Lin Chuan and Wang Xu walked out of the classroom together. The exam was over, and it was time for dinner.

"How did the exam go?" Wang Xu asked.

Lin Chuan yawned. "If nothing unexpected happens, it should be alright."

"What do you mean by 'okay'?"

"For English, if you're unlucky, you'll get a little over 100, but if you're lucky, you can get a perfect score," Lin Chuan said.

"Huh? Old Lin, your English is so good?" Wang Xu was taken aback, clearly finding it hard to believe.

Of course, he thought it was most likely that his deskmate was talking nonsense. After all, the two had been deskmates for three years in junior high school, and this guy's grades had been very stable, consistently in the middle, neither high nor low, just like his own.

His middle school entrance exam scores seem to be a bit lower than mine, so how come he got a perfect score in English?

I can barely understand why I've matured since coming back from this summer vacation. What's wrong with me? Can I become smarter?

"Bullshit, just say it here," Wang Xu said.

"A late-night snack?" Lin Chuan raised an eyebrow. He wasn't trying to prove anything, but since it was his good classmate's late-night snack, he shouldn't miss the chance to get it.

"Are you serious?" Wang Xu asked, somewhat doubtful.

"Authenticity guaranteed".

"Alright, come on! Who's afraid of who?" Wang Xu also felt confident that his deskmate was genuine. The person who only asked him for textbooks a week before the start of the semester could now score over 110. Unless his deskmate was a genius.

"Besides English, what about the other subjects?" someone asked.

The two turned around and saw Chen Xiyu standing by the corridor, with Zhou Yun beside her.

Clearly, she overheard their conversation and noticed the problem, because Lin Chuan mentioned his English grades.

"Don't ask questions that are bad for our friendship," Lin Chuan said seriously.

"Hmph, you didn't do well in the other subjects, did you?" Chen Xiyu said.

"Just checking in," Lin Chuan coughed lightly, feigning concern, "How about Chen, the top student? How did your exam go?"

"If nothing unexpected happens, then it should be alright," Chen Xiyu mimicked his words, "first in the class, no problem."

"Wow? Chen Xueba, that's terrifying." Lin Chuan gave a thumbs up, he had no doubt about it, after all, this guy had been a good student since he was a child.

He certainly wouldn't bet with the other party; it would only take Wang Xu to fall for it.

"Shall we go eat?" Chen Xiyu asked.

Lin Chuan turned to his deskmate, "Shall we go?"

Wang Xu scratched his head awkwardly, "Well, Zhao Jiajia has something to ask me about."

Lin Chuan sighed, "Go ahead, go ahead, you womanizer who neglects your friends."

"Why does it feel so strange when you say this to me?" Wang Xu said.

He couldn't help but complain in his heart. He clearly only wanted to have dinner with one person, but this guy was either with Chen Xiyu or Cheng Xue. Who was the one who valued romance over friendship?

However, he was too embarrassed to say it in front of Chen Xiyu. He felt that although his brother valued women over friends, he should still save face for him.

Lin Chuan and the other two went to the cafeteria together, got their food, and found a corner seat to sit down.

He was eating his meal in peace when Zhou Yun, sitting diagonally across from him, seemed to have mustered up her courage and softly called out, "Class monitor."

Lin Chuan looked up at her. "Is something wrong?"

"Thank you for the chocolate during the training exercise," Zhou Yun said softly.

Lin Chuan thought it was something serious, but it had been so long ago. He waved his hand and said, "It's nothing. You've been calling me class monitor for a while now."

"Huh? The class monitor is really reliable." Chen Xiyu suddenly said, though her tone was a little strange.

"I'm reliable in everything I do," Lin Chuan shrugged.

"Does secretly buying a computer count?"

"Isn't it wrong to expose someone's past?"

In order to successfully use Chen Xiyu's Wi-Fi, Lin Chuan made a deal with her: as long as Lin Chuan's computer was with her, he would have to clean her house every week.

"I haven't neglected any of the work I was supposed to do. Are you questioning our partnership?" Lin Chuan's expression turned slightly serious.

"I didn't say anything." Chen Xiyu chuckled and turned to look at her deskmate. "Why are you eating so little?" Zhou Yun's dinner consisted of only cabbage, tofu, and rice, which didn't look appetizing at all.

Zhou Yun paused for a moment, "I've been... on a diet recently."

Upon hearing this, Lin Chuan exclaimed, "Girl, your excuse is even worse than Wang Xu's. With your slender figure, why would you want to lose weight?"

"You're not fat," Chen Xiyu said, putting several pieces of duck meat from her plate onto Zhou Yun's plate. "Eating some meat is good for your health."

"Thank you..." Zhou Yun seemed a little flattered.

After finishing their meal, Lin Chuan followed the two of them around the school for a while before finally returning to his classroom.

7:00 PM is also the time when the No. 1 Middle School in the city officially begins its evening self-study sessions.

Since he hadn't attended any classes today, Lin Chuan didn't know what to do during evening study.

Of course, those who can come to the No. 1 High School in the city are all good students. It is already the best public school in the city. Some students have already taken out the textbooks that were distributed before and started to preview the material. Wang Xu, on the other hand, was looking at the latest issue of "Zhiyin Comic".

Lin Chuan had nothing to do, so he looked at the high school textbook for a while, which he considered a simple preview.

There was no homework during evening study sessions, which made it quite boring. If it were before, he probably would have already sneaked out to an internet cafe.

Finally, at exactly 10:30 p.m., the school bell rang.

Lin Chuan tossed his already packed things into his schoolbag, said goodbye to his deskmate, and went to find Chen Xiyu at the front.

"I'm going back," Lin Chuan said.

Chen Xiyu, who was holding a book and reading, didn't look up. "Don't rush, let me finish reading these two pages."

"Stop looking, it's getting late. If we miss the last bus, we'll have to walk back," Lin Chuan reminded him.

Their evening self-study sessions at the No. 1 Middle School in the city already go late. If they are delayed any further and miss the last bus, it won't be fun, since it takes a little while to get from the classroom to the bus stop.

"Oh, okay," Chen Xiyu said.

She then remembered that she needed to sit back down and that they were both day students. She haphazardly stuffed her books into her bag, got up, and followed Lin Chuan out of the classroom.

"What book were you reading just now?" Lin Chuan asked.

"When I went to the library at noon, someone lent me 'Steppenwolf' to read," Chen Xiyu said.

"Hesse's books?" Lin Chuan asked, as he had read some of these well-known books.

"Hmm," Chen Xiyu said, "They even said they wanted to invite me to join the literary society."

"Literature Club? That sounds like a very artsy club. Are you suitable?" Lin Chuan asked.

"Of course," Chen Xiyu said, squinting. "Don't I look like a literary girl?"

Lin Chuan smiled without saying a word.

What are you laughing at?

"no."

"You're clearly laughing at me!" Chen Xiyu raised her hand and slapped his shoulder, but it didn't hurt.

"You're judging me with prejudice," Lin Chuan said, looking up at the somewhat hazy sky. "I just think the moonlight is beautiful tonight."

"Oh."

Even in the evening, there were still a few vehicles parked in front of the school gate. Since the evening study session at the No. 1 Middle School ends late, some parents are worried about their day school children, so they also come to pick them up and drop them off.

Streetlights illuminated the bus stop and both sides of the road, while the CBD skyscrapers in the distance remained brightly lit. Two people stood in front of the bus stop waiting for the bus, as cars drove by, their headlights flashing around their feet.

Chen Xiyu turned her head to look at both sides of the road, muttering to herself, "Why hasn't the last bus come yet!"

"Later, can I come to your house to use your computer?" Lin Chuan said. During evening study today, he was bored and reading a book when he suddenly had some ideas for a new book, so he planned to go to Chen Xiyu's room to finalize the beginning of his novel.

Sometimes inspiration for a novel comes just like that, or rather, the idea for something to write just like that.

"Um."

At that moment, a beam of light shone from the direction of the oncoming vehicle. Chen Xiyu squinted and saw the electronic display on the square front of the bus, which flashed the bus number "11".

"The car is here," Chen Xiyu said.

The two of them took the last bus home and arrived home in no time.

After returning to his room, Lin Chuan quickly took a shower in less than ten minutes, changed into clean clothes, and went next door.

He knocked gently on the door, as was his habit. Although in his eyes Chen Xiyu was just a little girl, she was still a girl after all.

After a while, a low voice came from inside the door, "I am Sweet Potato, please answer!"

Lin Chuan was stunned for a moment. This was their secret code from elementary school.

At that time, Chen Xiyu lived alone in the huge house, and sometimes she couldn't sleep at night because she was afraid.

When Lin Chuan found out, he volunteered to sneak over late at night and sleep on the sofa in her living room.

This way, Chen Xiyu would know that there are other people in the house besides her, and she wouldn't be so scared at night.

Of course, part of the reason Lin Chuan was so enthusiastic was that he felt that Chen Xiyu's sofa was much more comfortable to sleep on than his bed. Later, he found out that Chen Xiyu's sofas were all imported.

But it was a bit inconvenient to go to a girl's house alone late at night, so they agreed on this secret code.

In retrospect, the code was actually meaningless; even though there was a door between us, it wasn't like we couldn't hear each other's voices.

It's just that some people find it very interesting when they're young.

"I am a sweet potato, please answer!" Chen Xiyu repeated the sentence again.

Lin Chuan could only answer, "I am a potato."

A few seconds later, the door opened, and Chen Xiyu said mysteriously, "Come in quickly."

He acted like a thief, even though it was her house and he was just visiting from across the street.

Before leaving home, Lin Chuan told his mother that he was coming over to do some homework.

Although going to someone else's house to do homework in the middle of the night sounds unreliable.

But if Chen Xiyu acts as guarantor, then there's no problem. My mother probably trusts Chen Xiyu more than she trusts her own son.

If one day Chen Xiyu suddenly says that Lin Chuan is secretly dating and not studying, even if he is completely innocent, his mother probably won't believe him.

"I know you like sweet potatoes, but why am I a potato? I don't like potatoes." Lin Chuan had some doubts about the two people's code names.

"I like sweet potatoes, and I also like potatoes," Chen Xiyu said with a smile.

"I see." Lin Chuan understood. He sat down at his desk and opened his laptop.

Chen Xiyu continued to sit back on the sofa and play on her iPad. It seemed like an unspoken understanding between the two of them. When Lin Chuan was using the computer, she would never come over to peek. Sometimes she would just sit there quietly and play on her phone.

When he gets tired of playing, he'll lie down for a while, or call out to him a couple of times, and sometimes he'll go back to his room to sleep.

Around midnight, Chen Xiyu got up, yawned, and said, "I'm going back to my room to sleep."

"Okay," Lin Chuan said.

Chen Xiyu went back to his room, leaving him alone in the living room.

In the stillness of the night, Lin Chuan's thoughts raced, his fingers flying across the keyboard. Only when he typed the last word did he finally let out a long sigh of relief.

The first draft of my novel is finally finished...
