Chapter 318 Going to see Mom and Dad
In the nurses' station, several nurses on the night shift huddled together, glancing every now and then at the row of benches at the end of the corridor.
"Did you see that? The person who just got off the helicopter is indeed Director Zhou from the Third Provincial Hospital."
"How could we not recognize them? We even have photos of them visiting and providing guidance hanging on the walls of our hospital. What kind of background do they have to be able to transport experts from the provincial capital, along with their equipment, by helicopter in the middle of the night?"
"Didn't you see that middle-aged couple who came by just now? The car they were driving was a Mercedes-Benz G-Class! They must be some young master from a wealthy family."
"That girl is so lucky."
Chen Zhi sat on the bench, ignoring the whispers at the nurses' station.
He took out his phone and browsed through WeChat groups.
Despite all this commotion in the middle of the night, Deep Space Technology actually has a lot of other things to do.
Chen Zhi typed with one hand and briefly replied with a few comments.
He switched out of the group chat and opened Pei Ningxue's chat window.
The last message above was sent by Pei Ningxue in the early hours of the morning: 【Has the medical team arrived yet?】
Chen Zhi replied: [We've arrived. He's been resuscitated and is temporarily stable. Thank you so much for today.]
Zhang Guifang sat next to Chen Zhi and, seeing him constantly staring at his phone while working, couldn't help but lean closer and lower her voice.
"Is everything alright at the company? You, the big boss, left a whole bunch of things behind and rushed back. Don't let this interfere with the real business."
"It's okay, someone will handle it." Chen Zhi locked his phone and put it in his pocket.
Zhang Guifang sighed and looked in the direction of the emergency room. "Zhiyi is such a pitiful child. If you ever dare to wrong her in the future, I'll really break your other leg."
Chen Zhi touched his nose and didn't reply.
After about ten minutes, the door to the observation area opened.
Grandma Li Zhiyi walked out wiping away her tears.
Zhang Guifang quickly went to support her, "Auntie, how is the old man?"
"Much better, you can recognize people now." Grandma patted Zhang Guifang's hand, then turned to Chen Zhi, "Little Chen."
Chen Zhi immediately stood up, "Grandma."
"The old man said he wants to see you." Grandma's eyes reddened again. "Why don't you go in and say a few words to him? He seems to be in alright right now."
Chen Zhi nodded. "Okay."
He pushed open the door to the observation area and went inside.
It was very quiet inside, with only the regular "beep" sound from the monitor.
Li Jianjun lay on the hospital bed with an oxygen mask over his face and several IV tubes inserted into the back of his hand.
Li Zhiyi sat on a round stool by the bed, holding her grandfather's hand tightly, the one that hadn't been injected, tears still streaming down her face.
Hearing footsteps, Li Zhiyi turned around, her eyes swollen like walnuts.
"Chen Zhi." Her voice was completely hoarse.
Chen Zhi walked over, gently pressed on her shoulder, then bent down and leaned close to the hospital bed.
"Grandpa, are you feeling better?"
Li Jianjian heard the sound and struggled to open his eyes.
His eyes darted around, his gaze landing on Chen Zhi's face. He wanted to smile, but his facial muscles wouldn't cooperate.
He moved his lips.
Li Zhiyi quickly moved the oxygen mask slightly to create a small gap.
"Xiao Chen..." Li Jianjun's voice was very weak, "I...I don't know how much longer I can stay with Zhiyi."
"Grandpa, don't worry," Chen Zhi said softly. "The doctor said the worst is over. We'll go to the Third Provincial Hospital when it's light. The conditions there are better, and we can be transferred back to a regular ward after a few days."
Li Jianjun shook his head slightly, his breathing becoming somewhat rapid.
"I know my own body."
He took a couple of breaths and slowly turned his gaze to Li Zhiyi.
"This child... has had a hard life. He has never had a father or mother's love since he was a child, and he has suffered a lot of grievances while living with us two old people."
Li Zhiyi shook her head desperately.
"No, Grandpa, I wasn't wronged. Please stop talking and get some rest, okay?"
Li Jianjun ignored her and continued speaking to Chen Zhi intermittently.
"She's incredibly stubborn in everything she does. Once she's made up her mind, not even ten oxen could pull her back."
"You've helped her so much since she was little. When she was bullied as a child, you were always the one who protected her. I... I don't want to trouble you anymore."
Chen Zhi felt a pang in his heart.
He glanced at Li Zhiyi; the girl had her head down, her shoulders trembling, suppressing her sobs.
"What if..." Li Jianjun swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down with difficulty, "What if I'm gone? Could you... take good care of Zhiyi and her grandmother for me?"
Li Zhiyi finally couldn't hold back anymore and burst into tears, lying on the edge of the bed.
"Grandpa, don't say such unlucky things! You'll live to be a hundred! You haven't even seen me graduate from university yet!"
Chen Zhi did not hesitate.
He reached out and grabbed Li Zhiyi's hand, holding it along with the old man's withered fingers.
"Don't worry, Grandpa," Chen Zhi said firmly. "Zhiyi will definitely be happy in the future. I promise you."
He looked into the old man's eyes.
"You still need to take good care of yourself. Zhiyi hasn't graduated yet; she'll have to work and get married later. You have to see Zhiyi in her wedding dress with your own eyes, right?"
When Li Jianjun heard the word "marriage," a glimmer of light flashed in his cloudy eyes.
A string of tears slid down his cheeks, flowing down his wrinkles and into the pillow.
The old man nodded vigorously, tears welling in his eyes.
He withdrew his hand and tremblingly touched Li Zhiyi's head.
"Don't cry, little girl."
Li Jianjun took a deep breath, as if he had used up his last bit of strength.
"You understand."
"Let's take Xiao Chen... to see your parents."
By 8:00 AM, all the transfer procedures were completed.
An ambulance from the Third Provincial Hospital was parked at the entrance of the county hospital, and the expert team accompanied it.
Zhang Guifang and Chen Jun followed in their car, heading directly to the provincial capital to arrange hospitalization and caregivers.
Before leaving, Zhang Guifang pulled Li Zhiyi aside and handed her a bank card.
"The password is Chen Zhi's birthday. Take it, don't try to refuse me. Elderly people have many expenses in the hospital, you're a young woman, don't try to handle it all by yourself."
Li Zhiyi accepted it with tears in her eyes.
After the ambulance drove away, only Chen Zhi and Li Zhiyi remained at the entrance of the county hospital.
The county town was already bustling in the early morning, with steam rising from the carts selling steamed buns and fried dough sticks along the street, mixed with the aroma of soy milk.
Li Zhiyi stood on the steps, watching the direction the ambulance disappeared in, and her nerves, which had been tense all night, finally began to relax.
She turned around and looked at Chen Zhi standing next to her.
He had been up all night, his clothes were wrinkled, and there were faint red veins in his eyes.
"Let's go," Chen Zhi said.
Li Zhiyi nodded. "Let's go buy some things, then I'll take you to the cemetery."
The two walked along the street.
Passing by a flower shop, Li Zhiyi went in and bought two bunches of white chrysanthemums, and then went to the supermarket next door to buy some paper money and fruit.
Chen Zhi naturally took all the items and carried them in his hands.
The road to the cemetery was a bit out of the way, so the two of them took a local three-wheeled tuk-tuk.
Sitting in the bumpy truck bed, the wind felt a bit cool on my face.
Li Zhiyi looked at the farmland outside and suddenly spoke.
"Chen Zhi".
"Um?"
"I'm sorry," Li Zhiyi turned to look at him, "Thank you for your help."
"I've told you so many times, you don't need to say these things to me." Chen Zhi reached out and tucked her wind-blown hair behind her ear.
Li Zhiyi bit her lip.
"You had something important to do, but..."
"But I dragged you back here and made you stay up all night with me dealing with all this mess."
"What are you thinking?" Chen Zhi interrupted her. "Grandpa's in such a serious situation, if I don't come back, can you handle it all by yourself?"
The tuk-tuk stopped at the entrance of Nanshan Cemetery.
The two paid and walked up the stone steps.
Li Zhiyi's parents' graves are located halfway up the mountain, in a less than ideal location, surrounded by weeds.
Li Zhiyi walked over, skillfully pulled out the weeds, and wiped the dust off the tombstone with a tissue.
