Transmigrated into a fat wife, farming, raising children, and picking up husbands

Chapter 10 The Man on the Roadside: Why Not Pick Him Up?

My dream was bizarre and fantastical.

One moment it's a scene of a man covered in blood, being torn apart by wolves. The next moment it's him opening his eyes, his gaze cold as he questions her about why she didn't help him.

A moment later, they turned into thugs from the gambling den, bursting in and dragging Xiaobao away, while she stood there, unable to move...

"No!" Lin Xiuer exclaimed, suddenly sitting up in bed, her thin undergarment soaked with cold sweat.

Outside the window, the sun was already setting in the west, and the orange-red sunset painted half the sky red. She had actually slept for so long.

The bloody scene in her dream intertwined with the man's final, dying breath, making it difficult for her to breathe.

She sat there blankly for a long time, then suddenly raised her hand and wiped her face hard.

"Lin Xiuer, Lin Xiuer... you've already died once, are you afraid to meddle in other people's business again?"

Before she transmigrated, she lost her life because she couldn't ignore a child in danger. Now, should she turn a blind eye to another life because of fear and trouble?

She took a deep breath and made up her mind.

Pushing open the door, I saw Wang Shi gathering half-dried wild vegetables in the yard.

"Mother, I...I'll go up the mountain again." Lin Xiuer tried to keep her voice calm. "Something seems to have been left on the mountain. I'll go look for it and be back soon."

Wang was taken aback: "It's almost dark..."

"It's alright, Mom. It's just at the foot of the mountain. I'll be right back. You and Xiaobao eat first, don't wait for me."

Before Wang could persuade her further, Lin Xiuer picked up her cane, turned around, and went out the door.

The setting sun stretched her shadow long.

Leaning on her cane, she hurried along the path she had taken that morning into the mountains.

By the time we found the steep slope, it was already getting dark.

The man was still lying there, in the same position, but his face was even more ashen, and his lips were dry, cracked, and bleeding. Lin Xiuer's hand trembled as she checked his breath.

His breath was barely a whisper, even weaker than in the morning. I touched his forehead again; it was burning hot, but his body was ice cold.

"Forget it, you're unlucky to have met me, ptooey! You're lucky you weren't meant to die."

Lin Xiuer sighed and placed her left index finger on his lips. "I saved him. Whether he lives or dies is up to you."

A few drops of the spiritual spring liquid dripped into his mouth, and just when she thought she couldn't feed him any more, the man's Adam's apple bobbed slightly.

I swallowed it!

Alright, looks like this kid's got a tough life.

Lin Xiuer didn't know how much of a use this spiritual spring water could have, but at least it was a glimmer of hope.

The biggest challenge is getting people back.

The man didn't realize how tall he was when he was lying on the ground, but after being helped up, it became clear that he was really tall, at least 185 cm.

Looking at the man's tall figure, and then at her own fat but weak body, she had no choice but to drag herself along.

Lin Xiuer gritted her teeth, the veins on her forehead bulging, and half-carried, half-dragged the man down the mountain step by step. Each step felt like walking on cotton, or dragging a thousand-pound boulder.

The mountain forest was exceptionally quiet at night. She walked with difficulty, panting and trying to bolster her courage.

"Let me tell you... I'm no pushover either..."

"We didn't save you because you're good-looking. We only did it because...we felt sorry for you, you know? Besides, we took your money, and our conscience wouldn't let us get over it..."

"If you dare to repay kindness with enmity after you wake up," she deliberately added a touch of ruthlessness, "we'll...we'll throw you back up the mountain, and we mean it."

The man, of course, did not react at all; his head slumped limply on her shoulder, his hot breath brushing against her skin.

Lin Xiuer stopped talking and focused all her energy on the road beneath her feet. Sweat blurred her vision, and her back was soaked.

The mountain road was rugged, and the forest grew darker and darker, with scattered lights appearing in the distant Qingshan Village.

When it was completely dark, Lin Xiuer finally made her way step by step to the gate of her dilapidated courtyard.

She practically shoved the door open with her shoulder, sweat streaming down her forehead, her back soaked through, and her injured foot trembling with pain.

As soon as they entered, they collapsed to the ground with a thud, along with the person on their back.

Lin Xiuer was panting heavily, and the man slid to the side following her force.

"Xiuer! What are you doing...?" Wang, who was busy by the stove, heard the noise and came over with a dim oil lamp.

The light flickered, illuminating the blood-soaked figure on the ground, which startled the old man so much that his hand trembled and he almost spilled the lamp oil.

When she saw her daughter looking exhausted and on the ground, and the unconscious, injured man, Wang's astonishment lasted only a moment before she sighed.

"Come on, help him up and bring him inside!" She put down the oil lamp and, without the slightest hesitation, stepped forward to help Lin Xiuer support the man's other arm.

Now it was Lin Xiuer's turn to be surprised. She hadn't expected her mother to accept it so quickly, her expression even calmer than hers: "Mother, aren't you going to ask who this is?"

"Save him first!" Wang wasn't very strong, but the mother and daughter worked together to drag and pull the man into the house and settle him on the hard bed where Lin Xiuer was sleeping.

Once the man lay down, the already cramped room felt even more crowded.

Wang turned around and went to the stove to boil water, rummaging through drawers and cupboards looking for clean old strips of cloth. There wasn't a single decent piece of cloth in the house, so in the end she had to tear up her most worn-out undergarment.

Exhausted, Lin Xiuer sat on the doorstep to catch her breath. Watching her mother's busy figure, so skilled it was heartbreaking, she felt an increasingly strange feeling in her heart.

When Wang came in with a basin of warm water and began carefully wiping the blood off the man's face, Lin Xiuer finally couldn't help but lean over and whisper a question.

"Mother... I picked up a strange man and he got hurt like this. Aren't you afraid of getting into trouble? Aren't you going to ask him if he's a good person or a bad person?"

Wang continued working, gently wiping away the blood scabs between the man's eyebrows and eyes with a damp cloth, without even raising her head.

"What are you afraid of? It's not like it's the first time you've done it."

Lin Xiuer looked utterly bewildered: "...???"

Only then did Wang turn her head and look at her daughter with a helpless expression.

"You've forgotten? Wasn't your ex-husband the same way?"

"You mean, Xiao Bao's dad?"

"Yes, that's right," Wang replied, carefully wiping the man's high, straight nose with a damp cloth.

"I remember, you were only sixteen that year. On a whim, you went up the mountain to catch pheasants, just like other people. You didn't catch any pheasants, but you carried back a man covered in wounds from the mountain. And you still insisted on marrying him."

Lin Xiuer was struck dumb, her mouth agape, unable to close it for a long time.

In the original owner's fragmented memories, the information about the husband she had taken in was very vague. She only remembered that he was a handsome man who later fell to his death while chopping wood on the mountain. But she never expected that this was how she came to be.

"So...so..." Lin Xiuer pointed to the unconscious man on the bed, "Are you used to it? You're not surprised anymore?"

Wang laughed at her words, shook her head, and continued what she was doing: "What do you mean by 'it's nothing unusual'? I just know that my Xiuer may seem eccentric, but she's actually kind-hearted."

"Your mother didn't teach you well before and spoiled you, but the kindness in your bones has always been there."
