Transmigrated into a fat wife, farming, raising children, and picking up husbands
Chapter 151 Renaming
the other side.
Clutching the two taels of silver he had earned from selling his daughter, Yi Huainian turned down a street and then into an alley, stopping in front of a house.
He glanced back to make sure no one was following him before raising his hand to knock on the door.
Three short and two long.
The door creaked open a crack, and the person inside looked at him and stepped aside.
Yi Huainian slipped inside.
He crossed the courtyard, went up to the second floor, and pushed open the door of the innermost room facing the street.
A lamp was lit inside, casting a dim, yellowish glow. A person stood by the window, their back to the door, looking out.
Yi Huainian had completely changed from his previous cowardly drunkard appearance; his posture had straightened up and his eyes were clear.
He walked to the edge of the bed, plopped down on his backside, covered his face, and grimaced in pain.
"Hey Lao Shen," he said, pointing to his swollen cheek, "I can't let this punch go unpunished, can I? It should at least be considered a work injury."
The person by the window turned around.
It was the same itinerant doctor who set up a stall at the market during the day.
He walked over, looked at Yi Huainian's face in the lamplight, and smiled wryly: "What do you mean by work-related injury? How about I give you a couple of acupuncture needles to reduce the swelling?"
Yi Huainian jumped in surprise and quickly shrank back: "Hey! No, no, no! I was just joking! You might be able to fool old men and women with that needle, but I wouldn't dare be your guinea pig."
The doctor—or rather, Shen Qing—ignored him, walked to the window, and continued looking down.
From this angle, you can see the street in front of the government office. Under the moonlight, three figures are slowly walking away.
Yi Huainian leaned closer, following his gaze: "Speaking of which, that kid Pei Zhao... really has amnesia? Is the information you found accurate?"
Shen Qing didn't turn around: "Whether my inquiries are accurate or not, didn't you see for yourself that he recognized you?"
Yi Huainian touched his swollen face and smacked his lips: "No. The way he looked at me was the same as how he looked at a stranger."
"I had such a big argument with his wife, and even though he tried to stop me, there wasn't a shred of emotion in his eyes. If he was faking it, he was really good at faking it."
Yi Huainian sighed and slumped back onto the couch.
"What secret mission did that old emperor assign him? How come he went from being a high-ranking officer and a member of the emperor's personal guard to a humble villager selling pancakes?"
He thought for a moment, then added, "But that kid looks well-fed; he must be living a comfortable life. He still has fair skin and delicate features, unlike an ordinary villager."
"She's even fairer than when she was in the capital. That Lin Xiuer, although she's a bit plump, is really good to him. Look at the way she looks at him, she's glued to him."
Shen Qing's lips curved slightly.
"That's a good thing," he said.
"This can't be called a good thing?" Yi Huainian glared. "Our Lord Pei, a dignified commander of the Imperial Guard, is being kept by a village woman? If word gets out..."
"What if word gets out?" Shen Qing interrupted him. "He has amnesia now, he's not Pei Zhao. The more he acts like an ordinary person, the safer he is."
Yi Huainian was stunned for a moment, then nodded.
"Too."
He reclined on the couch and suddenly asked, "Old Shen, what if he really loses his memory and just keeps living like this, refusing to come back with us?"
Shen Qing stood by the window, her gaze following the receding figure, the smile on her lips fading.
No, it won't.
"Are you so sure?"
"Um."
Moonlight fell on his profile, his eyes were deep and unfathomable, and it was impossible to tell what he was thinking.
Three figures walked slowly along a country road.
"Sister, where will I live from now on?"
"There aren't many rooms in the house, but we can squeeze in," Lin Xiuer said. "You can stay with my mother and Xiaobao for a few days. Once the garden in the west of the town is finished, we'll prepare a room for you on your own."
"The garden in the west of town?" The girl blinked. "You mean that haunted garden?"
Lin Xiuer raised an eyebrow: "You knew too?"
"Yes, it's all over town." The girl nodded. "They say there's a ghost there, and you can hear crying at night. Nobody dares to go there."
"Are you scared?"
The girl thought for a moment and shook her head: "I'm not afraid when I'm with my sister."
Lin Xiuer couldn't help but laugh and reached out to ruffle her hair.
She hadn't walked far when she spoke again: "Sister, is Xiao Bao... easy to get along with?"
"He's easy to get along with," Lin Xiuer said. "He's just a chatterbox, always chattering away. Just don't find him annoying."
"No, no, no!" the girl quickly shook her head. "I like children!"
"That's good."
"Sister, what do you do every day? Can I help you with the chores?"
"I sell pancakes, egg pancakes, and jianbing guozi at the market every day," Lin Xiuer said. "If you'd like, you can come help us at the stall tomorrow, okay?"
"I'm willing!" the girl nodded eagerly. "I'm very efficient at work and I won't slack off! You'll definitely benefit from taking me in!"
"I've heard people in town say that there's a woman named Lin who sells pancakes. Her egg pancakes and jianbing guozi (Chinese crepes) are so delicious they make people drool."
Lin Xiuer smiled: "Okay, then starting tomorrow, you'll be my little helper."
The girl smiled happily, her eyes crinkling with laughter. The tear tracks on her face hadn't completely dried, but she was a completely different person.
"Sister, how do you make that pancake? Is it difficult?"
"It's not difficult, I'll teach you."
"Sister, how far is it from home?"
"It's not far, we'll get there in a little while."
"Sister, why did you buy me?"
Lin Xiuer paused in her steps.
She looked down at the girl, who looked up at her too. The moonlight shone in her eyes, making them sparkle.
"Because you were looking at me then, and your eyes were red," Lin Xiuer said, "like a homeless little rabbit begging for shelter."
The girl paused for a moment, then giggled. As she laughed, her eyes welled up with tears again.
She turned her head and sniffed hard.
"Sister," she said in a muffled voice.
"Um?"
"Thank you."
Lin Xiuer's heart softened again, and she reached out to rub her hair.
Yi Liuyun narrowed his eyes, like a kitten being stroked, and moved closer, clutching Lin Xiuer's clothes tightly.
Lin Xiuer held the girl's hand and continued walking forward. The moonlight illuminated the path beneath their feet, and occasionally the chirping of insects could be heard from the roadside bushes.
As she walked, she suddenly remembered something and looked down at the girl beside her.
"Liuyun," she murmured the name, "Yi Liuyun."
The girl looked up at her, her eyes bright.
Lin Xiuer thought for a moment, then slowly said, "Your name is nice, but—"
She paused, looking at the girl's thin little face.
"Look, the clouds drift by, floating in the sky. They go wherever the wind blows, unable to control their own destiny."
"Your life story is like the clouds in the sky, drifting aimlessly without a place to settle, which is why your life story is so tragic."
Her voice was gentle. "Why don't you change your name today? Let's make peace with the past you."
