Chapter 25 Night Escape to Wolf Mountain for Temporary Shelter

The hunter's abandoned cabin huddled in the deepening twilight, like a wounded, silent beast. The mountain wind howled through the cracks in the broken doors and windows, carrying the biting chill of the late autumn forest and a faint, lingering scent of blood.

Lin Feng leaned against the cold earthen wall, his eyes closed, his chest rising and falling slightly. The wound on his left arm had been carefully bandaged by A Yue, and the strong bitter smell of wound medicine seeped through the strips of cloth. The bleeding had stopped for the time being, but every breath he took brought sharp, stinging pains, reminding him of the danger of the brief battle during the day.

Yun Yao sat on a rotten log not far from him, her arms wrapped around her knees, burying her face in her arms. Her coarse cloth dress was covered in dust, bits of grass, and a few inconspicuous dark red stains—Lin Feng's blood, smeared on her when she helped him up. Her body trembled slightly, whether from the cold or from the lingering fear of the sudden, near-miss killing earlier that day. But whenever she looked up at Lin Feng, her eyes, always clear as autumn water, held not only lingering fear but also an indescribable shock, and a quiet, growing dependence that she herself wasn't fully aware of.

This man, in the instant the crossbow bolts pierced the air, shielded the carriage from death with his body; in a desperate situation where he was outnumbered and outmatched, he tore through the encirclement with almost ruthless precision and ferocity; even as blood gushed forth and excruciating pain pierced his heart, he calmly directed the search for a way out. He was like a mountain that suddenly rose from the ground, silent, yet protecting her from the fiercest storms.

In another corner of the cabin, A-Yue was squatting on the ground, carefully wiping her short-handled hunting fork with a rag dipped in the little water left in her water pouch. Her movements were meticulous, her dusty face expressionless, as if she were wiping not a weapon that had just tasted blood, but an ordinary farm tool. Only occasionally, when she lifted her eyelids to glance towards the doors and windows, did her eyes sharpen like unsheathed knives, alert to every suspicious movement outside.

"Will they... come after us?" Yun Yao's voice was soft, with a barely perceptible tremor, breaking the suffocating silence in the room. She was asking Lin Feng, but her gaze involuntarily drifted to the broken wooden doorway swaying slightly in the wind.

Lin Feng slowly opened his eyes, his gaze as calm as a deep pool. "Yes," he answered without hesitation. "Four died, two escaped. The Di Rong people won't suffer that loss. Besides, they know our general direction."

A-Yue stopped wiping, looked up at Lin Feng, and said in a low, hoarse voice, "There are lights in the distance, moving this way from three directions, about two miles away. The number of people is unclear, but there are more than before." She had quietly gone out to investigate while Lin Feng was bandaging her wounds and brought back the worst news.

Yun Yao's body trembled violently, her knuckles turning slightly white from the force of her gripping her knees. Encirclement from three directions...

"We can't stay here any longer." Lin Feng tried to stand up, but the sharp pain in his left arm made him hesitate. A Yue immediately got up and silently supported his other, uninjured arm. With her help, Lin Feng straightened up and scanned the room. "This wooden house is too conspicuous. Once it's surrounded, it's a death trap. We have to leave immediately and slip out through the gaps before they completely close in."

Lin Feng walked to Uncle Fu's side, knelt down on one knee, checked his pulse, and then examined his pupils. "We must leave. Staying here means certain death. Leaving offers a sliver of hope." He raised his head, looking at Yun Yao with unwavering determination. "Find something to secure Uncle Fu to my back. A-Yue, clean up the traces of our arrival and the area outside, trying to mislead as much as possible. Then move the firewood by the door to create the illusion that we left through the back window."

His instructions were clear and decisive, instantly dispelling Yun Yao's hesitation and fear. In dire straits, a strong leader is the source of everyone's confidence.

"Yes!" Yun Yao replied immediately and began searching for a usable rope inside the house. A Yue turned and went out, like a ghost in the night, to begin setting up a feint.

A-Yue quickly returned and whispered, "The traces have been dealt with, and the fake back window has been created. The mule cart is in that ditch over there; it's been covered with branches. The pursuers' firelight is getting closer; the nearest one is less than a mile and a half from here, and there are dogs."

Hunting dogs! Yun Yao's heart sank again.

"Let's go!" Lin Feng didn't hesitate any longer and took the lead towards the denser, almost pathless forest behind the cabin. He didn't choose the faint path he had come from, nor did he follow the false direction arranged by A-Yue. Instead, he climbed a steep, rocky hillside behind the cabin. The forest there was even deeper and the terrain more complex, making it the best choice to shake off the pursuers, but it also meant that the road ahead would be even more difficult.

A-Yue immediately followed, holding the fork to cover their retreat. Yun Yao gritted her teeth, lifted her skirt which was torn by thorns, and followed Lin Feng with uneven steps.

The real test has only just begun.

After walking for about an hour, a sudden, loud, and intense barking of dogs erupted from the distant mountains behind us! The sounds echoed through the silent valley, carrying the excitement and ferocity of someone who had spotted prey. This was followed by a few short, sharp whistles and shouts, typical of humans.

The pursuers, with their hounds, are catching up! And getting closer and closer! In this environment, the hounds' noses are an unbeatable tracking weapon.

Lin Feng's heart sank. He stopped and listened intently. ...The hunting dogs were completely unaffected by the crude camouflage.

"This way!" Lin Feng made a quick decision, changing direction and heading towards a lower-lying area on the left where the faint sound of flowing water could be heard. A wave of cold, damp air hit him, and soon a mountain stream, not very wide but with a rather rapid current, appeared before him. The water shimmered faintly in the darkness, its rushing sound drowning out all other noises.

"Go down to the river and swim upstream!" Lin Feng shouted, his voice filled with unwavering determination. He knew that the icy stream was the only chance he could use to distract the hunting dogs and buy them time.

"Ah—!" The icy cold stream almost made Yun Yao scream. She quickly covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face. It wasn't just ordinary cold; it was a chill that seemed to freeze her bones and congeal her blood. She trembled violently, almost unable to stand.

A steady, strong hand reached out just in time and grasped her cold, trembling wrist. It was Lin Feng. He turned around and glanced at her in the darkness. Although he couldn't see her expression, the undeniable strength and warmth emanating from that hand was like a faint electric current, instantly dispelling some of the chill and fear.

"Hold on tight, follow me, don't let go." Lin Feng's voice was low, but it clearly reached her ears.

Yun Yao nodded vigorously, her icy fingers gripping Lin Feng's wrist tightly, as if it were the only piece of driftwood in the darkness.

Ah Yue also silently stepped into the water, walking at the very back.

The sound of water masked their footsteps and panting, temporarily blocking out the approaching barking of dogs behind them. But the drain on their strength and the chill intensified exponentially. Lin Feng, carrying someone on his back, had his injured left arm submerged in the cold water; the pain had become numb, replaced by a deeper, chilling cold that seemed to freeze their very soul. Yun Yao's trembling grew more violent, her lips turning purple, barely holding on thanks to the support she clung to Lin Feng's wrist and a will to not be a burden to others. A Yue's breathing also became noticeably heavier.

After wading through the icy stream for an unknown amount of time, a small waterfall appeared ahead. The water cascaded down a cliff several meters high, forming a deep pool below. On one side of the waterfall, the cliff face recessed inward, forming a relatively dry, narrow platform, half-hidden by dense vines and the curtain of water.

"Go up there, we can hide there," Lin Feng said breathlessly, pointing to the depression.

This sunken platform was only a few feet square, with dry sand and gravel on the ground and a protruding rock wall overhead. The waterfall roared down a few steps away, the spray carrying a damp mist that perfectly blocked out the outside view and most of the noise. For now, it was safe.

Cold, exhaustion, pain, lingering fear... a flood of emotions overwhelmed them. But at least they were alive, and had temporarily escaped their pursuers.

"Wring out the wet clothes and wrap them as tightly as possible. Don't light a fire; we must stay up until dawn." Lin Feng's voice rang out again, hoarse and tired, yet still reassuringly calm.

Yun Yao did as instructed, turning her back and using her last bit of strength to wring out her soaked, heavy dress. The cold fabric clung to her skin, bringing an even deeper chill. She curled up and buried her face in her knees.

Lin Feng also took off his soaking wet coat, wrung it out, and put it back on. The cold, wet clothes clung to his body, chilling him to the bone, but he silently endured it. He glanced at Yun Yao, who was almost frozen stiff, paused for a moment, and then gently covered her with his half-dry old fur coat.

Yun Yao trembled, raised her tear-filled face, and looked at Lin Feng. His expression was obscured in the darkness, but his eyes remained calm, reflecting the faint light of the waterfall.

"Lin...Brave Lin, you..." Her voice choked with emotion.

"Put it on, you can't handle it." Lin Feng interrupted her, his tone leaving no room for argument. Then he closed his eyes and began to regulate his breathing to recover his strength.

Yun Yao clutched the fur coat, still warm from Lin Feng's body, tightly. A faint warmth spread through her icy body, flowing into the coldest part of her heart. She buried her face in the fur, which smelled of sweat and a faint scent of blood, and tears finally streamed down her face silently.

A-Yue glanced at them, remaining silent, but moved her body closer to the wind to block more of the cold air coming in.

As the first rays of sunlight struggled to pierce through the waterfall's mist and illuminate the small shelter, Lin Feng stretched his limbs, which were stiff from the cold, and felt a dull pain in the wound on his left arm. He woke Yun Yao and A Yue.

"Eat something, we're ready to go." Lin Feng took out some dry biscuits that had been soaked in water and then dried in the shade, making them hard and gave them to Yun Yao and A Yue. He only ate a small bite himself, leaving most of the rest for Yun Yao and A Yue, especially the weak Yun Yao.

Yun Yao looked at the half-eaten, cold, hard pancake in her hand, then at Lin Feng's pale face and chapped lips, and felt a pang of sorrow in her heart. She didn't refuse, taking small bites and chewing hard, as if she were eating not food, but the courage and strength to live.
