Transmigrated into a fat wife, farming, raising children, and picking up husbands
Chapter 21 Confession
Standing in the courtyard, the cool night breeze dissipated some of the heat from my face.
Lin Xiuer raised her hand and pressed it against her chest, where her heart was beating a little fast.
She turned around and glanced at the window that emitted a dim yellow light.
Lin Xiuer, wake up! How could you let a man's good looks cloud your judgment?
What kind of male bodhisattvas haven't I seen on Douyin before? This man is ridiculously handsome, but not so handsome that he'll make you dizzy and forget about your mother and son.
You're a 200-pound fat guy now, your fingers are as thick as a rolling pin.
Judging by her appearance, how big must this person's heart be to accept that she is his wife so easily?
Yes! This person isn't a skilled actor; they're just plain crazy.
And then there's the matter of her taking his knife. Although it was to save her life and pay off her debts at the time, she still took his things nonetheless.
Now that he's awake, although he's lost his memory and seems a bit slow-witted, there's a limit to lying, and this matter still needs to be discussed openly.
After calming herself down, Lin Xiuer took the clean strips of cloth from the clothesline, pushed the door open again, and went back inside to change the man's dressing.
The man remained in the same position, and when she returned, he looked up at her. The dim light of the oil lamp illuminated half of his face.
She took out some wound medicine from the cabinet, bent down and approached: "It's time to change the dressing."
Before, when the man was in a coma, she did whatever she wanted with cleaning and dressing him.
But now, he sat there soberly, his clothes half-undone, revealing his muscular chest wrapped in strips of cloth, his eyes looking at her clearly. Lin Xiuer suddenly found herself unable to bring herself to do it.
When my fingers touched his warm skin, I inexplicably felt my fingertips getting hot.
She forced herself to focus on the wound. She tried to calm herself by recalling those iconic scenes she'd seen before—the chopped-up pieces, the cement-sealed hearts—to fill bags.
The bandage was untied, revealing the man's gruesome wound on his chest. She carefully cleaned it, applied medicine, and re-bandaged it.
Throughout the entire process, the man remained silent, only occasionally taking a light breath and tensing his body slightly when the powder irritated or aggravated his injury.
Besides the new wounds, he also had some old injuries, but since he had no memory of them, Lin Xiuer didn't feel comfortable asking him any more questions.
The man's breath was close at hand, warmly brushing against her forehead and ears. Lin Xiuer could clearly smell the faint scent of medicine on him, as well as a clean, refreshing aroma that belonged to him.
Her hands kept moving, but her eyes kept drifting uncontrollably to his muscular physique, and her ears burned.
After finally changing the dressing, Lin Xiuer's forehead was covered in a fine layer of sweat.
"Um...would you like to go out...to use the restroom?" she asked, her voice slightly stammering.
He had been unconscious for the past two days and hadn't eaten much. Now that he's awake, he needs to go to the toilet.
A hint of embarrassment flashed across the man's face, but he did not refuse. With Lin Xiuer's help, he slowly got up and got out of bed.
The man was very tall, and even though she was weak, his weight made it difficult for her to stand.
The two were very close, and she dared not look at him sideways. Her body stiffened as she helped him move to the outside of the simple outhouse behind the house, and then she quickly turned her back to him.
After helping him back to his room and lying down, Lin Xiuer pulled out a money pouch from deep inside the tattered wardrobe. "There's something else I need to tell you."
Lin Xiuer sat down on the stool beside his bed. "Your injuries are too severe, you need medicine. We don't have a single penny at home, so I... I pawned the knife you always carry with you to get money for the medicine."
She paused, observing his reaction. The man's face remained expressionless, his deep black eyes still filled with confusion.
"I pawned the knife for over twenty taels of silver. I spent some on medicine and food for you, and the rest is all here."
Lin Xiuer took out the remaining money and spread it in her palm. "After we pay off our debts, I want to use the remaining money to start a small food business. When we have money in the future, I'll definitely make you another one, okay?"
She spoke frankly; she may not have acted with complete righteousness, but she was absolutely clear in her conscience.
Putting aside the life-saving grace, she didn't squander a single penny of it.
The man silently looked at the money in her palm, then looked up at her, his gaze lingering for a moment on her blistered hands, before slowly speaking.
"Of course. It's just a knife, nothing more. You can do with it as you see fit, my lady."
His tone was calm and matter-of-fact, as if what was pawned was not a weapon that might be related to one's status, but just an ordinary object.
Night had fallen, and Lin Xiuer took out an old mattress, preparing to sleep on the floor.
"My wife," the man on the bed suddenly spoke, watching her movements.
"Huh?" Lin Xiuer turned around in confusion.
Under the dim light of the oil lamp, the man looked at her and said calmly, "The floor is cold, you... come and sleep on the bed."
Lin Xiuer: "..."
The man lay on his side, facing her, moonlight streaming in through the broken window, illuminating his open and honest eyes.
Brother, although we are husband and wife, it's not real! It's a misunderstanding!
Do you have absolutely no sense of caution towards a woman who used to beat and scold you but has just reformed?
The way you act so completely uninhibited, even inviting me to share a bed, is dangerous, little brother! You're going to get hurt easily, don't you know that?
"No." She shook her head, refusing without hesitation. "You're injured. I'm a restless sleeper and I'll put pressure on your wound. Just go to sleep quietly and don't move around."
Just kidding, he's out of his mind, but Lin Xiuer isn't.
According to her mother, people here get married and have children at the age of sixteen or seventeen. What if the man already has a wife at home?
She didn't want to be a mistress, nor did she want him to kill her family to silence them after regaining his memory.
The man looked at her quietly for a few seconds, then didn't insist, only saying softly, "Well... I'm sorry to have to put you through this."
"I'm not wronged!" Lin Xiuer blew out the oil lamp and lay back down. "You should go to sleep quickly so your injury will heal faster. You've finished your medicine; I'll go to town tomorrow to get some more."
In the darkness, she listened to the man's breathing gradually becoming steady on the bed, but her mind was a jumbled mess.
Moonlight slunk in through the broken window, casting several pale patches of light on the ground.
Lin Xiuer turned over, facing the mottled earthen wall, feeling a mix of emotions she couldn't quite describe.
This man's emotions are too stable! What's going on in his mind? He even invited her to bed because he was worried she'd catch a cold.
He not only had no complaints about his wife, who had treated him badly in the past, but also took responsibility for her and the family.
Lin Xiuer asked herself honestly, if it were her, she might not be able to accept it so calmly.
Let alone the chaotic love and marriage of modern times, you rarely see men like this even in storybooks.
Envy, or rather, jealousy.
She was starting to feel a little jealous of the real family members who might exist in this man's true memories.
If he's like this even with amnesia, then what kind of person was he originally?
How good he must be to his family and children? How happy the woman who marries him must be!
When his memory returns or the truth comes out, all the warm illusions here will shatter like bubbles. He will have his real family and a true sense of belonging.
As for Lin Xiuer, her relationship with him was nothing more than a laughable misunderstanding.
Forget it, men are all fleeting. The most important thing right now is to make money, pay off debts, and support the family.
Once she has money, she won't be short of any gigolos at Nanfeng Pavilion.
The cooing of night birds came from outside the window.
Lin Xiuer finally drifted off to sleep.
