider-Man' might be building rockets? Is he going to space or something?"
Lynn didn't answer, but continued his analysis: "The combination of these devices could support a medium-sized rocket launch system. It's not necessarily for spaceflight; it's more likely a highly mobile, high-tech device. For example, for long-range reconnaissance, or... some form of weaponry."
Mark pondered for a moment, then suddenly realized: "So, he might not be acting alone. He might have a team, or even an organization, behind him. Their goal is likely to build a powerful enough rocket to carry out some unconventional activity."
Lynn nodded: "That's my guess too. If 'Spider-Man' really works for some force, then we're not just facing a high-tech thief, but a potential threat."
Mark frowned. "But the question is, why would they need a 'Spider-Man'? To steal equipment the way he does, instead of just buying it directly or going through other channels?"
"Because acquiring these devices is illegal," Lynn explained calmly. "Many of these devices are prohibited from export or require special permits. Spider-Man's abilities allow them to circumvent these restrictions and complete their missions silently."
Mark took a deep breath: "Detective, this is more complicated than we thought. We need to pinpoint his next target as soon as possible and prevent this from escalating further."
“That’s right.” Lynn straightened up, his gaze resolute. “Next, we need to find out the final location of these devices, as well as the possible area of activity of ‘Spider-Man.’ Once we find their gathering point, we can completely dismantle this plan.”
Lynn and Mark investigated for several days, but still couldn't find any solid clues. They traced the whereabouts of several stolen devices and tried to contact experts to understand the potential uses of the small rocket, but all the speculations seemed too complicated, and a crucial clue was always missing.
"Detective," Mark leaned back in his office chair, rubbing his temples, a hint of helplessness in his voice, "Are we overthinking things? This equipment can indeed build rockets, but we can't understand why 'Spider-Man' would use them. Is he trying to launch something, or does he have another purpose?"
Lynn's face was grim, a hint of doubt flashing in his eyes: "Perhaps we have indeed overlooked some crucial point. Mark, compile a list of all the equipment, and we'll go through it all again."
"Understood." Mark nodded, but he could also sense that the two seemed to have reached a stalemate.
That evening, Lynn returned home exhausted. As soon as he opened the door, he saw his sister Gwen on the sofa, flipping through a brochure with an excited expression on her face.
"Brother, you're back!" Gwen looked up at Lynn, her tone light and cheerful. "You know what? There's a college space exhibition downtown right now, and it's really cool! They have all sorts of spacecraft models, and some small rocket launchers designed by the students themselves."
As Lynn took off his coat, he casually asked, "A college student space exhibition? A small rocket launcher?"
"Yes!" Gwen nodded, handing the brochure to Lynn. "It's about small rockets built by university teams. They can't compare to real spacecraft, but I've heard the technology is amazing. Some teams have even launched their own probes into simulated orbits." (End of Chapter)
