Chapter 343 He is Walter's Registered Hero
A deep sense of foreboding washed over her. Maggie unconsciously tightened her grip on Cathy's hand and hurried toward the interrogation room.
"Squeak—"
The interrogation room door was pushed open.
The two men inside turned their heads at the same time.
"Maggie?" Paxton asked, somewhat surprised. "What are you doing here? This isn't a place for you."
"Maggie..." Scott's lips trembled as he saw his ex-wife, as if he wanted to say something.
Maggie ignored Scott and looked at Paxton, asking, "What happened? Why is he here?"
Paxton sighed, walked over to Maggie, and whispered, "Armed home invasion. Last night on Millville Street. There was a gunfight, and his face was clearly captured on CCTV."
Maggie closed her eyes and swayed slightly.
"Scott..." She looked at Scott with utter disappointment in her eyes, "You...you actually went to steal again? A burglary, no less? Armed men? What kind of monster have you turned yourself into?!"
"I didn't participate in the armed robbery, Maggie! You have to believe me!" Scott pleaded urgently.
Maggie pulled Cathy behind her so she wouldn't see Scott's current state.
"Paxton is right, you're beyond saving. I'll never let you see Cathy again. I will never allow my daughter to have a robber as a father."
"No! Mom!"
Cathy, who was hiding behind Maggie, suddenly broke free from her mother's grasp.
The little girl's eyes were red, and large tears rolled down her cheeks. She bravely rushed to the metal table and tightly grasped Scott's handcuffed arms with her small hands.
"Daddy isn't a thief!" Cathy cried out. "Daddy's a superhero! You can't say that about him! You can't lock Daddy up!"
Looking at her daughter's tear-streaked face, and hearing that trusting "superhero."
Scott's heart felt as if it were being repeatedly cut by a rusty, dull knife, bleeding profusely.
Maggie stepped forward and forcefully pulled Cathy back to her side.
She stared coldly at Scott.
"I've told you before, Scott. I hope you can maintain that beautiful hero image in your daughter's eyes as much as possible. I've been trying to explain to her why you can't be by her side."
"Now, explain it to her yourself. Tell your daughter what kind of person you really are. Tell her why you're wearing handcuffs."
All eyes were on Scott, and Cathy looked at him with immense expectation and trust.
"Dad, tell them. You're going to fight bad guys, right? You're on a secret mission, right?"
Scott looked into his daughter's expectant eyes, his lips trembling.
He wanted to shout: Yes, Cathy! Daddy is a hero! Daddy even punched a bastard with a machine gun last night!
But how could he bring himself to say it?
Faced with irrefutable evidence and everyone's prejudices, uttering such absurd words only makes him look like a complete lunatic.
Scott forced a smile that looked more like a grimace, preparing to shatter his daughter's fairytale world with his own hands.
"Cathy, listen to Daddy. Actually, Daddy..." But Scott couldn't utter a sound.
"Let's go, Cathy. There are no superheroes here."
Just as Maggie was about to forcibly pull the crying Cathy out of the interrogation room.
"Knock knock knock!"
At that moment, a series of hurried and orderly footsteps suddenly came from the corridor outside the interrogation room.
"Hey gentlemen! You can't go into the interrogation room!" a police officer shouted, blocking their way.
"Get out of the way. I am a senior special agent from the legal department of the Water Corporation. This is a clearance order signed by the White House."
A dignified female voice rang out in the hallway outside the door.
Immediately afterwards, the interrogation room door was pushed open again.
The San Francisco Police Department's precinct chief followed behind, looking extremely nervous.
A group of four people walked in in front of the branch director.
Leading the group was a professionally dressed woman exuding an aura of sophistication. Behind her followed three burly, aloof men in black suits and sunglasses, resembling Schwarzenegger in stature.
Each of these individuals wore a "V" badge that gleamed with metallic luster on their chests.
That's the VGD (Voters Global Defense Agency) logo!
Paxton, Maggie, and even Scott in the interrogation room were all stunned for a moment.
Walter's men? What are they doing at the police station?
The female executive in charge swept her cold gaze across everyone in the interrogation room, finally fixing her gaze on Scott.
"Detective," the female executive said coldly, without room for negotiation, "I am the Executive Director of VGD's Legal Department."
"I am now officially representing Walter, demanding that you immediately release Mr. Scott Lang."
"Release him?" Paxton's eyes widened, as if he were listening to a fairy tale. "Ma'am, are you mistaken? He's a serious offender suspected of armed burglary! We have solid evidence!"
"Your evidence is bullshit."
She threw a stamped document directly in front of Paxton.
"Mr. Scott Lang is a registered superhero of VGD, in accordance with the Fifth Amendment to the Superhero Registration and Management Act and a special agreement between Vought Corporation and the federal government..."
"He is entitled to a Category A qualifying exemption!"
"San Francisco police have no right to detain or interrogate him. Remove his handcuffs now."
"Furthermore, the incident that occurred last night on Millville Street was part of a VGD-authorized operation by Mr. Lang to combat illegally armed mercenaries."
"He was fighting crime. And you arrested a hero as a criminal."
The moment those words were spoken, the entire interrogation room seemed to be put on pause.
"Wh...what?!"
Paxton stared at the document in disbelief.
Maggie covered her mouth, too shocked to utter a word.
Even Scott himself, sitting in the chair, was completely dumbfounded.
Am I a registered hero with VGD? When did I join VGD? How come I didn't know?!
"yeah--!!!"
A crisp cheer broke the silence.
Cathy happily broke free from Maggie's hand, jumping and skipping around with a bright smile on her face.
"I knew it! I knew it! My dad is a superhero! See! I told you so!" Cathy clapped her hands proudly and announced loudly to everyone.
Paxton still couldn't believe it. Although he was a police officer, he was actually a die-hard superhero fan in private.
He even has a complete set of limited edition Super Seven figurines at home, a total of six.
But...Scott?
Paxton looked Scott up and down suspiciously.
This man, whom he had despised countless times, this guy who could be pinned to the ground by two ordinary police officers.
How could he possibly be a member of that heroic group that maintains world peace?
