Monday, August 2009, 9.

The first class of the morning finally ended when the English teacher said "get out of class dismissed."

Lin Chuan took out the steamed buns from the drawer and prepared to eat breakfast.

He arrived at the classroom right on time, so he started reading aloud as soon as he got there and didn't have a chance to eat breakfast.

Lin Chuan waited anxiously until the morning reading session ended, but then Lao Xue went straight in and rambled on and on until the English teacher arrived. As a result, Lin Chuan had to endure one morning reading session and one English class.

The steamed buns were piping hot when I bought them, but now they're a bit cold, and water droplets have condensed on the white packaging bag.

He tore open the packaging and was just about to eat when someone shouted.

"Class monitor, someone's looking for you," the boy sitting by the door called out.

Lin Chuan clicked his tongue. What day is it today? What's wrong with people? Can't they even have breakfast?

"A senior high school girl is looking for you!" the boy added, as if on purpose.

As expected, as soon as the keyword was mentioned, many people in the class turned their attention to it, and even Wang Xu, who was lying down, raised his head.

"Huh? Old Lin, how come you're hooking up with a senior again?" he blurted out, directly asking what the other boys were thinking.

Lin Chuan raised his hand and pressed his head back down, saying, "Go to sleep."

He stood up and casually pulled a notebook from a pile of textbooks on the table. It was their weekend reading notebook, and Lin Chuan could easily guess who the senior student who came to see him was.

However, he still took his own steamed buns and left the classroom, determined not to disturb him from eating breakfast, no matter who came looking for him.

As soon as Lin Chuan stepped out of the classroom, he spotted Sun Yan immediately.

"Senior, is something the matter?" Lin Chuan took a bite of the steamed bun, remarking on how drastically the taste changed after it cooled down.

"You're only having breakfast now?" Sun Yan asked.

"I was studying so hard that I forgot to eat," Lin Chuan said.

"I didn't expect you to work so hard, junior," Sun Yan said. "I'm here to tell you about a student council announcement."

"Why wasn't the notification posted in the group chat?" Lin Chuan asked. Their student union also had its own large group chat, as well as a smaller group chat for the organization department.

"I mentioned it in the group chat, but you didn't reply. I just went to deliver some materials to the teacher, so I stopped by to check on things," Sun Yan said.

"What's up?" Lin Chuan asked. He hadn't used his phone today, so he hadn't seen the group chat.

"Our student union is having a small meeting tonight. It's more like a small welcome party for you new members. It'll be during the last evening study session at the student activity center," Sun Yan said.

"The last evening study session?" Lin Chuan asked. "Skipping class?"

"Don't worry, I've already told your teacher on duty. Just come directly when the time comes," Sun Yan said, glancing towards the classroom. "Aren't there two members from the discipline department in your class? They haven't joined the group yet. Could you tell them later?"

Sun Yan was referring to Cheng Xue and Liu Hao, both of whom passed the student council interview.

Cheng Xue was already very good, excelling in both character and academics, and on top of that, she was beautiful, so there was no reason for the student council not to accept her.

As for Liu Hao, although he has many ulterior motives, he served as the class monitor in junior high school for three years and his grades were decent, so he has some experience that allows him to barely stand out among a group of freshmen.

"Okay, I understand." Lin Chuan said, handing over the notebook in his hand. "This is the reading notes the literary club needs, and our group has finished writing ours."

"You've finished writing it? So fast?" Sun Yan asked.

"How much time can it take to write a book note?" Lin Chuan asked.

"Okay, I'll take your three reading notes," Sun Yan said, taking the notes. "I'm going back to class now, bye-bye."

"goodbye."

Lin Chuan had just turned to go back to the classroom when the boy in the first row who had helped him shout looked at him with a smile, "Class monitor, you're amazing! Even the senior girls are looking for you."

"Hey, you underestimate the class monitor's charm, don't you? She's got everyone!" another boy said with a laugh.

"It seems like you two are thinking of doing chores on Fridays?" Lin Chuan said with a smile.

"We were wrong, we were wrong, class monitor!" the two quickly said.

Lin Chuan turned his head and looked around, but couldn't find Liu Hao. Instead, Cheng Xue was sitting there reading a book by herself. Although her deskmate was Zhao Jiajia, a talkative homebody, she was alone most of the time.

He walked over and called out, "Cheng Xue, the student council is having a welcome party during the last study session tonight at the club activity center. You can check the group for details. If you haven't joined the group, I'll send it to you later."

Cheng Xue looked up at him and nodded.

Lin Chuan didn't intend to chat any longer and turned to leave, but he seemed to hear a very faint "thank you" behind him.

Back in his seat, Lin Chuan took out his phone. Not seeing Liu Hao, he casually sent him a text message as a notification, indicating that if Liu Hao couldn't come, it would be his problem.

Daytime classes were as usual; most of the time at the No. 1 Middle School was quite boring, and with the teachers speaking so fast, time flew by.

The second evening study session ended, and Lin Chuan began packing his things.

"Hey, Lao Lin, what are you doing?" Wang Xu asked his deskmate with some curiosity.

"The student council is having a welcome party, let's go now."

"Isn't class in session now?"

"I've already spoken to the teacher."

"Wow, bureaucracy, you student council!" Wang Xu exclaimed indignantly. Their anime club's welcome party was just a bunch of people buying snacks and sitting in a circle chatting after school in the afternoon.

The student council simply took up class time, and the teacher even agreed.

"I asked you to come, but you didn't," Lin Chuan said, then picked up his backpack and stood up.

Instead of walking directly, he went to the podium, where the math teacher on duty that day was sitting. "Teacher, I need to go to the student activity center now."

"Okay, I know, you go ahead." The math teacher nodded, then looked behind Lin Chuan, "You all go ahead."

Lin Chuan turned around and found that Cheng Xue had also been standing behind him at some point, and had even said "Thank you" to the teacher.

Liu Hao, who had originally planned to leave, also hurriedly ran over to say hello.

The three of them walked out of the classroom together. Lin Chuan walked in front, followed by Cheng Xue and Liu Hao. The distance between them was neither too far nor too close, but none of them took the initiative to speak to each other.

We soon arrived at the student activity center. The building was lit up at night, and several colorful balloons were hanging at the entrance, making it look like a welcome party.

Sun Yan stood under the eaves with his hands behind his back and soon saw the three people.

She waved and greeted them, "Hi, hi, hi, you're here!"

"Senior," Lin Chuan called out.

Cheng Xue and Liu Hao were somewhat confused because neither of them had ever met Sun Yan before and did not know who the person in front of them was, since the person who interviewed them was Lin Chuan.

"Let me introduce myself. I am Sun Yan, the head of your Discipline Inspection Department," Sun Yan said.

"Hello, Minister," Liu Hao said quickly.

Sun Yan waved her hand, "No need to call me Minister, just call me Senior Sister."

"Hello, senior." Cheng Xue greeted her. She was usually very polite, except when she was a little cold towards Lin Chuan.

Sun Yan looked at the other two and said, "I did have something to do on the day of the interview, so I had to ask Lin Chuan to come instead. But I also considered many things. After all, you are in the same class, so you should know each other quite well and have a good relationship."

The moment those words were spoken, the atmosphere became a little strange. The phrase "good relationship" shouldn't even apply to the three of them.

Sun Yan also sensed that the atmosphere was a bit strange, and looked left and right.

"Senior, it's a bit cold outside, why don't you come in?" Lin Chuan reminded her.

Sun Yan led a few people inside.

"Senior, is this welcome party held every year?" Liu Hao asked, wanting to make a good impression since it was his first time meeting the department head.

"Hmm," Sun Yan said, "Do you really think it's okay to take up class time like this, since we're the No. 1 High School in the city?"

"Huh? No..."

Sun Yan smiled and said, "Actually, our school has a very open-minded attitude towards learning and activities. Every time the principal raises the flag, he shouts the slogan of all-round development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor. So our New Year's Eve party and school sports meet are quite lively. You will see when the time comes."

Following Sun Yan, they arrived at the door of a room, which had no nameplate.

Sun Yan pushed open the wooden door, but instead of an office, she found herself in a spacious classroom with two rows of desks arranged inside.

There were also many snacks and fruits such as oranges on the table. The freshmen who had passed the interview were all there, and they gathered in twos and threes to get to know each other and chat.

Although most people are not in the same department, the high school student council is not actually divided into such small groups, since each department doesn't have many people to begin with.

Sometimes, especially the discipline inspection department, has the most work on weekdays, since they often have to check on morning reading and whether students are late.

At this time, they would also call on the organization department to work together. For example, when there was a school event, it was said that the organization department would organize it, but in reality, the entire student union would participate.

"Welcome to the welcome party!" Sun Yan said with a smile.

"Thank you, senior." Liu Hao readily agreed.

Lin Chuan echoed this sentiment, then quickly found a quiet spot where the table was filled with the most snacks.

He wasn't really interested in this so-called welcome party, so these snacks were probably more appealing to him. He was quite content to sit in a corner and secretly eat something by himself.

At the front of the classroom, Chu Wenle stood up. "Good evening, everyone. My name is Chu Wenle, and I am the current president of the student council. On behalf of the student council, I welcome you to join this big family."

A round of applause broke out. Although many people were meeting the chairman for the first time, they gave him a lot of face.

After the heads of the other departments stood up and introduced themselves, followed by a fairly common opening speech, it was time for the new employees to introduce themselves.

Starting with the newcomer on the far left, everyone stood up one by one to introduce themselves.

Those who pass the student council interview are at least not too introverted, and everyone gives a good self-introduction. Some people even add some funny jokes to their self-introductions to liven up the atmosphere and leave an impression on others.

Lin Chuan peeled an orange in his hand, listening intently. When the third boy stood up, he smiled.

"Hello everyone, I am Xiao Yu from Class 1, Grade 1. I am very happy to join the Student Council family. I hope we can learn, grow and progress together in the future."

Their eyes met for a fleeting moment, and Xiao Yu smiled at Lin Chuan.

When it was finally Lin Chuan's turn, he simply stood up and said, "Hello everyone, I am Lin Chuan from Class 5 of Grade 11. Thank you."

With just that one sentence, Lin Chuan sat down, the simplest of all, which ironically attracted the attention of many.

After the self-introductions, it was time for free activities. It was essentially a welcome party, not a performance, so there was no need to be so reserved. Xiao Yu, holding a glass of juice, started chatting with the department heads.

It's like Lin Chuan attending a company annual meeting and going around toasting the leaders.

"You're a freshman?" a girl next to me said.

Lin Chuan turned his head and saw that, at some point, the guy next to him had turned into a short-haired girl.

He still remembered this person. The first girl he interviewed with Sun Yan that day was named Tang Xiaoying. She must have passed the disciplinary inspection interview to be able to come here.

"Yeah, I'm a freshman just like you guys," Lin Chuan said while eating an orange.

Tang Xiaoying smiled and said, "I thought you were joking."

Why?

Tang Xiaoying thought for a moment and said, "Because when I saw you sitting there that day, you seemed to have such an imposing presence or something, I thought you were some kind of minister or chairman."

"Don't tell anyone what you just said."

"Why?" Tang Xiaoying asked innocently.

"Because the minister heard this, he thought I was plotting to seize power, and who knows, he might make me clean toilets tomorrow," Lin Chuan said.

Tang Xiaoying was stunned for a moment before she remembered. She quickly covered her mouth and said, "I'm sorry, I definitely won't tell anyone."

"Thank you," Lin Chuan said.

After the welcome party, there were simple performances, which were no different from a regular class reunion. At first, everyone was too shy to perform their talents.

It wasn't until the head of the academic department went up and sang a short song using the classroom's decent microphone that everyone started to get lively.

Unlike the lively scene over there, Lin Chuan was looking down at his phone, or more accurately, replying to messages.

"You're still using your phone in class?" he asked.

"I'm not outside," the other party replied.

"You skipped evening study?"

"I told the teacher that my stomach was upset, and then I left."

"Does your stomach really hurt?"

"It's definitely fake."

"You're the top student in our class, and Lao Xue's most valued student. Lao Xue will be disappointed if he finds out," Lin Chuan reminded him.

"Just don't let the teacher know," the other person replied with a grinning emoji, then asked, "What are you doing at the activity center?"

"It's so boring, just chatting and singing," Lin Chuan said. "But the snacks are pretty good, there are oranges, chocolates, and rice crackers."

"I want to eat."

"Isn't this inconvenient?"

The other party replied with an angry emoji.

Lin Chuan could only reply with an OK emoji, "Are you alone now?"

"Yeah, just wandering around the school."

"Lin Chuan, aren't you going to sing a song?" He suddenly heard someone call out to him.

Lin Chuan, who was playing on his phone, looked up in confusion at Sun Yan sitting at the front and at everyone's gaze. "What are we here for?"

"Sing a song? Aren't you a very good singer?" Sun Yan said.

"I'm not very good at it," Lin Chuan politely declined.

Sun Yan smiled. "Didn't we sing 'Sunny Day' quite well during military training?"

After he said that, many of the freshmen looked over. Although the military training was tough, many of them still missed it after it ended.

They also remembered that on that slightly cool night, someone created a song called "Sunny Day," which was really beautiful. During the days of military training, everyone was talking about that.

Except for one or two classes near Class 5, most students in other classes only heard his music but never saw him. They never expected that the person involved was in their student council.

Lin Chuan smiled and said, "That's because my singing partner sang well, and I was just an extra."

Although several freshmen wanted Lin Chuan to sing a song, he politely declined, as he didn't want to showcase his singing talent in the student council.

"That's a pity," Sun Yan said. "I hope to see you and Xiaoyu perform at the New Year's Eve gala."

Lin Chuan smiled but didn't say anything, and everyone continued playing music and chatting.

He made sure no one was paying attention to him, stuffed two oranges and some chocolate cookies into his pocket, then pretended to go to the restroom and left the office from the back.

As soon as he stepped out the door, he was blocked by Sun Yan again.

"Junior, are you leaving already?" Sun Yan asked, noticing that he had even picked up his backpack.

"It's almost time, so I was thinking of going back as soon as possible," Lin Chuan said.

"Oh, I see. I've already looked at those application forms you helped me with last time. They were very well written. How about I treat you to a late-night snack as a thank you?" Sun Yan said.

"No, thank you," Lin Chuan refused decisively. "I'm afraid you'll assign me more work."

"Hahaha, do you think I'm that kind of person?" Sun Yan laughed.

"I want to say no, but it's hard to say it out loud," Lin Chuan said with a smile. "Senior, if there's nothing else, I'll be going now?"

"Alright," Sun Yan said. "We were originally going to wait until it was over, and what you did wasn't good, but since you helped with the interview before, I'll pretend I didn't see it."
