The woods were full of decaying leaves, and there were obvious signs that someone had passed through.

Su Han used the flashlight beam to follow the trampled bushes and leaves, the tracks extending all the way to the foot of the mountain.

By the time he caught up, it was already dawn.

He looked toward the place where they had camped the night before, where several figures stood beside the now-extinguished campfire.

Su Han approached and saw that it was a woman and two children. All three of them were thin and pale. The older child was about seventeen or eighteen years old, and the younger one was only five or six years old.

The two children were crawling on the ground, eating the rabbit meat that he and Shen Chengyin had left over from the previous night, desperately stuffing even the scraps of meat covered in mud and blood into their mouths. The woman, meanwhile, was holding the skull that Shen Chengyin had crushed and weeping.

He couldn't hear what these people were saying, but he could vaguely guess that they were probably the family members of the attackers from last night.

He didn't seem to pose much of a threat, and as long as they didn't provoke him, he had no intention of meddling in their affairs.

Just as Su Han was about to leave, the roar of a car engine suddenly came from afar. The sound grew louder as it approached; it was two military jeeps traveling one after the other, and through the windows, one could see that the vehicles were full of people.

This type of convoy is typically used by superhumans from medium to large bases when they go out on missions.

They were already far from the Revival Base; the only large base nearby was Dawn Base.

Of course, it cannot be ruled out that there are other small bases not mentioned in the original text.

The car braked a short distance from the woman, kicking up a cloud of dust. Seeing someone approaching, the two children grabbed the rabbit meat from the ground and ran, completely disregarding the woman's safety.

The woman seemed to have lost all hope, clutching several pieces of broken skull in her hand, kneeling on the ground, staring blankly at the newcomer.

Eight men jumped off the vehicle, fully equipped and moving swiftly.

They looked down and glanced at the woman. The square-faced man in the lead had a kind face and looked to be about the same age as the woman, around thirty years old.

"Are you infected? What is a woman doing in this wilderness?" the man asked.

The woman seemed to be suddenly awakened by those words. She took in the clothes and appearance of the people in front of her and, as if she had found her pillar of support, broke down in tears.

"Commander! Commander, you must do us justice—our family has always lived honestly in the mountains. For the past two years of chaos, we have never come down the mountain out of fear. We rely entirely on hunting and farming to survive."

"My husband said he was going out to hunt a rabbit yesterday, and he was killed—he died unjustly, leaving us, a widow and orphan, unable to lift a finger, how are we supposed to survive!"

The man glanced at the crushed head on the ground and felt a wave of nausea.

Killing someone is usually just a matter of beheading them, but this guy went and smashed their head. It's physically repulsive.

Seeing that these people meant no harm to their mother, the two children cautiously came out. As they walked, they frantically stuffed rabbit meat into their mouths, choking and hiccuping incessantly, as if afraid someone would snatch it away.

The rabbit meat, stained with the father's brains and dust, was swallowed by them as if it were a precious treasure.

"Things are different now. This is the apocalypse, and people dying is normal. We need to look forward. Judging from your expression, you probably don't know that humanity has already built large bases, right? Why don't you come back with us? It's much safer there than outside, and there's food to eat."

The man advised.

Two years into the apocalypse, food is no longer the most pressing issue. Humanity is slowly rebuilding its homes, and Dawn Base is now more concerned with the birth rate. With children, humanity has a future.

However, less than one-tenth of the total survivors remain, and of those, only half are fertile.

If only we could bring this woman back to base.

"I can't even avenge my man! How can I face anyone else living?!" The woman frantically pulled out a piece of wood from the nearby campfire and began pounding her head with it.

But those pieces of wood were already very light, and after being heated by the fire, they became incredibly brittle. The woman had only tapped them twice when the wood broke and flew away.

From Su Han's vantage point, he couldn't hear what these people were saying from afar. Seeing that dawn was breaking, and fearing Shen Chengyin wouldn't be able to find him when he woke up, he turned and left.

As soon as Su Han left, the slightly older boy suddenly pointed in the direction where he had been hiding and said to the men:

"I know where they are. Those two killed my dad and are camping in the mountains. When I went to find them, they spotted me, but luckily I ran fast enough to shake them off, or my head would have been smashed!"

Two people?

Upon hearing this, the man turned and looked at his teammate.

Their team consisted of eight superhumans, all of them strong and robust young men.

There are only two people on the other side; they could easily take them down in a minute. What's there to be afraid of?

"Let's go check it out. The mission isn't urgent anyway. We can't just leave a woman here to die, can we?"

*

Su Han had just turned around and taken two steps when a system notification popped into her mind.

Someone is following us.

He turned around and, sure enough, saw several figures chasing after him.

He made a quick decision and ran in the opposite direction to lure the people away.

It's still unclear whether Shen Chengyin has woken up or not; we can't let them find the camp.

Su Han deliberately slowed down, and the group of uninvited guests who came on strong quickly caught up with her.

Only four people chased after them; the other four stayed behind to guard the equipment and vehicle.

The man paused for a moment when he saw Su Han.

He never expected that the vicious killer the little kid was talking about would actually be such a fair-skinned younger brother, who looked to be only about twenty years old. He showed no signs of being ravaged by the apocalypse and looked really young.

Judging from his appearance alone, he concluded that Su Han was not aggressive, and his tone softened accordingly.

"Little brother, are you also a superhuman? With great power comes great responsibility, don't you understand? What are you doing, a superhuman, bullying a family of ordinary people?"

After a moment's thought, Su Han understood the situation. Most likely, the woman was claiming innocence, saying they had killed someone. Without witnesses or physical evidence, she could easily sway anyone's opinion.

"Bullyed?" He blinked, feigning innocence. "Last night we were camping and eating there, and that man shot at us with a crossbow. If I hadn't dodged quickly, I'd be dead now. Shouldn't I have killed him?"

The man was taken aback; why were the two groups giving different versions of events?

"You have your reasons, and she has hers. Why don't you confront each other and clarify the whole story?"

Su Han frowned deeply, extremely annoyed.

He didn't tell the male lead when he left, and Shen Chengyin still doesn't know when he'll wake up.

What if I say no?

"Then we'll have to take matters into our own hands and ask you to come over." The man smiled. "Oh, right, and your companion too, we'll ask him to come along as well."

This is a blatant threat.

The system grew anxious along with it, [What exactly is your superpower? ...Absorbing crystal cores for so long hasn't made any progress. If you had a superpower, would you still be afraid of them? You'd just kill them all!]

Su Han didn't know what kind of superpower the other party had, and if he rashly attacked one against four, his chances of winning were slim.

He could only nod.

"Okay, I'll go with you."
