Chapter 17 Third Brother
Looking at her composed expression, Wang hesitated for a moment, but still nodded.
"Then... will your mother go with you? Your third sister-in-law has a bad temper, but she still listens to your mother a little..."
"No need, Mother." Lin Xiuer shook her head. "I'll go myself. I have to face the debts and the heartbreak myself. You can stay home and look after Xiaobao."
Lin Xiuer changed her clothes, carefully counted out three taels of silver, and planned to first repay the debt she owed her third sister-in-law.
He then counted out another fifty coins and put them in as a deposit for the custom-made trolley.
Lin Dafu's family lives a little south of the west side of the village, not far away.
She encountered several early-rising villagers on the road, who all avoided her when they saw her, their eyes full of disdain and wariness.
Lin Xiuer was used to their stares and pretended not to notice. She walked straight to a somewhat old but noticeably neater brick and tile house than her own.
As soon as you approach, you can hear the clanging of wood chisels and saws coming from inside the courtyard, even through the gate.
She stood at the door and raised her hand to knock.
The sound of chiseling wood stopped.
A moment later, the door creaked open.
A man who looked to be about twenty-five or twenty-six years old, with dark skin and a strong build, came out, holding a plane in his hand. It was Lin Dafu.
Upon seeing the person standing at the door, Lin Dafu was taken aback at first, and then, before she could speak, he immediately threw down the plane in his hand and covered Lin Xiuer's mouth with his hand.
He glanced nervously at the main room behind him, then dragged her outside without saying a word.
Lin Dafu moved too fast; Lin Xiuer didn't even have time to react.
"Huh!" Lin Xiuer stared wide-eyed in shock.
Regardless of whether Lin Xiuer was willing or not, he grabbed her arm with his other hand, so tightly that Lin Xiuer couldn't break free.
Lin Dafu dragged her all the way to a secluded corner more than ten feet away from his house before stopping.
She let go, glancing back nervously. Seeing no movement, she lowered her voice and said, "My goodness! Why are you here again?"
"You, you..." He pointed at Lin Xiuer, so angry he could barely speak, "You dare come here! If your sister-in-law sees this, there'll be a huge fight!"
"Didn't I just give you five catties of flour yesterday? Did you finish it all so quickly? Or... did you gamble it away again?!"
Lin Dafu's final question was filled with barely suppressed anger and disappointment.
Lin Xiuer was a little confused by this series of actions. Looking at the man in front of her, who was anxious, angry and scared, she felt a heavy pang of sorrow in her heart.
It turns out that the original owner of this body had already caused her family to be so wary and fearful. Even when visiting their home, she acted like a thief, terrified of being discovered by her sister-in-law.
She sighed, suppressing the bitterness in her heart. Unlike the original owner, she didn't jump up and refute or cry, nor did she rush to defend herself.
Lin Xiuer bowed deeply to Lin Dafu: "Third Brother, I'm sorry."
Lin Dafu was startled and took a step back, as if he didn't believe he had misheard: "What did you say?"
"I said, I'm sorry." She spoke clearly, word by word, and calmly took out the small cloth bag she had prepared from her bosom.
Lin Dafu was startled by his younger sister's unusual behavior and looked at her warily, as if a venomous snake might crawl out of the cloth bag.
Lin Xiuer opened the layers one by one in front of him.
In the morning light, a few taels of silver and a few dozen copper coins lay quietly on the coarse cloth.
Lin Dafu's eyes widened suddenly, as if he had seen something extremely unbelievable. His mouth opened slightly, but all the rebukes and curses he had prepared got stuck in his throat.
He stared at the silver for a long time, then looked up at Lin Xiuer, his eyes filled with surprise and confusion.
But his sister didn't have the smugness she used to have when she won a bet, nor the panic of someone who had stolen something.
Lin Xiuer looked at him calmly: "Paying back debts is a matter of course. I was ignorant before and dragged my brother and sister-in-law down with me. Please accept this money."
"The three taels of silver is what I owed Third Sister-in-law before. This fifty coins is a deposit." She handed the cloth bag forward.
"Third Brother, I'd like to ask you—the best carpenter in Qingshan Village—to make me a small cart. It doesn't need to be too big, but it must be sturdy and lightweight, the kind I can push around the streets selling food. Ideally, it would have a rack to hold the stove and the countertop."
She thought for a moment, and meeting Lin Dafu's still incredulous gaze, added, "Oh, cash settlement, no delays."
The wind rustled through the haystacks behind me, and the sounds of roosters crowing and dogs barking drifted from afar.
Lin Dafu did not go to answer it, standing there like a wooden sculpture that had suddenly been frozen in place.
He looked at the silver, then at the copper coins, and then at his younger sister who seemed to have been reborn. Her expression kept changing on her sun-darkened face.
"Where did you get this money? Tell me the truth, did you go to the gambling den again?"
"Of course not. I got this by pawning an old piece of iron I found while collecting herbs on the mountain. I've really thought it through. I won't gamble anymore. I'll live a good life from now on and take good care of my mother and Xiaobao." Lin Xiuer's tone was firm and neither humble nor arrogant.
After a long while, Lin Xiuer's arm holding the cloth bag started to ache, while Lin Dafu was still staring at her face with an inscrutable expression, as if he didn't recognize her.
Lin Xiuer wasn't in a hurry; she was waiting.
She waited for her third brother, who had been heartbroken and terrified by her, to believe that his former scoundrel sister had truly reformed.
Lin Dafu was so shocked that he couldn't recover for a long time.
Pay back the money? Order a custom-made car? Sell food?
These words, coming from the mouth of his youngest sister who always only knew how to ask for money and throw tantrums, were more unusual than the sun rising in the west.
He stared into Lin Xiuer's eyes, trying to find the greed, superficiality, or scheming of the past, but he found none. Those once cloudy eyes were now crystal clear, containing only an almost stubborn seriousness.
"You...you really think so?" Lin Dafu's voice was dry and uncertain.
"Really." Lin Xiuer nodded. "Third Brother, I know I was a bad person before and hurt you. I don't expect you to believe me right away, but watch what I do. Take this money. Think about the car first, and I'll come back when you've made up your mind."
She stuffed three taels of silver and fifty coins into the still somewhat dazed Lin Dafu's hand, then turned to leave.
"Wait!" Lin Dafu called out to her, looking at the money in his hand, then at his sister's noticeably thinner back. A strange tension in his heart eased slightly. He opened his mouth, but finally only mumbled, "...The mountain roads are difficult to walk on. Don't go into the deep mountains too often. Mother is getting old and can't take a fright. Third brother will draw you a design first; you can start construction once you've approved it."
Lin Xiuer paused, a surge of joy in her heart. She turned back and nodded to him, "Alright, we'll do as Third Brother says. Let's draw the diagram first. I'll head back now."
