Chapter 84 Scaring Yourself
Inside the room, Jia Heiyu was still trying to maintain his composure and reprimand everyone, but he himself was inexplicably feeling a little uneasy.
He had heard rumors of the garden being haunted because it was next to a cemetery.
When they first occupied this place, they relied on their numbers and audacity, even boasting that they could sleep with a female ghost.
But now, his brothers are either injured or crippled, and the whole house is filled with them. The wound on his head is still throbbing with pain.
Add to that the howling wind, the wailing, and the clanking of chains that entered your ears, and the whole thing just felt a bit off.
The sound was too eerie; it didn't seem like something a human could make. But he was the boss, and he couldn't afford to collapse first.
"Tch, are you guys scared of that pretty boy? You're all so suspicious of every little rumor you hear?"
Despite his tough talk, Jia Heiyu lacked confidence, and the iron rod in his hand trembled violently.
The black iron rod was ice-cold, so he simply threw it aside.
My eyes involuntarily drifted towards the dark window. The window paper was mostly torn, with only a few tattered pieces trembling weakly in the wind.
"Shut your mouths, all of you! What nonsense are you spouting? You're just scaring yourselves! Anyone who says anything more..."
Before he could finish speaking, he saw Liu Er by the window, who suddenly shuddered as if he had been pricked by a needle.
His eyes were fixed on the hole, he was gasping for breath, and his whole body was trembling like a leaf.
"Yes, yes, yes..." Liu Er's teeth chattered, his voice broken, "Outside the wall...in the shadow of the tree, there is, there is a white, white shadow."
"It flashed again... I saw it! This time I really saw it!"
He really saw it this time; it wasn't an illusion. There really was something on that tree.
Liu Er suddenly turned his head, his face ashen in the dim light, his eyes filled with horror.
"Boss! There really is something outside!"
The already tense atmosphere in the room completely erupted into chaos!
"Damn it! It really is a ghost?!"
"I knew it! I knew this garden wasn't clean!"
"What do we do?! Are they trying to get in?!"
Fear spread like a plague, and the group huddled together, trembling with fear.
Dog Five lowered its head even further. Monkey Three began to cough uncontrollably again, each cough accompanied by a desperate tremor.
Jia Heiyu's temples throbbed; he was actually terrified! Those strange noises, the commotion on the roof, and now even Liu Er had witnessed it...
But he's the boss! If he backs down now, he's probably finished.
In this godforsaken place, once people's hearts are scattered, they can scare themselves to death without even needing ghosts to come!
He gritted his teeth, forcing himself to calm down, and forced a fierce expression onto his face: "All of you, shut the hell up!"
His gaze swept over the brothers who were huddled together in panic, and finally landed on Liu Er and Zhao Si, who were the least injured.
"Second brother! Fourth brother!" Jia Heiyu pointed at them, his voice carrying an unquestionable command.
"You two! Go out and see what the hell it is! Don't fucking hide in the house and scare yourselves!"
Liu Er and Zhao Si turned ashen-faced instantly.
"Boss, boss..." Liu Er's legs went weak, "Outside...outside..."
"Go when I tell you to!" Jia Heiyu roared, his eyes wide.
"Grab your weapons! Two people together, what are you afraid of! Maybe it's just some stray cat or dog, or... or maybe just some tattered rag being blown by the wind!"
He himself didn't quite believe what he was saying. Could stray cats and dogs make the sound of chains? Could rags cry?
But someone has to go out and find out what's going on. Staying cooped up inside will only kill them with fear.
Zhao Si glanced at Jia Heiyu's fierce yet threatening gaze and knew he couldn't escape it any longer, so he dared not disobey.
He shakily got up from the ground, grabbed a wooden stick to use as a crutch, and stood up, giving Liu Er a wink.
"Let's go... let's go, second brother, let's go take a look. The eldest brother is right, maybe... maybe you're just seeing things."
Liu Er was almost in tears, but under Jia Heiyu's piercing gaze and the sympathetic or urging looks of his other brothers, he could only shakily climb up, leaning against the wall.
The two supported each other, taking one step at a time, until they reached the creaking, broken wooden door.
My hand rested on the cold latch, yet it felt as heavy as a thousand pounds.
It was as if behind that door lay not a courtyard, but a bottomless abyss, hiding unknown terrors.
The door creaked open a crack, and a gust of night wind rushed in, making them shiver.
Outside the door was boundless darkness, with only the pale moonlight barely enough to make out the outlines of wild grass and ruins.
Zhao Si craned his neck and stared wide-eyed outwards, but could see nothing but swaying grass shadows.
Liu Er and Zhao Si, supporting each other, mustered their courage and slowly made their way out of the wooden door, heading towards the large tree on the west wall where the white shadow had just flashed.
The air outside carried the chill of the night, and the moonlight was even more bleak than what was seen inside, barely outlining the desolate landscape of the yard.
With every step I took, I felt a chill down my spine. Every clump of swaying withered grass and every twisted shadow of a tree seemed to conceal something.
Their hearts were pounding in their chests, almost audible as if they could hear each other's hearts pounding like drums.
Zhao Si gripped the wooden stick tightly, while Liu Er clenched his machete, his eyes wide and fixed on the west wall, where the white shadow had just flashed.
The two of them finally managed to get to the base of the west wall, leaning against the cold earthen wall as if that would make them a little safer.
Look up.
The branches of the camphor tree outside the wall stretched into the yard, and in the dim moonlight, it looked like something was really hanging between one of the lower branches.
It was white and light, swaying gently in the breeze.
Was it a tattered rag blown up by the wind? Or...?
Liu Er felt his throat go dry. He nudged Zhao Si beside him, his voice trembling, "Old, Fourth Brother...look...is that it?"
Zhao Si saw it too. He squinted, trying hard to make out the shape. It looked like a tattered piece of white fabric, or... something else?
Fear still lingered, but compared to the pure imagination inside the room, the actual object in front of him gave Liu Er a slight urge to find out what was going on.
What if it really is just a rag?
He took a deep breath and said to Zhao Si, "Fourth Brother, you...you keep an eye on the surroundings for me."
Zhao Si nodded nervously, scanning the dark courtyard warily.
Liu Er used his machete as a hook, closed his eyes, and silently prayed: "May our ancestors protect us, please don't let it be that thing..."
Then, he stretched out his machete, aimed at the white shadow swaying on the branch, and pulled hard with all his might!
"Whoosh—"
The white shadow was hooked down and landed lightly on the withered grass at their feet.
The two of them lowered their heads at the same time, holding their breath as they looked.
It was a piece of white gauze covered in dust and stains, with jagged edges, as if it had been torn from something and blown by the wind onto a tree.
The air seemed to freeze for a moment.
immediately--
"Hahaha!" Liu Er and Zhao Si suddenly burst into laughter, as if they had just escaped a disaster.
