Dragon Raja: Lu Mingfei's War Journey
Chapter 6 A Difficult Night
Lu Mingfei continued rubbing his body, thinking of other ways to keep warm, otherwise he would freeze to death here tonight even if he hadn't died in the plane crash.
He began to grope around for anything else to warm him up. Suddenly, he felt a hard edge on the side of a chair back. He turned around and carefully felt around, and his fingertips touched a cold metal zipper pull.
A thought flashed through his almost frozen brain like lightning: could the cloth cover on the airplane seat be removed?
He became excited, his fingers trembling as he struggled to pull the zipper head and slowly pulled it along the contour of the seat back. With a ripping sound, he heard the seat cover, just as he had guessed, simply covering the seat foam filling for easy removal and washing.
With a strong tug, he pulled off a whole piece of olive green seat cover, stained with some dirt. When unfolded, it looked like a narrow little blanket. Although it was thin, it was better than nothing.
"Hey! We can use these things to keep warm!" Lu Mingfei shouted excitedly to the rugby players next to him who were also shivering, while tightly wrapping the cloth cover he had taken off around his body.
Upon seeing this, the athletes who had been huddled up immediately sprang into action, frantically dismantling all the seat covers they could find. In an instant, the cabin was filled with the sizzling of zippers and the scraping sound of fabric being torn off.
Soon, everyone received one or two blankets, and they couldn't wait to wrap themselves up tightly.
However, compared to the freezing cold, the atmosphere inside the cabin was even more unbearable.
The plane, which was originally more than 20 meters long, now has only a short, relatively intact space of just over 6 meters between the cockpit and where Lu Mingfei and his group are.
Thirty-two people survived the plane crash, half of whom were seriously injured and needed to lie flat. However, some areas inside the cabin were filled with immovable wreckage and corpses. As a result, these thirty-odd survivors had to huddle together like sardines in a can, with almost no room to move.
Even the slightest movement, like just raising your hand to scratch your head, will inevitably result in your elbow bumping into the person next to you, followed by sharp curses from the pain and frustration.
Everyone carries injuries, some minor and some severe. Even the slightest movement can aggravate these wounds, causing excruciating pain. As a result, complaints arise one after another, with everyone claiming that their injuries are the most severe, that they need the most space, and that they deserve the most care.
The cabin was filled with the uncontrollable groans and screams of the wounded, and some began to ramble incoherently, praying to God and calling for their mothers.
The middle-aged woman whose legs were stuck in the twisted seat that Lu Mingfei had seen earlier screamed the loudest. She was still stuck in the middle of the seat, and every time someone tried to pull her out, she would let out a pig-like howl.
One of the people who was originally unconscious also woke up at this time. He seemed to have lost his memory due to the impact. He didn't know what had happened here or anyone here. He stood up in fear and tried to run outside, but then stepped on the person in front of him.
Immediately, a chorus of curses and screams erupted. In the end, several rugby players rushed over and struggled to hold him down, using the gentlest possible tone to calm him down, finally quelling the sudden commotion.
Someone was thirsty and wanted to go outside to get some snow to quench their thirst. Even though they were careful to avoid other people, they still couldn't help but touch some people's bodies, which led to howls and curses.
These sounds made Lu Mingfei feel as if he were in hell, surrounded by the howls of evil spirits.
However, there are advantages to huddling together. Their body heat helps them resist the cold, and those who are still conscious can hug each other and rub their arms and backs to get warmth. But the most seriously injured and unconscious people lying on the ground do not have this treatment.
They lay on the ground and no one wanted to touch them, both for fear of aggravating their injuries and because they had no way to keep others warm.
If things continued like this, they would surely freeze to death. Some of them understood this, so they pulled one of the young men, who was unconscious but did not appear to be seriously injured, into the middle of them and took turns warming him.
The other seriously injured, including Nono, were intentionally or unintentionally ignored. Clearly, their shocking injuries led the others to mentally condemn them, believing there was no need to waste precious energy and warmth on saving them.
But Lu Mingfei absolutely did not want Nuonuo to die like this. They came from the same place, spoke the same language, and were equally special here.
Although they were not familiar with each other, these shared traits made him feel a special closeness to Nono; she was his only kindred spirit in this hell.
He stood up, his body stiff, and went to Nuonuo's side. He then hugged Nuonuo in his arms. As soon as he hugged Nuonuo, he felt as if he was holding a large block of ice, not a person.
Nono's clothes were soaked when she arrived and later stained with blood. They were frozen stiff in the cold, with a thin layer of ice even forming on the edges.
Lu Mingfei pressed his cheek close to her nose to feel a faint, intermittent breath, proving she was still alive, but without enough warmth, death was only a matter of time.
Lu Mingfei hugged Nuonuo even tighter, and then covered Nuonuo with the chair cover he had just taken off. He was even colder than before, holding a piece of ice in his arms and having nothing to keep warm.
Lu Mingfei's body was trembling like a leaf, his teeth chattering. He felt as if he had been locked in a cold storage room, frozen and delirious, trying to warm himself up by hugging half a frozen pig.
Fortunately, Nuonuo wasn't a frozen pig after all; her body temperature began to rise in Lu Mingfei's arms, which made Lu Mingfei feel a little better.
Perhaps it was the exhaustion from the ordeal, or perhaps the cold dulled their senses, but the noise in the cabin gradually subsided, and the groans and curses turned into suppressed sobs and heavy breathing.
But this doesn't mean Lu Mingfei can get through the rest of the time easily; on the contrary, his torment has only just begun.
As the surrounding people quieted down, a low wail came from the cockpit.
"Kill me...please kill me..."
The sound was very weak, almost negligible compared to the previous noise, and no one paid any attention to it; they were trying to fall asleep.
But to Lu Mingfei, the voice sounded like a vengeful ghost demanding his life. He knew it was the co-pilot's voice, pleading with him.
He was starting to regret it. He shouldn't have gone to the cockpit or taken that gun. If he hadn't gone to the cockpit and taken that gun, could he be sleeping peacefully like everyone else right now?
Each cry from the co-pilot felt like a knife stabbing into Lu Mingfei's heart. This was far more painful than the sarcastic remarks his aunt had made. Hearing such painful wails, Lu Mingfei's heart began to struggle violently.
He hesitated, wondering if he should really kill the other person with a gun, and whether helping the other person escape was the right thing to do.
Lu Mingfei felt he was being driven mad by the wailing. Finally, he made up his mind to wait until dawn. If the co-pilot was still alive and pleading so painfully, then he... he would pull the trigger.
After making this decision, Lu Mingfei felt strangely at ease, as if a huge weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
But the night was longer and more unbearable than he had imagined.
He once wished the nights could be longer, because at night he wouldn't have to go to school or hear his aunt's endless nagging and scolding.
Nighttime is entirely his time. He can play StarCraft II without restraint in an internet cafe, or stroll alone on the street, enjoying the quiet and solitude that belongs to him.
He now huddled in the dark, cold cabin, cradling a girl on the verge of death, the cries of the dying echoing in his ears. How he longed for the day to come.
He longs to see the light...
Even a faint ray of dawn, as long as it can dispel the surrounding darkness and cold, is enough...
