Chapter 7 The Name of the Wizard
Just then, Hughes and Mohr arrived at the deck entrance, where a group of apprentices, their clothes disheveled, rushed towards them, their faces filled with terror, and some of them had bright red blood on them.
Behind them lay a horrific slaughterhouse, while some harpies, having spotted the escaped, charged toward them with bone spears, laughing as they did so.
Hughes and Moore were stunned by the scene. They exchanged a glance and then rushed towards the wizard's residence. They used a space-expanding spell inside the airship to get from the rooftop to Logs and the other apprentices' room.
They ran swiftly down the corridor, the screams of apprentices and the shrieks of banshees ringing in their ears, but how could they possibly outrun the winged harpies?
Moore had disappeared without a trace, probably running downstairs or somewhere else, while Hughes firmly believed that only a wizard could solve this situation, and that they must know the spatial barrier had broken and were probably on their way here.
He ran to a large hall, and thanks to his physical prowess as a formal knight, he didn't expend much energy.
"call out"
A bone spear came hurtling from behind.
Sensing danger, Hughes quickly hid in front of a pillar. A bone spear struck the spot where Hughes had been standing. Taking a deep breath, Hughes swiftly turned and circled around the pillar, his gaze locking onto the approaching harpy.
He raised his left hand, on which he wore a ring inlaid with a red gemstone on his index finger, while his thumb lightly brushed against the runes below his finger.
The next moment, a fist-sized ball of fire shot out from in front of Hughes's hand and hurtled toward the harpy.
The harpy hadn't expected that the human who had been frantically fleeing from her pursuit possessed magical artifacts. The blazing fireball slammed into the harpy's chest.
"what!"
The harpy let out a pitiful cry; a large patch of feathers on her chest was charred, and several completely charred feathers fell to the ground.
"call out--"
Another shot landed, this time the fireball struck her left wing. The intense heat and pain from both attacks made it impossible for her to maintain flight, and she crashed heavily to the ground.
Xiu Duan drew the cross-shaped sword from his waist and seized the opportunity to rush towards the wounded banshee.
Sensing danger, the banshee struggled to grab Hughes's thigh, but Hughes swung his hand back and severed the banshee's left claw, revealing a clean cut.
Hughes stepped forward again, pointed the sword tip at the banshee's neck, gripped the hilt with both hands, and thrust it downwards.
"laugh--"
The sword tip pierced deep into her neck, blood splattering everywhere, staining the carpet crimson. The banshee's pupils lost focus, and she stopped breathing completely.
After confirming the banshee's death, Hughes drew his sword, turned, and fled. Two more banshees, having discovered their companion's death, abandoned their pursuit of the fleeing apprentice and charged toward Hughes.
Hughes dared not linger. The ring he had just used was a level zero magical artifact given to him by his father after his aptitude was tested at the age of 15. It could store the magic power of three magic stones.
One magic stone can emit five fire orbs. Although the ring was already filled with magic power, the pursuers this time were two strong banshees wielding bone spears. Hughes was not confident in his ability to fight them.
However, Hughes no longer needed to worry about the two harpies, as two huge purple vines emerged from the floor beneath them.
Two vines grew wildly and coiled upwards around the banshee, quickly wrapping around her ankles, then her calves, thighs, and finally her upper body.
The banshee struggled frantically, her bird claws clawing at the vines, but the purple vines oozed purple venom, which hissed as it touched the banshee's feathers and skin, causing her to scream in pain.
Their bodies were melted by the venom, leaving only two pairs of wings. A woman in a strapless dress walked over, glanced at Hughes, and then continued to fight the enemy.
Meanwhile, battles also broke out in various areas around the airship.
Some apprentices spontaneously organized to ambush the scattered banshees, while wizard apprentices rushed from the top floor to various locations to kill the banshees. After all, the academy had quotas, and it wouldn't be good if too many apprentices died.
Inside the restaurant, Rice held a golden bow, repeatedly drawing the bowstring taut, and arrows made of light elements shot towards the banshee, forming golden trails.
Meanwhile, his "Shadow Weavers" members were using enchanted weapons to restrain the banshee.
Valerie, meanwhile, held a necklace and cast a protective shield on the team members who were about to be attacked by the banshee. The apprentices struggled to buy time, waiting for the arrival of the wizard apprentices.
On the deck, only a few apprentices remained stubbornly holding the pit, while a person dressed in a black robe stood in the air—it was Logis, who had just come out of the laboratory.
His expression was indifferent, revealing neither joy nor anger; his icy blue eyes were filled with a blue light, and he was muttering to himself.
The next second, the surrounding magic gathered wildly, and a staff appeared in his hand. The blue crystal at the top of the staff, which was wrapped with two branches, emitted a bright light.
In an instant, the temperature around them plummeted, the moisture in the air condensed abruptly, and a biting cold swept over them. The banshees on the rooftop were frozen stiff, and icy blue frost flowers formed on their feathers.
These chilling energies did not harm the apprentices; they seemed to be alive, locking onto the female demon.
The next moment, strings of ice spikes appeared around Logs, and ice shuttles shot towards the banshee continuously. The ice shuttles kept condensing and erupting, as if venting the apprentices' anger.
Only the banshee's howls remained on the platform. Sharp icicles pierced the banshee's body, leaving holes in her wounds. Before the blood could flow, the wounds froze, and her body was slowly covered in ice. Her corpse fell to the ground and shattered into ice blocks.
The banshees perished in mere seconds. The surviving apprentices looked up at the power displayed by the fully-fledged wizards, their faces showing a longing for power, but even more so, a smile of relief at surviving a catastrophe.
As the storm subsided, everyone gradually regained their senses. Seeing their companions, who had been in class together just a few days ago, now turned into cold corpses, they realized the cruelty of the wizarding world.
Hughes observed the harpy he had killed. Harpies are oviparous monsters that hunt men every July, then cruelly kill and devour them after having sex with them.
However, most of the harpies in this area are led by their leader, Lyraz, who has signed contracts with the surrounding academies, prohibiting her from harming new recruits to the wizarding academies.
Hughes noticed that the banshee's pupils were unnaturally congested, but he didn't know why. Before he could investigate further, he was called to the assembly to count the number of casualties.
However, Logs seemed to realize something was amiss. After giving instructions to the wizard apprentice, he sent the alchemical puppet with several relatively intact corpses to study them.
Hughes pondered the situation he had just discovered in the crowd and also saw Moore. After talking with him, he learned that Moore had escaped to the restaurant and, together with Rice's team, had killed two harpies. After taking stock of everyone, they left on their own, and Hughes returned to his room.
