After being reborn, I gained a childhood sweetheart who appeared out of nowhere.
Chapter 50 Dubliners
Early in the morning, the sky was just beginning to lighten.
Zhou Yun sat up in bed, got out of bed, and pushed open the door. She found a hunched figure outside the yard sorting through the cardboard boxes that had been collected the day before.
"Grandpa," Zhou Yun called out.
"Xiaoyun, why are you up so early?" Grandpa turned around and looked at her.
"Yes, I'm going to the library today," Zhou Yun said.
"The library? It must be far away. Will you be back for lunch?"
"I guess I won't go back," Zhou Yun said uncertainly.
"Wait a minute," the old man said, sneaking into his room. After a while, he handed over a crumpled ten-yuan note. "Take this and go eat out."
"No need, I have money."
"Where did you get the money?"
"Yes, there really is. I'm not going to talk about it anymore, Grandpa. I'm going to brush my teeth and wash my face." Zhou Yun went into the bathroom, quickly washed up, and went back to her room to change her clothes.
In fact, she lived in a relatively remote town, two or three hours away from the city center. So when she registered, she forgot to submit the form and asked the teacher if she could submit it later.
So she was still hesitant last night and didn't really want to go to the provincial library, because going out would not only be a long way, but might also cost money.
But then I thought that if I went, I could see the class monitor, so I agreed.
Zhou Yun quickly changed her clothes, picked up an old mirror from the table, tidied her hair, and then went out.
…………
In an old residential area on the outskirts of the city, Lin Chuan knocked on Chen Xiyu's door. "Miss Chen, get up. Look at the time."
After about a minute, the door opened, and a sleepy-eyed girl came out. She rubbed her eyes and asked, "What time is it?"
"Eight o'clock," Lin Chuan said.
"Didn't we agree to meet at nine in the morning?" Chen Xiyu asked.
"It takes about forty minutes to get to the library from here, including waiting for the bus?" Lin Chuan said.
"That long?"
"Otherwise what?"
Chen Xiyu then jogged into the bathroom, quickly washed up, and went back to her room to change clothes.
Soon the door opened and Chen Xiyu came out. She was dressed very simply today: a white low-cut T-shirt, denim shorts, white sneakers with white socks, and a light blue backpack.
"I'm all better now, let's go," Chen Xiyu said.
After they went downstairs, they went straight to wait for the bus. Unfortunately, they were unlucky and waited for about ten minutes before a bus they were supposed to board finally came.
…………
Zhou Yun stood in front of the provincial library bus stop, clutching the shoulder strap of her backpack with one hand, turning her head to watch the passing vehicles.
After waiting for about ten minutes, a bus slowly stopped in front of her, and two people got off after the doors opened.
"I'm five minutes late," the boy said, looking at the girl next to him.
"It's your fault for not calling me sooner," the girl replied.
"Okay, it's still my problem." The boy grinned.
At this moment, both of them noticed her. The girl walked straight over and said, "Xiaoyun, I'm sorry, have you been waiting long?"
Zhou Yun waved her hand, "No, I just arrived too."
"Sorry, the wait for the bus has been a bit long," Lin Chuan said.
I glanced at her subconsciously. Zhou Yun was wearing a light gray T-shirt and faded jeans. Her long bangs covered her eyes, revealing only her straight nose and thin lips. She looked a bit like when she registered for school.
"It's okay, it's okay, it's really okay," Zhou Yun quickly waved her hand.
"Have you had breakfast?" Chen Xiyu asked.
"I ate." Zhou Yun nodded.
"Let's go then, let's go straight to the library," Chen Xiyu said, and the group walked together toward the library entrance.
Lin Chuan and his group walked into the provincial library through the main gate. In front of them was a large hall with a carved skylight in the center. Sunlight streamed through the skylight and shone on the smooth marble floor.
Further inside is the book display area, with floor-to-ceiling wooden bookshelves lining both sides of the walls. The air seems to carry a faint scholarly atmosphere. Next to it is the study area, with rows of long brown tables and wooden chairs with backs, arranged along the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Around nine o'clock in the morning, the library had just opened, but there were already quite a few people in the study area. There were young students in school uniforms and men in suits, with briefcases or laptops on their desks.
Lin Chuan casually found a seat by the window and sat down. Two girls happened to be sitting opposite her.
"If we're going to write book notes, we should first pick a few books that everyone likes," Lin Chuan said. "How about we each pick a few that we like and then discuss them together?"
"Okay." Chen Xiyu said, standing up and then taking Zhou Yun's hand to leave.
Lin Chuan was left alone, and he casually strolled around the bookshelves. The provincial library's floor-to-ceiling bookshelves contained not only world classics, but also many magazines and strange books.
I wandered around for a bit but didn't find any books that interested me. Instead, I saw a travel magazine with an interesting cover, so I picked it up and started reading for a while. Before I knew it, I was completely engrossed in it.
After looking at it for about ten minutes, Lin Chuan finally came to his senses and took a copy of "Dubliners" from the side to go back.
He had read this book before. It wasn't that he particularly liked it, but it seemed like a good choice for a literary society.
In the study area by the window, Chen Xiyu frowned slightly as she looked at the man across from her. He looked quite old, dressed in a suit and tie, with his hair neatly combed back.
"Are you two high school students or college students? What are you doing at the library on the weekend?" The man gave Chen Xiyu and Zhou Yun what he thought was a friendly smile.
"Do we know each other?" Chen Xiyu replied casually.
"Even if we don't know each other, we can still get to know each other. It just seems like kids these days are really hardworking, coming to study on weekends too?" The man sat in the seat that originally belonged to Lin Chuan.
Chen Xiyu simply did not answer him.
"I didn't mean anything by it. I also quite enjoy reading. What books are you reading? Maybe I've read them too." The man said, leaning forward slightly, as if to get closer to look at the books on their table.
The next moment, his view was suddenly blocked by a copy of "Dubliners".
The man looked up in surprise and found a boy standing next to him.
"Friend, this is a library. If you want to chat, you can go somewhere else," the boy said casually.
The man sized the man up; he was wearing a white short-sleeved shirt and gray cropped pants, and looked quite young. "Are you the administrator?"
"No," Lin Chuan replied.
"What's it to you?" the man frowned.
"I'm not a librarian, but I can call for one," Lin Chuan said, turning to the two girls beside him. "Sorry, I was just looking at a magazine and lost track of time."
The man then realized that Lin Chuan knew both girls. He coughed lightly and said casually, "I just saw two classmates reading here and was curious about what they were reading, so I came over to chat."
"Let's chat at the market, this is the library." Lin Chuan repeated this sentence, smiling and raising his hand in a gesture of invitation.
The man was instantly enraged. The other person didn't look very old; how dare he speak to him like that? He stood up abruptly.
Only after he stood up did he realize that the boy opposite him was about the same height as him.
When he glared at the other person, the boy didn't back down at all. His face was expressionless, but his dark eyes carried a hint of indifference. He was just a little boy, but he gave people a strange sense of pressure.
After staring at each other for a moment, the man looked away first, muttered under his breath, "Damn, kids these days really don't know any manners..." before turning and leaving.
Lin Chuan sat down and looked at the two people opposite him. "That guy didn't do anything, did he?"
"No," Zhou Yun said softly.
Chen Xiyu snorted, "At your age, still trying to hit on high school students, what kind of person is that?"
Lin Chuan had a sense of déjà vu, as if he had been accidentally injured.
"What books did you find?" He changed the subject.
Chen Xiyu pushed over several books they had found, including well-known works such as "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Snow Country," as well as lesser-known titles like "Moby-Dick" and "The Shadow Thief."
"Why did you only take one book?" Chen Xiyu asked, looking at the book in his hand.
"It's not about having a lot of these things," Lin Chuan said. "How about the three of us each choose a book we like, write a simple beginning, and then pick a better one?"
"it is good."
"Um."
After that, the three of them took out their notebooks, placed their favorite books next to them, and began reading and taking notes. While Chen Xiyu was writing, she didn't forget to look at Lin Chuan's notebook, saying, "How did you write? Let me see."
Zhou Yun wasn't very good at writing this kind of thing either. In the junior high school in her small town, the teachers wouldn't let her write these kinds of things either, so she could only look at "Snow Country" in her hands, but didn't know what to write.
She finally managed to write a few hundred words. After hesitating for a moment, she looked up at Lin Chuan sitting opposite her and softly called out, "Class monitor."
"Hmm?" Lin Chuan looked up.
"I've written a little bit. Can you take a look and see if it's okay?" Zhou Yun asked softly.
"Okay." Lin Chuan took her notebook and began to read.
Zhou Yun pursed her lips, while looking at the boy at the opposite table through her bangs.
Lin Chuan leaned back in his chair, looking down at his book. The sunlight streaming through the French windows illuminated half of his body, making his face appear exceptionally fair and clear.
Time seemed to slow down at that moment, and Zhou Yun could hear her own heartbeat. Lin Chuan quickly finished reading the few hundred words, and when he put the notebook down, Zhou Yun quickly looked away.
"It's well written," Lin Chuan said. "However, reading notes are mainly for recording your thoughts. You can't just copy down the original text. You can write down some personal insights or something."
"Oh, okay, thank you, class monitor." Zhou Yun took her notebook and continued writing.
"Let me see yours too," Chen Xiyu said, joining in.
"Oh, okay." Zhou Yun quickly handed over her notebook.
In less than half an hour, Lin Chuan finished writing his reading notes. This kind of thing was quite simple for him. Although he had never written one before, he could just find a framework online and fill it in.
This is the gap between him and high school students, stemming from his learning and thinking abilities.
"I've finished writing, what about you guys?" Lin Chuan asked.
"Huh? So fast? Let's see!" Chen Xiyu said.
Lin Chuan handed over his notebook, and the first thing Chen Xiyu said after taking it was, "Your handwriting is a bit ugly."
"Hey, just look at the content," Lin Chuan reminded him.
The two girls looked at his notes for a while before Chen Xiyu finally looked up and said, "Not bad."
"Class monitor, this is really well written," Zhou Yun said.
"Looking at it this way, let's use yours," Chen Xiyu said.
"And yours?" Lin Chuan asked.
"Hey, it's not as good as yours." Chen Xiyu handed it over with a grin. Lin Chuan glanced at it and found that it was indeed written in a somewhat rambling style, like an essay, which was very much in line with the feeling of a high school student's first attempt at writing something like this.
However, to be fair, this girl's handwriting is indeed very beautiful. It's obvious that she has practiced it regularly. Lin Chuan must have watched her practice before.
Back in elementary school, Chen Xiyu wasn't as outgoing as she is now. After school, she had nothing to do but do her homework and practice calligraphy.
"Zhou Yun, how's your writing going?" Lin Chuan asked.
"I can't write either," Zhou Yun said, stuffing her newly revised work into her bag. After reading Lin Chuan's, she felt even more that her own writing was strange and a mess.
After a brief discussion, we ultimately decided to use Lin Chuan's.
"After you've finished reading, feel free to share your thoughts," Lin Chuan asked. Although he had chosen his own work, he wanted to brainstorm ideas since it was a group project.
"I think your opening could be summarized in one sentence." Chen Xiyu stroked her chin as if...
Are you serious?
"hey-hey."
The group spent about an hour working on this version, although they spent most of the time chatting and joking.
But we've accomplished the literary society's task. It was just a club task, not something to submit to books or magazines, so there's no need to be so serious about it.
Lin Chuan glanced at the time on his phone; it was almost noon. Many of the people reading nearby were getting up to leave, as they were all heading out for lunch. Studying was good, but people still needed to eat.
"It's almost noon, shall we go eat?" Lin Chuan asked.
"Okay, okay," Chen Xiyu said, "I've been starving for ages."
"You guys go ahead, I won't go," Zhou Yun said softly.
Why?
"I have something to do, so I have to go back first," Zhou Yun said. Actually, she had brought a sweet potato with her, intending to have it for lunch, but she was too embarrassed to say it out loud.
"Since we're already here, let's have some food before we go back," Chen Xiyu said. "Come on, let's go eat. It's on me."
"No need," Zhou Yun said abruptly, waving her hand.
"You brought me breakfast last time, and I offered you money, but you wouldn't take it. Now I'm asking you to come back this time." Without waiting for a reply, Chen Xiyu grabbed Zhou Yun's arm and pulled her outside.
Lin Chuan followed behind the two, not forgetting to ask, "Miss Chen, am I entitled to a share of this treat?"
"I'm in a good mood today, so you can treat me to a meal too."
"Miss Chen is very generous."
"What do you want to eat?" Chen Xiyu asked from behind the library.
Zhou Yun stood there, somewhat at a loss.
"If you're not picky, shall we go for pizza? KFC? Or..." Chen Xiyu asked, waving her finger.
"That one," Zhou Yun suggested, pointing to a nearby store because she felt the place Chen Xiyu mentioned must be quite expensive.
Lin Chuan glanced at it and realized it was the legendary "Shaxian Grand Hotel?"
Chen Xiyu didn't insist, and the three of them had lunch together at Shaxian Hotel at noon.
Lin Chuan and Chen Xiyu said goodbye to Zhou Yun at the station, and the two of them did not linger outside, but went back together.
Chen Xiyu went back to her room saying she was going to take a nap, while Lin Chuan sat at his computer desk, making final revisions to his morning reading notes.
He didn't go out for the rest of the weekend, spending his days writing and doing the homework assigned by his teacher... just like a proper high school student.
