Chapter 264 Hope for Humanity's Future
Lynn was silent for a moment, then nodded. "I understand. But trust isn't built out of thin air; it must be proven through actions. I will adjust the plan as soon as possible, involve everyone, and ensure we don't repeat the same mistakes."
Eric managed to calm himself down and sighed, "I hope you're right, Lynn. I don't want to experience another failed operation."
John breathed a sigh of relief and looked at the two of them, saying, "Good, that's how we should be. Next, we need to develop a more precise plan while trying to reduce the tension within the team."
Lynn looked at John, a hint of gratitude in her voice: "Thank you, John. Your rationality was crucial to this mission."
Eric didn't say anything more, but silently sat back down in his chair, a hint of unease still on his face.
Not long after.
The declassified experimental data finally revealed a crucial location—a secret experimental base on the East Coast. Lynn brought this information to the conference room and projected satellite images and internal structural diagrams of the base.
"According to the declassified data," Lynn said, pointing to a cluster of buildings in the image, "this base appears to be one of their core experimental sites. The data mentions that key experimental samples and equipment are stored here, and if these resources can be destroyed or seized, their experimental progress will be greatly delayed."
Eric leaned back in his chair, frowning, and said, "This place looks like a fortress. If we attack directly, it will likely provoke a fierce counterattack, or even alert the enemy."
Lynn nodded in agreement: "That's precisely why we can't act rashly. My suggestion is to infiltrate in batches. First, send out a reconnaissance team to confirm the specific defensive setup and the location of the laboratory, and then send the main force for a precision strike."
John walked to the map, staring at the coastline, and said, "Approaching from here is probably the safest route; the dense vegetation near the coast can provide cover. But we need to be careful, as satellite imagery shows they may have surveillance and sensors deployed around them."
The technician added, "We can use jamming equipment to block some of the surveillance signals during operations, but this may also trigger their alarms, and the window of opportunity is very short."
Lynn nodded: "Therefore, the first reconnaissance team must act quickly and leave no trace. Once the internal layout is confirmed, the second team can operate under cover of night and directly infiltrate the core laboratory area."
Eric looked at Lynn, his tone now tinged with trust: "Are you sure this method of infiltration in batches will work? If the first group is discovered, the entire operation could fail."
“Every action carries risk,” Lynn replied, his gaze unwavering, “but it’s the way to minimize losses. And we must trust the team’s capabilities.”
After the meeting, the team quickly began preparations. The first reconnaissance team, led by Lynn himself, chose to operate under cover of night, using the coastline as cover to silently approach the experimental base.
After passing through the dense vegetation, Lynn raised his hand to signal his team to stop. He used his binoculars to observe the base's outer defenses and discovered multiple surveillance devices and automated sensors distributed around the base.
"The sensors are spaced about 50 meters apart," Lynn said in a low voice, "but there are blind spots. We need to go around here to get closer to the main building."
The team members carefully avoided the sensors and successfully infiltrated a hidden corner on the outskirts of the base. From here, they could clearly see the entrance to the laboratory area and the armed guards patrolling back and forth.
"There are at least five armed men at the entrance, and a drone patrolling overhead," Lynn reported in a low voice into the communicator. "We need to jam the drone's signal to ensure the second team can break through here."
The technician responded over the remote channel: "Understood, the jamming equipment is ready. We only need your signal."
"Stay hidden," Lynn whispered to his team. "We'll observe for another five minutes, then we'll leave."
After confirming there were no further anomalies, the reconnaissance team quietly withdrew, bringing back detailed intelligence. Lynn returned to headquarters and presented the findings to the second team.
"This is their patrol route and schedule," Lynn said, pointing to the hand-drawn map. "We can use drone signal jamming to create gaps in our attack and strike directly at the core laboratory."
Eric nodded: "Okay, we'll move out tomorrow night. We have to succeed on the first try."
Lynn's gaze swept over all the team members present, his tone calm: "Remember, this is a high-risk operation. Our objective is to obtain data and samples, and minimize conflict as much as possible. If anyone is discovered, the others must immediately cover the evacuation."
Late at night, the second task force quietly approached the base's perimeter. The jamming equipment successfully blocked the drones and some surveillance cameras. Lynn led his team quickly through the blind spots and into the base.
The base was eerily quiet, with only the low-frequency hum of the experimental equipment echoing in the air. Lynn gestured for the team to split into two groups: one to continue scouting the surroundings, and the other, led by him personally, to head towards the core laboratory.
Suddenly, a low roar came from afar, followed by the loud clang of metal clashing. The team members quickly raised their guns in alert, and Lynn whispered, "Maintain formation, don't scatter."
The words had barely left his lips when a massive experimental subject leaped out of the shadows. Its skin was pale, its muscles contorted, and its eyes blazed with ferocious rage; its movements were astonishingly fast. One team member, caught off guard, was thrown to the ground, his weapon slipping from his grasp.
"Fire!" Lynn gave the decisive order, and the team immediately opened fire on the test subject. The bullets hit the target, but the test subject seemed unaffected by ordinary ammunition, only slowing its movements slightly before continuing its frenzied charge at the team members.
Lynn quickly switched to tranquilizer dart mode and fired several shots at the test subject's joints and head. The test subject finally let out a painful roar, its movements became sluggish, and it eventually collapsed.
"Everyone be careful," Lynn said calmly. "This isn't the last one."
As he expected, more test subjects poured out from all directions. These mutated creatures varied in appearance, some were huge, and some had deformed limbs, but they all had one thing in common—they were hostile to the team members and attacked them frantically.
Lynn led his team in a steady and methodical advance, using formation and cover to gradually suppress the experimental subjects' offensive. He directed his team to use specially made tranquilizer darts and high-voltage nets to take down the experimental subjects one by one while maintaining the integrity of the team.
"They're using these test subjects to buy time," Eric whispered into the communicator. "We must find the core laboratory as soon as possible."
"Understood." Lynn quickly analyzed the surrounding environment and led the team deeper into the experimental subjects' attack path. He speculated that these creatures were being controlled by humans, and their origin must be related to the core laboratory.
Finally, the group stopped in front of a heavy metal door. This door was clearly different from the others, as it was equipped with a sophisticated fingerprint and iris scanning system.
"This is their core facility," Lynn said in a low voice. "Technical team, come and crack the lock."
The technicians quickly stepped forward and began connecting the equipment to crack the system. But just then, another wave of test subjects surged in from the other end of the corridor, more numerous and more violent than before.
"Cover the technical team!" Lynn ordered, raising his gun and aiming. He knew that if they couldn't hold this door, they wouldn't be able to enter the core laboratory.
The team formed a semi-circular defensive line, concentrating their firepower to suppress the experimental subject's offensive. Lynn, meanwhile, moved constantly within the formation, directing the team members to adjust their positions while personally eliminating the most threatening targets.
The technicians finally cracked the code, and the metal door slowly opened, revealing a huge laboratory filled with high-tech equipment. Inside the transparent culture chamber in the center of the laboratory, several experimental samples floated quietly, each showing varying degrees of mutation.
"Quickly, collect all the data and samples!" Lynn directed his team to rush into the lab. "We don't have much time!"
The team members began using portable devices to download data and packed key samples into specially designed transport containers. Meanwhile, the attacks from the experimental subjects outside intensified, and the defenses gradually crumbled.
"Time's up!" Eric's voice came through the communicator. "Evacuate! Evacuate immediately!"
Lynn glanced around the lab, confirming that all important data and samples had been collected, and decisively ordered: "Everyone retreat! Do not linger!"
The latest novel is first published here!
The team withdrew from the laboratory in an orderly manner, using cover to keep their distance from the experimental subjects. They eventually broke through successfully and returned to the rendezvous point on the outskirts of the base, where they met up with the reinforcement team that had come to their aid.
"We've brought out the data and samples," Lynn said, panting. "But this is just the beginning. We need to analyze this information as soon as possible and figure out their complete plan."
Eric patted him on the shoulder, a tired smile on his face: "Good command, Inspector. At least this time, our efforts weren't in vain."
Lynn led his team deep into the core area of the experimental base, and finally found William Coleman in a control room at the very back. He stood by the control panel, calm and collected, his fingers flying across the keyboard, seemingly unsurprised by Lynn's arrival.
"You've finally arrived, Inspector." William slowly turned around, a hint of coldness in his eyes. "You've kept me waiting for a long time."
Lynn raised his gun, his eyes sharp: "Coleman, stop struggling in vain. This is all over. Drop your plans, come back with us, and you might still have a chance for leniency."
William chuckled and shook his head. "Lenient treatment? You're too naive, Lynn. You don't understand at all what my experiment is for."
"I know what you're doing," Lynn said coldly. "You're using innocent lives to advance your so-called 'Enhanced Mutant Program,' creating out-of-control monsters and disrupting social order. Every step you take tramples on morality and law."
"Monsters?" William's smile turned sarcastic. "In my eyes, they are the next step in human evolution. I'm just accelerating that process. If you had any foresight, you would support my research instead of trying to stop me like some old-fashioned fool."
Lynn was not provoked. He slowly took a step forward and continued, "Your so-called 'evolution' is nothing but satisfying the greed of a few. Those business tycoons who fund you are not concerned with the future of humanity, but with how to profit from genetic technology. You are nothing but their pawn, William."
William's expression shifted slightly, but he quickly regained his composure: "I won't deny their motives, but my research is unstoppable. Even if you capture me today, the plan will continue. You can't change anything."
"This isn't something you can decide." Lynn pointed the gun at William, his tone even more resolute. "This is your last warning: give up the fight. Stop now, and you might leave alive."
William stared at Lynn, remained silent for a few seconds, then suddenly revealed a strange smile. He reached out and pressed a button on the control panel, saying in a low voice, "I was prepared."
The metal door swung open with a bang, and a tall, muscular, enhanced mutant emerged from the shadows. His eyes were vacant, but his movements were swift, clearly under complete control. William retreated behind the mutant, a smug look on his face: "You think you've won, but I still have my trump card."
"Don't do this, William," Lynn persisted, trying to persuade him. "Do you really think this kind of violence will solve anything? You're digging your own grave!"
The mutant let out a low growl and charged at Lynn. Lynn quickly dodged, and the other team members immediately opened fire, but the mutant's skin seemed immune to ordinary bullets. He was incredibly fast, taking down one team member in just a few moves.
"Special ammunition!" Lynn shouted, as he switched to tranquilizer darts. The team followed his instructions, precisely targeting the mutant's joints and head.
The mutant, affected by the tranquilizer dart, began to move slowly but continued to struggle. Lynn seized the opportunity to approach and used a high-voltage electric grid to firmly bind him, eventually subduing him.
Seeing this, William tried to escape in the chaos, but Lynn stopped him. He pointed his gun at William's leg and said coldly, "Don't move, or I won't show any mercy."
William stopped, his composure finally vanishing, replaced by a hint of terror. He raised his hands and slowly said, "Fine, Lynn, you win. But do you know what? You didn't stop me, you stopped the hope of humanity's future."
Lynn did not respond, but simply handcuffed him to the wrists and then said into the communicator, "Target under control, core experimental facilities cleared, requesting support for evacuation."
With William under control, Lynn directed his team to quickly launch an operation. They had a clear division of labor: one group was responsible for ensuring the safe transfer of William and the enhanced mutant in uniform, while the other group began a comprehensive cleanup and destruction of the experimental base.
The core experimental equipment was located behind the control room, a large space filled with high-tech instruments. The machines were still running, and in the transparent culture chambers floated experimental subjects that were not yet fully developed, each appearing deformed and fragile. Lynn looked at these culture chambers, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. (End of Chapter)
