"I am her husband."

Ping An interrupted him again, her tone as calm as if she were stating the weather, yet it carried an undeniable sense of possession and declaration.

He turned slightly to the side, shielding the still somewhat dazed Lin Xiuer even more tightly beside him.

"Husband?!" Chen Mingxuan looked at Ping An from head to toe as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world. He looked Ping An up and down, at his simple clothes and the shabby little cart behind him, and then at Lin Xiuer's face.

Her disdain and contempt were almost overflowing. "You? When did Xiuer get married again? How come I didn't know? Could it be that she just picked up some pretty boy on the street and..."

His words came to an abrupt end.

Because Ping An looked up and glanced at him again.

His eyes still held no intense emotion, not even the coldness he had shown when facing the Black Fish Gang.

But that seemingly insignificant glance froze all of Chen Mingxuan's unspoken sarcasm and doubts in his throat. At the same time, a chill crept up her spine.

The man before him was so calm and composed, even a little too calm, that Chen Mingxuan felt his throat go dry, and he couldn't utter a single more vulgar word.

That gaze held a unique sense of oppression, the kind that comes from someone in a superior position when facing an ant.

"Fine... fine then." Chen Mingxuan chuckled dryly, his imposing manner completely gone. Holding the silver in his arms, he glanced at Lin Xiuer, who was completely hidden by Ping An, with a complicated look in his eyes.

"Xiuer, since you... have someone to take care of you, then I'll keep this money for now. If... you ever have any difficulties in the future, you know where to find me!"

"She doesn't need it."

After saying that, Ping An didn't even look at Chen Mingxuan, who looked bewildered. He grabbed Lin Xiuer's hand, pushed the cart, and turned to leave.

Lin Xiuer was being pulled along by him, and she could only keep up by almost running.

She secretly glanced at his profile; his features were taut, his lips pressed into a straight line, and the hurt and sadness in his eyes were almost overflowing.

He exuded an overwhelming sense of grievance, completely devoid of the fierceness and composure he displayed when beating someone up at the market.

This reaction... Lin Xiuer's heart skipped a beat; he seemed genuinely angry.

This person clearly believed that Chen Mingxuan was her former lover, thinking that she treated them so badly because she was trying to get close to a rich young master.

Would a person with amnesia experience such strong emotional fluctuations regarding a suspected infidelity by a stranger's wife? This doesn't seem like a sign of memory recovery; it's more like an instinct.

She suddenly realized that her wild thoughts and careless confessions in the alley might have really hurt him.

He truly believed her earlier words about turning over a new leaf and treated her as his real wife. That's why he was upset about the appearance of another man and her secrets.

To be fair, although he was taking on the identity of a husband because of amnesia, he has been genuinely and sincerely devoted to this family, to her, and to Xiaobao these days.

This morning, they went all out to protect her and her stall.

Although for him, that might just be a minor exercise to loosen up his muscles.

And what about her? Out of fear and self-preservation, she always treated him as a ticking time bomb, a sugar daddy, and a troublesome person she had to deal with carefully.

I even suspected he was faking amnesia just now.

Lin Xiuer watched as he pursed his lips tightly, radiating a low-pressure aura, yet stubbornly pulled her forward.

The guilt in her heart grew wildly like vines, making it hard for her to breathe.

He looks really sad, what should I do?

She bit her lip, quickened her pace to walk alongside him, and gently tugged at his sleeve.

"Husband..." she said, her voice tinged with a hint of provocation and ingratiation, "Don't do this... I'm scared."

Ping An slowed his pace slightly, without turning around or shaking her off, but his jawline remained tense, indicating that he was really angry and sad.

Lin Xiuer pressed on, her tone even more sincere: "Husband, believe me, I really have nothing to do with that person. I swear, I'm not familiar with him at all."

"I used to be a jerk, I loved gambling, but I've never really liked anyone else, and I've never...done anything to betray you."

She said this with a bit of guilt, after all, she didn't know what the original owner of this body had done, but that was all she could say for now.

"Please believe me, okay? I know I was wrong."

Ping An finally slowed down and turned to look at her.

Those deep eyes were filled with complex emotions: lingering anger, clear sadness, and resentment.

He stared at her for a long while before finally speaking in a low, hoarse voice, "Okay, you just said you know you were wrong, so tell me, what exactly did you do wrong?"

Seeing that he was willing to speak, Lin Xiuer felt relieved and quickly followed his lead. But the truth was, she hadn't done anything wrong, and she had no idea what she had done wrong.

"Yes, yes, it's all my fault, I was wrong in every way! I shouldn't have kept it from you... um, all those awful things I did in the past."

"I shouldn't have made you angry. I promise I'll treat you even better from now on, better to Xiaobao, and better to Mom! I promise I have no ill intentions towards you, so please don't be angry with me anymore."

Her words carried a clear tone of coaxing, but lacked any genuine self-reflection.

Ping An understood. He gripped the handlebars tighter, his knuckles turning white, and stared at her intently.

"Fine, since you don't know what you did wrong, then let me ask you: as husband and wife, why does my wife always distance herself from me?"

"They sleep in separate beds, which is unlike the intimacy of a typical married couple. Why is that?"

Here we go again! Lin Xiuer was so flustered by the question that she almost wanted to look up to the sky and sigh.

Brother! That's because we're not really husband and wife! I was afraid you'd kill me after you regained your memories! I was even more afraid you already had a beautiful wife and family, and I'd become the other woman!

But could she say that? If she did, she'd probably be subjected to domestic violence right there on the spot!

She was so anxious that sweat beaded on her forehead and her eyes darted around. In the end, she had no choice but to use her own disgustingly fat body as a shield.

"Me? Me? Well, it's because I look too ugly right now!"

She pointed to her plump figure, her face slightly red, "Look at all this fat on me, I'm disgusted even by myself, how could I possibly... well, take off my clothes in front of you?"

"I just want to wait until I lose some weight and am not so fat before I can get close to my husband again."

"Enough!" Ping An interrupted her, her voice suddenly rising, the slight grievance in her eyes turning into anger at being treated perfunctorily.

He was clearly trying to talk about feelings with her, but she was just using her body to appease him.

"My wife, there's no need to use these stalling words to brush me off. You simply... you don't care about me at all!"

He spoke those last few words with a bittersweet tone, carrying an almost accusatory sadness.

They were already husband and wife, and he treated her as his dearest and most beloved person. What he cared about was whether she had feelings for him.

But what did she take him for?
