Chapter 118 Little Mushroom, Here We Come!
The group chattered as they made their way towards the lush forest behind the mountain.
Entering the mountains felt like stepping into another world.
The mountain forest was quiet and serene, with the fresh scent of grass and trees filling the air. The seven people walked up the winding path, the fallen leaves rustling under their feet.
Yesterday's heavy rain soaked the mountains and forests, making the air particularly humid. The mist in the woods hasn't completely dissipated yet, remaining wispy and dreamlike.
A mountain breeze rustled through the grass and trees, sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows, and every now and then, the clear chirping of birds echoed from the depths of the forest.
"Be careful, watch out for the slippery ground." Lin Xiuer, who was walking in front, kept turning back to remind them, her voice sounding somewhat ethereal in the woods.
She carried a large basket on her back and held a sharpened wooden stick in her hand, brushing aside the wet fallen leaves and moss.
Having learned from her previous experience of mushroom picking, Lin Xiuer was much more at ease this time.
"When picking mushrooms, please remember that mushrooms like to grow in shady, damp places with thick layers of fallen leaves, especially under pine trees and next to oak trees!"
"If you see plump caps with a slightly muted color and a woody scent, you can usually pick them!"
"Never touch anything with overly bright colors or bizarre patterns!"
She had barely finished speaking when she made her own discovery.
"There's one here!" she exclaimed softly, crouching down and carefully using a stick to brush away a layer of damp, brownish pine needles.
Several plump-looking mushrooms, topped with small brown caps and whose caps were not yet fully open, were revealed.
The stem is thick and covered with soil and broken leaves.
"These are matsutake mushrooms! They're incredibly flavorful in soups and stir-fries!"
Lin Xiuer's eyes lit up. She patted the umbrella canopy twice and then gently picked the flowers one by one.
Brush away the soil and decaying leaves from the roots, and carefully place them into the basket as if they were precious treasures.
After picking a few pine mushrooms, the group continued on their way.
Chen Mingxuan was still curious about everything. One moment he pointed to a bunch of small, purplish-black berries on a tree and asked if they were edible, and the next he was attracted by a squirrel that suddenly darted by.
Wu Liangcai stared wide-eyed at Lin Xiuer's movements and the bushes under the trees, afraid of missing any corner where mushrooms might be hiding.
Hu Yidao watched them from behind with a smile, observing their naive and unsophisticated manner.
Liu Sanzhen would occasionally bend down and pick up a leaf or two with a unique shape to examine, seemingly pondering whether the patterns on them could be used in embroidery designs.
Liu Ruyan walked at the back, her steps light and graceful, as if the slippery mountain path beneath her feet were a stage.
She lifted her skirt slightly, carefully avoiding the mud and puddles, while her clear eyes curiously surveyed this completely unfamiliar mountain forest.
Sunlight danced through the gaps in the leaves, bathing her in a soft glow.
After walking for about 15 minutes, the group entered the dense forest where Lin Xiuer usually gathered spices.
With sharp eyes, Wu Liangcai pointed and excitedly exclaimed, "Sister Lin, look over there! Aren't there some mushrooms? They're yellow!"
Following his pointing finger, everyone looked and sure enough, next to the moss at the base of an old pine tree, several small mushrooms with thick caps and a warm, oily color were clustered together.
With lingering water droplets on its head, it waved its hand brightly.
"That's right, these are chanterelle mushrooms, they're perfect for soup!" She skillfully used a small hoe to pry them up, roots and all, and put them into her basket.
"There are some here too!" Hu Yidao spotted a cluster of yellowish-brown mushrooms under an old pine tree not far away and excitedly reached out to grab them.
"Don't move!" Liu Sanzhen stepped forward to stop him and looked him over carefully.
"This is called 'pine needle mushroom.' It looks edible, but it's actually poisonous. Mild cases cause vomiting and diarrhea, while severe cases can be fatal."
He pointed to the patterns on the inside of the cap, "Remember, if the patterns are fine and bluish, there's probably something wrong with it."
Old Hu withdrew his hand in fright, his chubby face full of lingering fear: "Old Liu, you're so thoughtful."
Ping An walked a little behind, his steps were light and steady, and his eyes always seemed to spot something unusual wherever they swept across the ground.
Beside a shady pile of rotting wood, he crouched down and gently parted the damp moss with a machete, revealing several large, fleshy mushrooms with dark brown caps.
"Wife, can we eat this?" He asked Lin Xiuer.
"It's edible." Lin Xiuer leaned closer for a look and exclaimed with delight, "It's hazel mushrooms! These are a wonderful thing; they're a perfect match when stewed with chicken."
Her eyes sparkled as she looked at Ping An. "My husband is amazing! You managed to find me even though I was hiding so well!"
Hearing his wife's generous praise, Ping An felt very pleased, and the corners of his lips unconsciously curved upwards.
After picking a few hazel mushrooms, we continued our exploration.
Chen Mingxuan wasn't very interested in mushroom picking, but he was intrigued by the various plants in the forest. He grabbed a plant whose leaves spread out like feathers.
"Xiuer, what's this? It looks really nice."
"That's bracken!" Lin Xiuer walked over with a smile, plucked the tenderest shoots, "It's at its most tender now. Blanch it and make a cold salad, or stir-fry it with cured meat. It's so crisp and refreshing."
On a shady slope, tender ferns, curled up like a baby's fist, covered in downy hairs, peek out densely, appearing exceptionally fresh against the dark green background.
"There are plenty around here. Pick more and I'll stir-fry them with cured meat for you when we get back."
"Okay." Chen Mingxuan happily began picking ferns.
Liu Ruyan followed silently in the group, her movements gentle and precise.
Under a clump of low shrubs, she discovered a large patch of grayish-white mushrooms with caps shaped like small saucers. She carefully picked them one by one and neatly arranged them in her basket.
Sunlight filtered through the branches and leaves, illuminating her focused profile, making even the dirt on her fingertips appear exceptionally tranquil.
"Ouch!" Hu Yidao, who was walking on the side, suddenly cried out, his foot slipped, and he almost fell.
He steadied himself against a tree and was surprised to find a large patch of dark green vines coiled around the base of the tree, with clusters of dark green fruits the size of soybeans hanging on them.
"Isn't this Sichuan pepper? Come and see, young lady!"
"That's right!" Lin Xiuer leaned over and smelled the spicy and unique aroma. "Pick more, dry them, grind them into powder, and they'll be an excellent flavoring for cooking."
Liu Sanzhen, however, was more interested in another spice. He discovered several clumps of plants with slender leaves and pale purple flowers in a crevice in the rocks.
"Xiuer, come quick! Is this wild fennel?"
He plucked a leaf, rubbed it, and a rich fragrance wafted out.
"Yes, it's also called 'mountain fennel'." Lin Xiuer nodded. "It removes the fishy smell and enhances the aroma when stewing meat. It tastes stronger than the homegrown kind. Let's pick more and dry them in the sun."
"good!"
The group dispersed, each searching for their own treasure.
Occasionally, joyful shouts would echo through the woods, "Haha! I found another big nest!" And then, the question, "Xiuer, can we eat this?" would come from within.
The basket gradually became heavy, filled with chanterelles, hazel mushrooms, straw mushrooms, porcini mushrooms, tender ferns, mountain pepper, and wild fennel.
Clumps of wild scallions were also dug up, their white roots covered in soil, emitting a unique spicy aroma from the mountains.
Wu Liangcai was trying to reach a cluster of mushrooms in a crevice in the rock high up when he stood on tiptoe and stretched his neck. He almost slipped and fell, but Chen Mingxuan caught him in time.
The two looked at each other and chuckled.
