Dragon Raja: Lu Mingfei's War Journey
Chapter 5 Guns and the Coming of Night
After moving for a short while, the feeling of difficulty breathing and headache returned. Lu Mingfei had to sit down and breathe heavily, feeling as if a heavy stone was pressing on his chest. Just then, he heard a weak voice coming from the cockpit.
"Water...please give me some water..."
Lu Mingfei began walking towards the cockpit, and then saw the two pilots who were almost completely crushed. The co-pilot was almost completely unconscious and kept muttering "water".
Lu Mingfei grabbed a handful of snow from the broken part of the cockpit and fed it to the co-pilot. Seemingly stimulated by the snow, the co-pilot regained some consciousness.
The co-pilot weakly raised his head and said to Lu Mingfei in a barely audible voice, "Give me my bag......"
Lu Mingfei began searching around him and soon found a small olive-colored cloth bag. He opened the bag and found a gleaming revolver inside, along with six bright yellow bullets neatly arranged beside it.
He suddenly looked up at the co-pilot, and then met the co-pilot's pleading eyes. Lu Mingfei immediately understood what he meant.
The co-pilot is a soldier, and this is a military aircraft. In an emergency, the pilot can use a pistol for self-defense or... commit suicide.
But now that the co-pilot is no longer able to hold the gun, it's obvious who should fire it.
With trembling hands, Lu Mingfei loaded the bullet and then raised his pistol to aim at the co-pilot. However, he found that his hands were shaking so much that he couldn't pull the trigger no matter what he did. Especially when he met those pleading eyes filled with tears, it put him under tremendous pressure.
In the end, Lu Mingfei put down his gun. He couldn't do it. He couldn't bring himself to shoot and kill another person, even if that person begged him to.
His education didn't allow him to do it, and he didn't have the courage to. He was just a loser who liked to stay home reading comics and novels and go to internet cafes to play StarCraft with other people. He couldn't bring himself to kill someone.
"Don't worry, we have doctors here... and a rescue team will definitely come when something like this happens... You have to hang in there..." Lu Mingfei stammered as he comforted him.
But the co-pilot's eyes had changed from pleading to utter despair. Lu Mingfei didn't dare to meet those desperate eyes. He turned his head away, wanting to leave the cockpit.
However, before leaving the cockpit, he hid the fully loaded revolver. Who knew if it might be useful later? Even if he didn't use it, he couldn't let anyone else get it. It was a gun, after all, something with absolute deterrent power.
Lu Mingfei returned to the cabin and joined the team moving the twisted seats. It wasn't long before it got dark.
The plane crashed at approximately 3 PM, and by 6 PM, the sky had darkened at an alarming rate, and the temperature had dropped sharply.
However, Lu Mingfei and his team only managed to clear a small area inside the cabin during this period.
"It's no use, it's completely dark, we can't see anything!" someone shouted from outside. Without lighting, they had no way to continue working.
Ultimately, they could only move all the wounded back into the cabin and prioritize their placement on the cleared area. However, this area, located where the aircraft was damaged, offered no protection from the cold wind.
To ward off the cold wind as much as possible, Lu Mingfei and the others piled up all the suitcases and twisted seat cushions they could find at the broken hole, barely managing to build a wall.
Lu Mingfei huddled against the newly erected wall, his body trembling. The wind outside was so strong that someone had to sit behind the wall to support it and prevent it from collapsing.
Not only Lu Mingfei, but several other strong rugby players were also sitting behind the wall, trembling.
As the sun disappeared, the temperature outside the plane reached a terrifying minus thirty degrees Celsius. Although it was a little better inside the cabin, it was still below zero.
Moreover, most of the people were not wearing enough warm clothes; they were just wearing shirts, and some were even wearing short sleeves like Lu Mingfei had been. By now, their lips had turned purple and their faces were pale from the cold.
However, the coldest place was where Lu Mingfei and his group were, with wind constantly blowing in through the cracks in the walls they had built.
Lu Mingfei felt that his back had lost all feeling, as if it were pressed against a block of ice that had stood for millennia.
He kept rubbing his arms and slapping his thighs, hoping to generate a little heat, but the effect was minimal. Just a few hours ago he was complaining about how hot it was, but now he was almost frozen solid.
"What sins did I commit in my past life... Why am I here... Is it because I cursed the sun before... I'm sorry, Mr. Sun... I shouldn't have cursed you... Please let me go back..." Just as Lu Mingfei was patting his body and muttering to himself on the verge of tears, a large bottle of wine was handed to him.
Lu Mingfei was stunned for a moment.
"Have some to warm up..." said a blond rugby player. Lu Mingfei remembered his name as Perez, who had helped carry Nono before. They found the wine in the cockpit; it must have been for the pilot himself.
Lu Mingfei hesitated for a moment, but still took the bottle and took a big gulp. A mixture of grape aroma and alcoholic irritation rushed into his throat. The taste was sweet and astringent, not very pleasant, and even a bit pungent. Sure enough, his favorite drink was still Nutritional Express.
This was Lu Mingfei's first time drinking alcohol. He quickly felt his body warm up and then handed the wine back. He wasn't naive enough to think that the whole bottle was for him.
"Thank you," Lu Mingfei said.
Perez took the bottle and handed it to the next person. Then, he took out a pack of cigarettes that were slightly deformed from his pocket, lit one, and handed it to Lu Mingfei.
Lu Mingfei took it as well, and then, imitating what he saw on TV, awkwardly put the filter into his mouth and carefully took a puff. The feeling of the smoke entering his mouth and throat was completely different from that of alcohol, and it made him cough violently, with tears almost streaming down his face.
"First time?" Several other rugby players sitting against the wall raised their eyebrows in surprise at Lu Mingfei's disheveled appearance.
They were about the same age as Lu Mingfei and had only been in university for a short time, but they all looked like seasoned smokers and were very skilled at their smoking.
In South America, many boys start smoking cigarettes at the age of twelve or thirteen, so they find it somewhat novel to see a peer who seems to have never smoked before.
"Hmm..." Lu Mingfei nodded somewhat awkwardly, wiping away the tears from the corners of his eyes.
Although he didn't do well in school, often slept in class, and liked to sneak off to internet cafes to play games, he considered himself a loser. But he was different from those students who liked to gather together to smoke and drink, and who looked like they were from the underworld.
"It's nothing, everyone's like this the first time they smoke. I remember when Canessa first smoked, he almost coughed up his lungs, and his face turned as red as a tomato!" A young man with flaxen hair named Roy said with a laugh.
"Hey! Roy! You bastard! Why don't you talk about yourself! Weren't you choking half to death just like me? You still have the nerve to criticize me!" The young man named Canesa next to him shouted in dissatisfaction.
Hearing the two playfully teasing each other, the people around them chuckled softly. Lu Mingfei's tense nerves relaxed a little, and the corners of his mouth unconsciously curved slightly.
He felt that the distance between him and these previously unfamiliar rugby players had been shortened at this moment. Sure enough, no matter where you are, a cigarette can always quickly bring men closer together.
After laughing, no one spoke again. Even though they had drunk alcohol, the cold still lingered. Lu Mingfei remembered his biology teacher saying that the so-called warming effect of drinking alcohol was just a vasodilation and heat illusion caused by alcohol, while the core body temperature was actually decreasing.
If Lu Mingfei and his group don't want to freeze to death, they'll have to find other ways to keep warm.
