Chapter 4 A Mother Only Hopes for Her Son's Well-being
"Before..." Wang's eyes glazed over for a moment, as if she had been stung by something.
Xiuer used to be her youngest daughter, whom she cherished dearly.
She saved the best food, the thickest rice porridge, and the freshest wild vegetables for her baby.
She was the apple of her eye, whom her three daughters-in-law complained about for favoritism, but she still gritted her teeth and protected.
But that Xiuer would smash a bowl and call her a useless old hag if she didn't get money. She would complain about the food she cooked and throw chopsticks in her face.
That Xiuer would hurl the most vicious words at Xiaobao, her own grandson, and raise her hand with a ferocity more brutal than when beating livestock.
That scoundrel would repeatedly steal the last of the family's food rations and sneak into the gambling den. When she came out, she was filled with rage, her eyes bloodshot, smashing the house to pieces and crushing everyone's hearts in the mud.
That same Xiu'er, in the night, used an old hemp rope to hang herself. She hated everyone, hated this wretched life. She wanted to use her death to make sure no one could live in peace!
Tears welled up in Wang's eyes again. Looking at her daughter, who was both strange and familiar, and then at her little grandson huddled in the corner, she was overwhelmed by immense grief and confusion.
Lin Xiuer watched her cry, her heart aching. She knew this question was cruel, like a dull knife, tearing at the deepest scars in the old woman's heart.
But she had to ask. She needed to know what she would face in this family, in this world where she had to establish herself.
"I don't know, I don't know, Xiuer." Madam Wang finally burst into tears: "I only wish you were well, all my life... I only wish you were well."
"But the way you used to be... my heart... felt like it was being fried in oil every day. When Xiao Bao saw you, it was like seeing a living devil... he didn't even dare to cry out loud."
"Your brother and sister-in-law hate you, and they hate me even more... they hate me for spoiling you like this."
But today, the daughter with cold eyes, ruthless actions, and clear and logical speech is completely different from the daughter in my memory who only knew how to throw tantrums, act recklessly, and was lazy.
"Now you dare to stand in front of Xiaobao and fight those heartless bastards... You even know to give the baby the porridge. But I'm scared!"
"I'm afraid this is some new trick you're playing! I'm afraid you'll revert to your old ways in a couple of days! My heart... can't take it anymore!"
Lin Xiuer closed her eyes, a dull ache pressing down on her chest. It wasn't her memory, yet it weighed on her even more heavily than any memory she had ever known.
She knew the answer.
Wang's love was always for that daughter she imagined would one day become better.
But the spoiled Lin Xiuer had long since worn down this love through the daily torment, leaving only fear and a tiny, lingering hope.
For Wang, this "she" is like a dream that is too beautiful to believe. She longs for it, but she is even more afraid of waking up from it.
"Mother," Lin Xiuer's voice was still hoarse, but it lacked the fierceness of before, "The old Lin Xiuer is dead. She died when she fell from a tree and hit her head."
Upon hearing this, Wang's pupils suddenly contracted.
"The person in front of you now will no longer hit Xiaobao, will no longer steal things from home to gamble, and will no longer call you an old geezer."
Looking at Wang's tear-streaked face, she asked one last question, "Someone like this... I don't know who she is, but she wants to try to be a good daughter and a good mother..."
"Do you... want more?"
Wang's tears flowed once again.
She didn't answer whether she wanted it or not, but suddenly rushed over, her withered hands tightly grasping her daughter's fat, rough hands, and she cried, her whole body trembling.
It was as if she wanted to cry out all the grievances and fears she had accumulated over the past twenty years.
"My son... my poor son... I only beg you, please stop ruining yourself, please don't abandon your mother and Xiaobao again, okay?"
Lin Xiuer felt as if an invisible hand was gripping her heart. She nodded and clumsily wiped away Wang's tears. She couldn't promise anything, but silently patted her back to comfort her.
"Mom, don't be afraid of me. I've just died once and I've figured things out. I won't gamble anymore, let's live a good life together."
Wang nodded while wiping away her tears. A light finally returned to her cloudy eyes.
"Okay, good child, let's live a good life from now on. Mother has been looking forward to this day."
Xiao Bao, who had been quietly staying in the corner, slowly moved to the bedside and timidly held up the half-eaten bowl of porridge in front of Lin Xiuer.
His large eyes glanced at her quickly, then swiftly looked down. He didn't say anything, just held the bowl up.
Lin Xiuer paused for a moment, then took the bowl: "Xiao Bao, are you giving this to your mother?"
Xiao Bao didn't dare to look up, only nodding his little head slightly.
Lin Xiuer felt as if something had hit her chest, leaving her feeling both sore and tender.
"What a beast!" Lin Xiuer cursed the original owner of this body eight hundred times in her heart. The child is so young and so sensible; how could the former Lin Xiuer have brought herself to hit him?
The rim of the bowl still carried the warmth of the child's hand.
"Thank you, Xiaobao," she said softly.
Xiao Bao shook his head and hid behind Wang Shi again.
Lin Xiuer looked at the thin porridge in the bowl, so thin that you could count the grains of rice, and then looked at Wang Shi.
The old man was so thin that his cheekbones protruded, and his clothes hung loosely on his body. Looking at his own flabby body, he was out of breath even after walking a short distance.
She handed the bowl to Wang Shi: "Mother, please drink."
Wang quickly waved her hand: "No, no, no, you drink! You're weak and your foot is injured."
"Mother, look at me." She pointed to her bloated body, a self-deprecating smile on her face: "I'm so fat I can barely walk, and if I fall, I'll make a hole in the ground. This body of flesh will keep me going for days."
Wang became anxious: "You can't not eat! You just woke up, you need to eat something."
"If you really want to nourish yourself, you shouldn't be this fat." Lin Xiuer pushed the bowl forward again. "Mother, you have to believe me. If I want to live a good life in the future, I can't stay this fat."
"Walking is tiring, working is tiring, and people call me Fatty Lin. From today onwards, I have to slowly lose this weight."
"How can that be?" When Wang heard that she wanted to lose weight, she became really anxious. She then realized that she had overreacted and quickly softened her voice.
"Mom, Mom means that even if you're on a diet, you can't not eat."
Looking at Wang Shi's somewhat excited expression, Lin Xiuer sighed inwardly: This old lady really dotes on her daughter without thinking. Other families prefer sons to daughters, but she's practically a daughter slave.
"If you truly care about me, then drink this bowl of porridge. Only when you're healthier can you help me take care of Xiaobao and help me get through this difficult time."
The moonlight flowed quietly, and the dilapidated house was silent for a moment.
Looking into her daughter's eyes, then at the bowl of gruel, Wang finally took the bowl with trembling hands.
"Okay, Mother will drink." Her voice choked as she slowly drank from the bowl.
Lin Xiuer breathed a sigh of relief, watching Wang Shi finish the last mouthful of porridge, and only then did she feel the pain in her ankle become clearer.
"Mom, you take Xiaobao to sleep. I'll think of something tomorrow."
Madam Wang nodded, gave Lin Xiuer a deep look, and said, "Xiuer, I believe you."
After saying that, she picked up the empty bowl, took Xiaobao's hand, and left.
