The five-and-a-half-year-old baby doctor comes to the city to cure those who refuse to listen.
Chapter 42 Grandpa, I want to buy a street
The next morning, in the front hall.
Lin Jianguo held a bowl of millet porridge, looking at his grandson sitting opposite him, who was gnawing on half a braised pork knuckle with his mouth full of oil, and his eyelids twitched.
This kid, yesterday he tamed those little bastards from the Zhou, Qian, and Sun families, and even managed to turn that little tyrant from the Zhou family into his wood-chopping boy.
Now everyone in the capital knows that a five-year-old miracle doctor has come to Jishetang, who can turn stones into gold and whose words become law.
But looking at Chu Chen's engrossed eating, Lin Jianguo felt that he was still that little kid who couldn't live without braised pork knuckle.
After finishing the last bite of meat, Chu Chen threw the bone into the plate and picked up the towel next to him to wipe his greasy little hands.
He took a sip of soy milk to moisten his throat.
Grandpa.
"Yes," Lin Jianguo replied subconsciously.
"What's the name of the street in front of our Jishetang?" Chu Chen asked curiously.
Lin Jianguo was taken aback, then replied, "It's called Baicao Street. Most of the pharmacies in Beijing are located on this street."
"Oh." Chu Chen nodded, then asked, "Is this street state-owned or privately owned?"
"This..." Lin Jianguo thought for a moment, "In the early years, they were all private property. Later, they became public-private partnerships. Now, most of them belong to the state, but a small portion is still held by various companies."
Chu Chen licked his lips, seemingly savoring the taste of the braised pork knuckle.
He suddenly spoke, saying something that almost made Lin Jianguo's jaw drop.
"Grandpa, let's buy this street."
"Cough...cough cough!"
Lin Jianguo choked on a mouthful of millet porridge, coughing until his face turned red.
He put down his bowl, staring at Chu Chen in disbelief. "Chen'er, what...what did you say?"
"I said, let's buy the entire Baicao Street." Chu Chen repeated himself earnestly.
Lin Jianguo felt there was something wrong with his ears.
Buy an entire street? What does that even mean?
Baicao Street is one of the most prosperous areas in Beijing, with dozens of shops and dozens of families involved.
Let alone buying it all, even just buying one of the shops would drain an ordinary family's savings of several lifetimes.
"Chen'er, don't joke around, this... this isn't buying cabbage." Lin Jianguo's voice trembled slightly.
"I'm not joking." Chu Chen counted on his chubby fingers and began to calculate the accounts for Lin Jianguo.
"Look, Huichuntang has closed down, and now the largest shop on Baicao Street is empty."
"Our 'Life-Saving Power Pill' sold so well yesterday, other pharmacies must be envious and will try to steal it sooner or later."
"Instead of waiting for them to cause trouble, let's turn them all into our people first."
Chu Chen jumped off the chair, waved his little hand, and displayed a great leadership demeanor.
"We'll buy this street, plan it uniformly, and manage it uniformly. Anyone who wants to open a shop here can, but they'll have to follow our rules."
"From now on, this place will no longer be called Baicao Street, but 'Jishi Medicine Street'!"
"If we're going to do it, we'll be the first in China to sell only genuine medicine, not counterfeit medicine. For the poor, it's free; for the rich, it's double the price."
Chu Chen spoke, his eyes shining brightly.
"When the time comes, when people all over the world think of seeing a doctor or buying medicine, the first place they'll think of is here. What's that called? That's called brand effect!"
Lin Jianguo listened in a daze, his mouth agape.
Brand effect? Unified planning?
He couldn't understand any of the words, but he could sense the overwhelming ambition in his grandson's words.
"Grandpa, you need to broaden your perspective," Chu Chen said, patting Lin Jianguo's knee in a mature and old-fashioned manner.
Lin Jianguo: "..."
He felt that he had wasted the last sixty years of his life.
Just as Lin Jianguo was still in a state of out-of-body experience, a huge commotion suddenly broke out at the entrance of Jishetang.
"Make way! Make way! Be careful not to bump into anything!"
"Slow down! Move it inwards! Raise it a little here!"
Wang Dequan scrambled in from outside, his face a mixture of fear and excitement.
"Old...Old man! Young master! They're...coming!"
"What's here?" Lin Jianguo frowned.
Before the words were even finished, a huge crane roared as it slowly lifted a massive object covered in a white tarpaulin from a large truck, carried it over the wall of Jishetang, and lowered it into the open space in the backyard.
The commotion was even more exaggerated than when Commander Zhou sent military vehicles last time.
The neighbors all crowded around the door, craning their necks to look inside.
"My God! What is that? Is the Lin family building a house?"
"It doesn't look like it at all; it looks like a big lump of iron."
Liu Zhen, wearing a faded white lab coat, jumped out of the truck cab, his face filled with fervent admiration, and ran to Chu Chen.
He knelt down with a thud, his voice trembling with tears.
"Sir! Your disciple has not failed you! I have obtained the computed tomography scanner you requested!"
Chu Chen nodded in satisfaction, took out a White Rabbit milk candy from his pocket, unwrapped it, and stuffed it into Liu Zhen's mouth.
"You've worked hard, get up."
With a candy in his mouth and tears welling up in his eyes, Liu Zhen stood up, too excited to speak.
This second-hand computed tomography scanner, discarded by a hospital abroad, cost him half a lifetime's savings and left him with a mountain of favors owed to others.
But he felt it was worth it!
If the master says it's useful, then it must be a divine object!
Lin Jianguo and Wang Dequan were completely dumbfounded when they saw the huge white thing that had been carefully placed in the backyard and occupied half of the yard.
"Dr. Liu... what is this?" Lin Jianguo stammered.
"Mr. Lin, this is the miraculous device the master spoke of, capable of seeing through the human body!" Liu Zhen explained enthusiastically. "What's it called... a computed tomography (CT) scanner! Yes, a computed tomography (CT) scanner!"
Chu Chen walked around the large white circle once, as if he were inspecting his own territory.
He reached out his little hand and tapped on the cold metal casing.
"It's alright, not too old."
He said to Lin Jianguo, who was equally bewildered, "Grandpa, clear out that cluttered side room next to the west wing and stuff it in."
Then he said to Liu Zhen, "Find a few electricians and connect the wires for me according to this diagram."
Chu Chen pulled out a crookedly drawn circuit diagram from somewhere, with various strange symbols marked on it in red and blue pencils.
No one could understand it, but Liu Zhen accepted the blueprints with the utmost respect, as if receiving an imperial edict.
It took a whole afternoon to figure it out.
The enormous computed tomography scanner was finally settled into a specially vacated side room.
Chu Chen chased everyone out, leaving only Lin Jianguo and Liu Zhen.
He closed the door and walked to the machine.
He didn't touch the complicated buttons, but instead took out the black wooden box containing the Big Dipper needle from his pocket.
He picked up the shortest black needle and gently inserted it into an inconspicuous interface on the machine's main unit.
An almost invisible golden light followed the black needle and disappeared deep into the machine.
Chu Chen pulled out the needle and clapped his hands.
"alright."
Lin Jianguo and Liu Zhen didn't notice any changes at all; they only felt that the room seemed colder than before.
Chu Chen walked to the corner of the wall and picked up the calming jade that had been placed on the soft couch.
Inside that jade pendant lay his mother, Lin Xiu, who was in a state of suspended animation.
He carefully placed the jade pendant on the transfer bed of the computed tomography scanner.
"Sir, what's wrong with you...?" Liu Zhen asked, puzzled.
"Give my mother a full medical checkup," Chu Chen said calmly.
He walked to the control panel, placed his little feet on the stool, stretched out his little hands, and skillfully began to type on the keyboard.
The machine emitted a slight hum.
The teleportation bed, carrying the Mind-Stabilizing Jade, was slowly sent into the huge white ring.
The screen in front of the control panel lit up.
Lin Jianguo and Liu Zhen went over to take a look and were both stunned.
What was displayed on the screen was not a black-and-white image of human bones or internal organs at all.
It was a dazzling galaxy.
Countless lines, some bright and some dark, radiating a soft glow, intertwine to form a blurry human silhouette.
At the heart of that human-shaped outline, a single golden spot, brighter than all the other lines, shone as brightly as the sun.
Golden energies extended from the light spots, like a spider web, firmly locking in the fading light.
"This...this is..." Liu Zhen gurgled as he pointed at the screen, his whole body trembling.
"This is my mother's lifeline," Chu Chen said softly.
"That golden dot was the life-saving needle I inserted. It was protecting my mother's last bit of life essence."
Chu Chen's small hand gently swiped across the screen.
He pointed to the golden sun.
"But look."
Lin Jianguo and Liu Zhen looked in the direction he was pointing.
They discovered that the dazzling golden sun was dimming at a visible rate.
The golden energy lines connecting it also began to show signs of breaking.
Lin Jianguo's heart clenched instantly. "Chen'er, what... what's going on?"
"We're running out of energy." Chu Chen's voice was devoid of any emotion.
"Grandpa, the Big Dipper Life-Sustaining Needle needs spiritual energy to be maintained."
"The jade pendant I got from Grandpa Zhou has almost run out of spiritual energy."
He paused, turned his head, and looked at Lin Jianguo, whose face was full of tension.
"If we don't find a way to replenish her energy, Mom... will really be gone."
Lin Jianguo felt a sudden darkness before his eyes, his body swayed, and he almost fell.
"Then...what should we do? Where can we find this spiritual energy you mentioned?"
Chu Chen shifted his gaze from the screen to the window.
His gaze pierced through the courtyard wall, looking towards the most prosperous and ancient place in the capital.
He turned around, looked at Lin Jianguo, and asked in a childish voice.
"Grandpa, where is the largest antique street in Beijing?"
