Alaska Gold Rush Diary

Chapter 36 A Blessing in Disguise

Back at the camp, Zhou Xin didn't rush to get the medicine, but instead instructed Logan to put the dead snake on the ground.

Then he took out his phone and used an image search app to identify the species of the snake.

He soon learned that the snake was a brown krait, a highly venomous species!

This is also one of the most widespread and common venomous snakes in Australia.

Zhou Xin had already prepared antivenom serum for these snakes.

He immediately found the refrigerated antivenom for the brown ibex in the freezer, slung his first-aid kit over his shoulder, and ran toward Edward without stopping.

When he arrived, the swelling on Edward's thigh had increased significantly, demonstrating the snake's potent venom.

Without further delay, Zhou Xin immediately took out the antitoxin serum and carefully injected it into Logan's arm vein.

Although his technique wasn't perfect, he managed to complete the injection successfully.

Throughout the entire process, Zhou Xin was methodical and handled things very decisively and quickly.

The interval between Edward being bitten and receiving the antivenom serum was no more than thirty minutes.

In this way, Edward should be out of danger.

Zhou Xin worked tirelessly, taking out relevant items from the first-aid kit to clean, disinfect, and bandage Edward's wounds.

Only then did he breathe a sigh of relief.

"It should be fine now. I'll help you back to camp. You should get some rest today."

As Zhou Xin spoke, he helped Edward up and slowly walked towards the camp.

Edward looked apologetic: "I'm sorry, Sin, I'm going to delay the gold mining progress."

"Don't say that. Nobody wants this to happen, and I know that being bitten by a venomous snake is extremely painful. You're going to suffer a lot today."

Although antivenom serum was injected, the toxins were not eliminated so quickly.

His thigh may remain swollen for several days, and he may also experience complications such as increased heart rate and muscle pain.

Edward feigned a heartbroken expression: "The most painful thing is my soul. There is nothing more painful than looking at gold in the ground but not being able to dig it up."

"Looks like this guy should be alright now," Zhou Xin thought to himself.

The sun had just risen.

Edward needs at least one or two days of rest, and his actions will be affected for at least a week, which will naturally reduce his gold mining efficiency.

Zhou Xin could tell that Edward felt extremely guilty, but since what had happened was already done, all they could do was face it.

From now on, Zhou Xin will have to dig for gold all by himself.

After this incident, Zhou Xin became more cautious. If he were bitten by a snake again, his gold-hunting trip would have to end prematurely.

Before heading to the next location, he would instruct Logan to thoroughly inspect that area in advance.

Although wolves' sense of smell is not as good as dogs', it is still much more sensitive than humans'.

Snakes generally have a strong odor, so Logan was perfectly capable of handling the investigation.

……

Although Zhou Xin was reluctant to say it, feeling somewhat sorry for Edward, it seemed that being bitten by the snake had indeed brought him good luck.

Around noon, he unearthed two pieces of gold the size of a fingernail, estimated to weigh a total of 20 grams.

Moreover, just as he was about to insist on digging one more spot and then go back, as a large rock on the surface was lifted, he smelled an extremely strong scent of gold.

He immediately realized that this was a huge shipment, a shipment bigger than all the gains of the past two days!

The sound of the detector, louder than ever before, confirmed his judgment.

Although he has already collected more than 100 ounces of gold since he started panning for it, he is still excited and thrilled.

He swung his pickaxe, digging hard into the pit.

It was already very hot, but he didn't feel it at all.

As the pit was dug deeper, the smell at the tip of the nose became stronger and stronger.

Suddenly, a piece of gold the size of a child's palm was turned up by the pickaxe.

Although the surface was covered with a lot of dust, large patches of golden yellow were still visible.

There's no need for a detector, because this piece of gold is so big that even dust can't cover its brilliance.

Gold nugget!

Zhou Xin held the gold in his hand and examined it carefully.

The surface of the gold is uneven and its shape is also strange, not at all like a dog's head.

A rough estimate suggests that this gold nugget weighs no less than 5 ounces.

Zhou Xin held the gold nugget in his hand and finally burst into laughter.

"I'm sorry, Edward, but if these two things are really related, I don't mind if you get bitten by a few more snakes."

He walked happily towards the campsite, carrying with him a morning full of good news.

Back at the camp, Edward, who was lying on the moon chair playing on his phone out of boredom, immediately sat up when he saw Zhou Xin return.

"Xin, you're finally back. I've already prepared lunch, but you're only coming back now. Looks like you've discovered the fun of gold mining too."

He had spent a lot of time digging up that nugget, and it was now close to one o'clock in the afternoon.

Then, Edward noticed the barely suppressed smile on Zhou Xin's face.

"What's wrong? You look very happy."

Zhou Xin laughed and said, "You can't imagine how much gold I dug up today."

"How big? Could it be bigger than the first one I dug up yesterday?"

Zhou Xin looked at him with a smile: "Hold out your hand."

Edward stretched out his right hand with a mixture of doubt and anticipation.

Snapped!

Zhou Xin forcefully slapped the gold nugget he was holding into Edward's hand.

Edward's palm sank, and then he saw what was in his hand.

He stared wide-eyed, stunned for a second, then his face lit up with barely suppressed excitement.

"My God, you've dug up such a huge piece of gold!"

He picked up the gold nugget and examined it repeatedly, his expression anything but calm.

Zhou Xin took out a scale and placed the gold nugget on it.

6.3 ounces!

"I really wish I could get better right away, it's making me so anxious," Edward sighed.

After packing up the gold, Zhou Xin went to the dining area to see what lunch Edward had prepared for him.

Soon, unsurprisingly, he frowned.

"I'm sorry, I don't have your cooking skills. I could only make some simple dishes that I usually eat. I just ate some, and they tasted pretty good."

Zhou Xin picked up the plate and looked at the food that Edward thought tasted pretty good, then fell silent.

On the plate were two pieces of chicken covered in sweet salad dressing, a small pile of tortilla chips, and a slice of toast.

Knowing that Edward had dragged his disabled legs and struggled to make this lunch, Zhou Xin couldn't bear to refuse his kindness.

"It looks pretty good," he said against his will.

He had only eaten a packet of instant noodles in the morning, and by this time he was starving.

This chicken might not look very appealing, but maybe it tastes good? He comforted himself.

Then, he picked up a piece of chicken with his fork, put it to his mouth, and took a bite.

The next moment, he controlled the twitching of his facial muscles and swallowed the chicken with barely any chewing.

It's tough and fishy; even Logan probably wouldn't eat it.

"You need to rest well and get better quickly, so don't force yourself to cook anymore."

Zhou Xin swallowed the chicken like it was medicine, and said with a smile.
