The conference room on the top floor of the Su Group building was filled with smoke.

The air purifier was running at full speed, but it just couldn't get rid of the burnt smell that was a mixture of Cuban cigars and aged Pu'er tea.

On either side of the long mahogany conference table sat seven or eight men, all over fifty years old, their faces as somber as dark clouds before a storm.

This was clearly a meeting held in southern Jiangsu.

Su Nan stood at the end of the table, her waist bent at a ninety-degree angle.

"My fellow uncles, it was my fault for not choosing the right people."

His voice was hoarse, carrying just the right amount of exhaustion and regret. "I never imagined that Wang Kai would create so many messes behind my back. As the person in charge of the project, I am to blame."

An ashtray flew past his ear and smashed against the wall behind him with a loud crash, shattering glass everywhere.

The one who threw the things was Director Zhang, a veteran of the group, who was now so angry that his beard was trembling: "Misjudging people? Su Nan, that's your college classmate! You were the one who bypassed the HR department's recruitment process and just pushed him in! Now the books are down by more than 20 million, and the qualifications for the land reclamation project may be re-examined by the National Development and Reform Commission, and you think you can just say you're not entirely to blame?"

Su Nan didn't dodge, and didn't even blink.

He knew what those old guys wanted.

Money can be earned back, but they need to take back their pride and control.

"I've already called the police." Su Nan straightened up, unbuttoned his suit jacket, and took a document out of his briefcase. "This is my indictment against Wang Kai, and... my resignation."

The meeting room fell silent instantly, with only the rustling sound of papers scratching against the table.

The directors exchanged bewildered glances, clearly not expecting Su Nan to cut so ruthlessly, even sacrificing their own interests.

"Given the current situation, I am no longer suitable to serve as the person in charge of the land reclamation project." Su Nan pushed his resignation letter to the center of the table, his gaze sincere. "I will cooperate with the group's audit department to conduct a thorough investigation until all the holes are plugged. As for the position of person in charge, I suggest that Vice President Liu Zhen temporarily act as the person in charge. He is a long-time member of the Su family, familiar with the business, and the board of directors trusts him."

This tactic of retreating to advance was brilliantly executed.

Director Zhang's expression softened somewhat, and he lit another cigarette: "Since you have this attitude, then let's leave it at that for now. But Su Nan, let me make this clear from the start: if it turns out that this matter has nothing to do with you..."

"If it concerns me, you uncles and elders don't need to lift a finger; I'll pack my bags and get out of the Su family myself," Su Nan said resolutely.

The meeting adjourned.

The old guys left one after another. Liu Zhen was the last to leave. He gave Su Nan a meaningful look, didn't say anything, just nodded, and left with the stack of documents.

The moment the door closed, the humility and regret on Su Nan's face seemed to have been erased, leaving only a chilling expression.

He walked to the window, ripped off his tie, and threw it hard to the ground.

"Old man..." he gritted his teeth, staring at the ant-like traffic below, "Once I catch my breath, I'll swallow all the shares you hold sooner or later."

But he knew that now was not the time to act rashly.

It's a done deal that Wang Kai, that idiot, will go in, but this is just the first step.

That so-called indictment was just a smokescreen.

The real problem isn't in the finance department, nor is it with Wang Kai.

In his safe.

Inside were two handwritten ledgers, and a hard drive containing recordings of all the shady transactions over the past few years.

That was his trump card to save his life, and also a handle he would use to control these old directors in the future.

But this thing is a double-edged sword. Once the audit department finds it, it won't be as simple as just getting out of the Su family; he'll be locked up for life.

The office is definitely not safe anymore.

Now that Liu Zhen has taken over the project, he will definitely bring people to seal off the office first thing tomorrow morning.

We have to get those things out tonight.

……

As night deepens, the city lights begin to twinkle.

Bai Jingyou sat on his own terrace, holding an iced Americano in his hand, with surveillance footage of the area surrounding the Su Group displayed on the tablet in front of him.

"Young master, the bait has been thrown in."

On the other end of the phone, Chen Mo's voice was clear in the night wind, "I just got word from Liu Zhen that Su Nan has sent all his secretaries and assistants away. We've also informed the security department that the two new staff members on duty tonight aren't very vigilant. We've also tampered with the monitoring room; there will be a ten-minute 'maintenance' period."

"He won't destroy the evidence." Bai Jingyou shook the ice cubes in his glass, watching them bounce against the sides. "Su Nan is the kind of person who is extremely arrogant yet extremely insecure. Those ledgers are his tools for controlling others, and also evidence for him to prove his abilities to his dictatorial father. He won't destroy them unless absolutely necessary."

People always die because of their own greed and wishful thinking.

Su Nan thought that as long as he changed his hiding place, he could deceive everyone and then bring it out to turn the tables once the storm had passed.

Unfortunately, he didn't know that the rules of this game had already changed.

"Have Liu Zhen get ready." Bai Jingyou took a sip of coffee, the bitter taste spreading on his tongue. "Since President Su likes to play night raids, then we'll give him an extra night shift."

"clear."

……

Two o'clock in the morning.

The Su Group building was pitch black, with only the emergency indicator lights emitting a faint green glow.

Su Nan, dressed in an inconspicuous black tracksuit and wearing a baseball cap, sneaked back to his office like a thief.

The corridor was quiet; even the sound of the central air conditioning running could be heard clearly.

He locked the door, strode to the back of the huge landscape painting, and pressed the hidden switch.

The wall slowly slid away, revealing the German-made safe.

Fingerprints, iris scans, and that complex password known only to him.

With a soft click, the safe opened.

Su Nan breathed a sigh of relief, his palms were covered in cold sweat.

He quickly took out the several black folders and hard drives inside and stuffed them into a metal briefcase that had been prepared beforehand.

The box was heavy, but he felt exceptionally secure holding it in his hands.

This is his life and fortune.

As long as he has this thing, even if he is kicked out of the project department, he will have a way to make a comeback.

After all, those old directors weren't exactly clean either; there are records of it all.

Su Nan closed the safe, put the landscape painting back in its place, and took one last look around the office where he had sat for three years.

"Goodbye." He sneered. "When I come back, this place will belong to the Su family, and it will be mine alone."

Carrying his suitcase, he didn't take the usual executive elevator, but instead went through the fire escape and headed straight for the underground parking garage on the second basement level.

The hallway was dark, and the echoing footsteps in the empty space gave one the creeps.

Su Nan subconsciously quickened her pace, wanting nothing more than to get into the car and leave this awful place as soon as possible.

Pushing open the fire door, the air in the underground garage was damp and cold, with a smell of engine oil.

His car was parked in the VIP parking space in the very corner.

Su Nan walked over quickly and pressed the car key to unlock it.

The headlights flashed twice, leaving two beams of light in the darkness.

Just as he opened the car door, preparing to throw the suitcase into the passenger seat—

Snapped!

The lights in the entire underground parking garage suddenly turned on.

The blinding white light made Su Nan instinctively squint and raise his hand to shield his eyes.

"Mr. Su, it's so late, where are you headed?"

A familiar voice sounded from behind, carrying that nauseating bureaucratic tone and mockery.

Su Nan stiffened and slowly turned around.

Liu Zhen, dressed in a neat suit, pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses and stood less than five meters away from him.

Behind him stood five or six men in uniforms, their name tags reading "Group Inspection Department".

There were also two serious-looking security guards holding seals.

Su Nan's hand trembled, and the heavy metal box crashed onto the concrete floor with a loud bang, the sound exploding in the deathly silent garage, making people's eardrums ache.

"Liu... Liu Zhen?" Su Nan tried to remain calm, but her voice was trembling. "What are you doing here? I... I came back to get some personal belongings."

"Personal belongings?"

Liu Zhen laughed, a laugh like a cat watching a mouse crawl into a cage.

He stepped forward and kicked the metal box on the ground with his toe. "Mr. Su, these personal belongings are quite heavy. Director Zhang just called me and said he was worried that you might be upset about your resignation and take some company secrets that you shouldn't have taken with you. He specifically asked me to bring a colleague from the Supervision Department to help you check them."

"This is my stuff! You have no right to check!" Su Nan's face turned pale as he bent down to try and grab the box.

The two security guards moved even faster, grabbing his arms from the left and right.

"Let me go! I am the eldest young master of the Su family! How dare you touch me?" Su Nan struggled desperately, his hat fell off, his hair was disheveled, and his image as an elite young nobleman was completely torn apart, making him look like a shrew.

Liu Zhen took a piece of paper out of his pocket, slowly unfolded it, and held it up in front of Su Nan.

"Young Master Su, look carefully. This is an emergency asset freeze order signed by the board of directors overnight, with the signatures of more than two-thirds of the directors. According to the group's articles of association, every single thread connecting you to your body belongs to the company's assets until the matter is thoroughly investigated."

After Liu Zhen finished speaking, he waved his hand.

The inspectors immediately stepped forward, picked up the metal box in front of Su Nan, and affixed a glaring white seal to it.

Su Nan stared intently at the box, the light in his eyes gradually fading.

It’s over.

It's all over.

This is not a simple audit; it's like catching a turtle in a jar.

They knew he would come, and they knew what was in the box.

"It was you..." Su Nan suddenly looked up, staring intently at Liu Zhen, her teeth grinding together. "It was you, that traitor, who betrayed me! I've always treated you well!"

"What you say, Mr. Su," Liu Zhen said, his smile fading and his eyes turning cold. "A wise bird chooses a good tree to perch on. Besides, I'm doing this for the company's benefit. Take it away. Notify the legal department to send the box directly to the notary office for sealing."

The security guard dragged Su Nan toward the elevator.

Su Nan was carried like a dead dog, her toes dragging two gray streaks on the ground.

As he passed by Liu Zhen, he suddenly sprang up and tried to bite Liu Zhen's ear, but the security guard held his head down firmly.

"Baek Kyung-woo! Is it really Baek Kyung-woo?!"

Su Nan screamed hysterically, his voice echoing in the empty garage, "I know it was him! Tell him I didn't lose! I still have my dad! My dad won't abandon me!"

Liu Zhen straightened his askew sleeve, watched Su Nan being shoved into the elevator, and said calmly, "Your father's blood pressure is probably beyond his control right now."

……

Bai Family Study.

The image on the screen froze at the moment Liu Zhen picked up the suitcase.

Bai Jingyou closed his laptop and stretched.

Outside the window, the eastern sky was already turning a pale white.

The night passed quickly; some lost their future, while others gained leverage.

"Young Master, the Su family is probably in an uproar," Chen Mo sent a message.

"Frying is good," Bai Jingyou replied. "Only when the pot explodes can you see the rotten flesh inside clearly. Let's get ready. We're going to the Su Group tomorrow. As new shareholders, we should also go and offer our condolences to the injured Chairman Su."

He stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window.

The first rays of morning sunlight pierced through the clouds and shone on his face.

Southern Jiangsu is finished.

The contents of that box were enough to land him in jail for life, and enough to cause the Su Group's stock price to plummet by half.

But this is not enough.

Bai Jingyou looked at the outline of the Su Group building in the distance, a playful smile curving his lips.

Although the roots of the Su family tree are rotten, it hasn't fallen yet.

To eradicate it completely, we need to add fuel to the fire.

"If we're going to play, let's go big."

He muttered to himself, then turned and walked out of the study.
