Chapter 26 A Narrow Escape: Encounter with the Herbalist
Morning light filtered through the branches and leaves, dappling the forest floor. The fallen leaves, soaked by the night rain, were slippery. Lin Feng carried Uncle Fu on his back, each step taken with utmost care. The wound on his left arm felt like countless red-hot needles pricking him. His jaw clenched tightly, the veins on his forehead throbbed, and cold sweat trickled down his jawline.
Yun Yao, who was following closely behind, staggered, her face as white as paper, but she stared intently at Lin Feng's back. Seeing him sway, she immediately took a half step forward: "Brave Lin, are you feeling unwell?"
Lin Feng waved his hand, his voice hoarse as if it had been sanded: "It's okay, keep up."
The mountain wind howled, making it hard to stand. Lin Feng's breathing became more and more rapid, and Uncle Fu on his back seemed to grow heavier and heavier, making his chest feel suffocated, and his vision began to blur.
"Brave Lin!" Yun Yao finally couldn't hold back any longer and rushed forward to support his swaying body. Her fingertips had barely touched his clothes when she recoiled from the heat. "You have a fever! And a very high one!"
Lin Feng tried to push her away and keep walking, but his body wouldn't obey him, his legs went weak, and he almost fell.
Yun Yao cried out in alarm, using all her strength to support him, her eyes instantly reddening: "We can't go any further! We really can't go any further!"
Upon hearing the sound, A-Yue immediately turned back, took Uncle Fu from Lin Feng's back, and supported Lin Feng's other side, saying in a deep voice, "We must find a place to treat his wounds; he can't hold on any longer."
Lin Feng leaned against the tree trunk, his chest heaving violently, each breath hot with the heat of his lungs. He trembled as he tore off the bandage on his left arm; the bandage was already soaked with pus and blood, emitting a foul odor. The wound was red and swollen, its edges already beginning to fester.
"This...how could this happen..." Yun Yao burst into tears the moment she saw the wound. She frantically took out her water pouch, trying to clean the wound, but after pouring for a long time, she could only get a few drops of water out. "The water's gone...our water's gone..."
Suddenly, A-Yue spoke up: "You all wait here, don't move, don't make a sound. I'll go find medicine and water."
"No!" Lin Feng grabbed her wrist suddenly, his strength not great, but with an undeniable determination. "It's too dangerous. You can't go alone!"
A-Yue pried his hands away, her eyes calm yet resolute: "You're in more danger than outside. If you die, none of us will survive. I recognize some herbs and know where the water is; I'll be back soon."
After saying that, she picked up the hunting fork, and in a flash, she disappeared into the dense forest, leaving only a blur.
"Ah Yue..." Yun Yao reached out, but only grasped a handful of cold air. She looked at Lin Feng, who was leaning against a tree, his consciousness fading, and then at the unconscious Uncle Fu. A huge panic gripped her instantly, making her tremble all over. She had never felt so helpless. In this dangerous deep mountain, the only person who could protect them had fallen, and another had gone to search for a faint hope, leaving her alone as a woman, guarding two seriously injured people.
Lin Feng's consciousness oscillated between semi-consciousness and other sensations. One moment he felt like he was soaking in an ice cellar, shivering from the cold, and the next he felt like he had been thrown into a fire, burning with excruciating pain. The wound on his left arm felt like countless insects were gnawing at it, the pain almost making him faint.
"Water..." he murmured unconsciously, his voice as faint as a mosquito's buzz.
Yun Yao immediately leaned over, brought the water pouch to his mouth, and carefully fed him the last few drops of water.
Time passed second by second, each second feeling like torture.
Suddenly, a soft rustling sound came from the bushes to the side.
Yun Yao's heart leaped into her throat. She gripped the dagger tightly, her body tense: "Who?"
The bushes rustled, and a figure emerged. It wasn't A-Yue, but an old man. The old man wore a faded, patched hempen jacket, carried a large bamboo basket on his back, and leaned on a well-worn old rattan cane. His hair and beard were all white, his face was thin, but his eyes were surprisingly clear. He looked to be in his sixties or seventies, but his steps were very steady, unlike any ordinary old man in the mountains.
The old man's gaze lingered on Lin Feng's wound for a moment, then swept over Yun Yao's tightly gripped dagger and the wariness on her face. A hint of surprise flashed in his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure: "Outsider? In trouble?"
Yun Yao pursed her lips, not daring to say more, but only whispered, "Old man, we are fleeing from disaster. My elder brother is injured and has a fever, so he can't walk and we are resting here temporarily. May I ask who you are, old man?"
The old man didn't answer her question. He walked over to Lin Feng, squatted down, and examined his wound. His brows furrowed. "An arrow wound? It's been soaked in dirty water and is already festering. If this drags on any longer, you won't be able to save this arm, and your life will be in danger."
"What should we do? We have no medicine and no water..." Yun Yao's voice was choked with sobs as she looked helplessly at the old man.
The old man stood up, looked around, sniffed the air, and suddenly pointed in the direction Ah Yue had left: "Wasn't there another girl going that way just now?"
Yun Yao's heart leaped into her throat, and she gripped the dagger even tighter. She neither dared to admit nor deny it, but simply watched him warily.
The old man smiled and didn't press further. He remained silent for a moment, as if weighing something, before finally looking at Yun Yao: "Young lady, if you trust this old man, then bring your elder brother with me. There's a clean and secluded cave not far ahead where I rest while gathering herbs. Your elder brother's injury can't be delayed, and your companion knows the way; he'll find us."
Yun Yao was stunned. Follow a strange old man? But seeing Lin Feng's increasingly painful appearance, the increasing sweat on his forehead, and his weaker breathing, her heart clenched. If he stayed here, Lin Feng wouldn't last long; following the old man might offer a glimmer of hope.
"Brother Lin..." Yun Yao's eyes welled up with tears as she looked at Lin Feng's pained expression. She took a deep breath and looked at the old man, "Alright, we'll go with you! Thank you for your help, sir!"
The old man nodded, turned around, and used his cane to push aside a vine, revealing a narrow crevice in the mountainside, just wide enough for one person to pass through: "Stay close to me."
Yun Yao gritted her teeth and half-dragged, half-carried Lin Feng into the crevice. The crevice was narrow and damp, requiring them to bend over to pass through. After walking for about ten zhang, the space suddenly opened up before them, revealing a cave about the size of two or three houses. Sunlight shone through cracks in the ceiling, the ground was covered with dry grass, and in one corner were piles of pottery jars, bamboo tubes, and a stone stove. A faint scent of herbs filled the air.
"This is where I rest while gathering herbs; it's very safe here," the old man said, helping to settle Lin Feng on the dry grass before turning and leaving. A short while later, he carried Uncle Fu back in all by himself.
Yun Yao stared in disbelief: "Old man, your strength..."
The old man waved his hand without saying anything, walked to the bamboo basket, and rummaged through it to find some herbs and water: "Girl, boil some water."
Yun Yao quickly agreed and hurriedly started a fire.
The old man carefully cleaned Lin Feng's wound with lukewarm water, crushed several herbs into a paste, carefully applied it to the wound, and then bandaged it with a clean, steamed cloth.
Then, he brewed a bowl of herbal soup and handed it to Yun Yao: "Feed him this, be careful it's hot."
Yun Yao took the bowl of medicine, blew on it to cool it down, and carefully fed it to Lin Feng. The medicine was extremely bitter, and Lin Feng instinctively resisted, spitting it out as soon as it was fed to him, splashing Yun Yao's hand with it.
"Brother Lin, be good, you'll feel better after drinking the medicine..." Yun Yao didn't give up. She wiped his mouth clean with a cloth, scooped up another spoonful of medicine, and coaxed him gently, again and again, until she finally fed him most of the bowl of medicine.
After doing all this, Yun Yao collapsed to the ground, her forehead covered in sweat.
The old man looked at her and suddenly said, "You're not ordinary refugees, are you? And those chasing you aren't ordinary bandits either."
Yun Yao stiffened, looked up at the old man, her eyes full of wariness.
The old man smiled and waved his hand, "I don't need to ask about these things. I've seen a lot in the mountains. Just focus on recovering. My surname is Qin, and everyone in the village calls me Qin the Herbalist. I make a living by collecting herbs."
"Old Master Qin, thank you so much for saving my life." Yun Yao stood up, bowed deeply to Qin Yaosou, her eyes red-rimmed, "We will never forget your great kindness."
Qin Yaosou nodded slightly, walked to the cave entrance, sat down, and closed his eyes to rest.
Silence returned to the cave, broken only by the crackling of the fire and Lin Feng's heavy breathing. Yun Yao stayed by Lin Feng's side, holding his burning right hand, silently praying that he would recover quickly.
After an unknown amount of time, a slight rustling came from the vines at the cave entrance. The vines were gently parted, and A-Yue's figure slipped in. She had several new wounds on her face and hands, two bamboo tubes filled with water hung from her waist, and she was carrying a package wrapped in leaves in her hand.
"Ah Yue!" Yun Yao exclaimed in surprise.
But A-Yue remained vigilant. She spotted Qin Yaosou sitting at the cave entrance and immediately raised her hunting fork, her eyes sharp as knives: "Who are you?"
"Don't do it!" Yun Yao rushed over and grabbed her. "It was Old Man Qin who saved us! He treated Brother Lin's wounds and even brewed medicine!"
A-Yue paused, her gaze darting between Qin Yaosou and Lin Feng, then sniffing the medicinal scent in the air before her tense expression relaxed slightly. She put down the hunting fork, walked to Lin Feng's side, carefully examined his wounds, and whispered to Yun Yao, "How is he?"
"Old Master Qin said the poison has entered his blood. Whether he can pull through after taking the medicine depends on him," Yun Yao said, her voice choked with sobs.
A-Yue remained silent, then unwrapped the leaf-wrapped package. Inside were several medicinal herbs and roots still covered in soil, along with some wild fruits. She placed these items in front of Qin Yaosou: "Can these herbs be used?"
Old Qin opened his eyes, looked at the herbs on the ground, and a hint of approval flashed in his eyes: "Young lady, you have a good eye. These herbs are perfect for clearing internal heat and removing residual toxins, and they're old enough too. You know herbs?"
"I recognize a little," A-Yue whispered.
Qin Yaosou nodded and began treating the wound with herbs. Yun Yao looked at the clean water and herbs that A Yue had brought back, and then at Lin Feng's breathing, which was gradually becoming more stable. Her heart, which had been hanging in suspense, finally eased a little. But she knew that this was only temporary peace. The danger outside the cave had not yet been eliminated, and Lin Feng's injuries had not yet healed. The real test had just begun.
