"What, you two know each other?"
A glint of shrewdness flashed in the head housekeeper's eyes as she sized up the two women. Yu Lian thought to herself that her own family matters weren't over yet, and she couldn't let herself get caught up in this.
"Don't talk nonsense. I've only met you a few times. Did you say you knew me?"
For the next two seconds, Yu Lian watched helplessly as the little bamboo pole not far away blatantly lied. Actually, he didn't say anything, but after Yu Lian asked that question, he nodded without hesitation.
Even jumping into the Yellow River wouldn't clear her name. In her panic, Yu Lian looked at Uncle Chen: "Uncle Chen, tell me yourself, when did I ever know your relative? I'm a native of Yuncheng, I've never left Yuncheng, how could I know him?"
From Yu Lian's words, Uncle Chen indeed discerned a great deal of evidence proving that she did not know Xiao Jia. He said sternly, "Xiao Jia, don't talk nonsense. This is your first time leaving the village, how did you meet Comrade Yu? If I had known you were like this, I would never have agreed to let you in."
The first two times, He Lin was able to let reason guide him forward, but this time, with no identity and relatively free to act, he was tormented. Seeing his lover being reprimanded, he completely abandoned the principles he had previously adhered to.
"Uncle Chen, I'm lying to you. I'm not related to your family, nor am I from Erlang Mountain. I like Yu Lian, so I'm trying to get close to her. I know the He family doesn't like her, and once she has her child, I'll take her far away!"
That was an impulsive remark, but these words were spoken after careful consideration. For an insignificant worker to say such things seems absurd even to someone not directly involved. The foreman looked at Uncle Chen, her meaning clear. Seeing things spiraling out of control, Uncle Chen was determined to get Xiao Jia out of there, no matter what.
The head housekeeper glanced at Yu Lian, who was hiding behind her, said nothing, turned around, and closed the door. Yu Lian breathed a sigh of relief. She had always felt that Xiao Jia was acting strangely, and now she understood why. But the reason was hard for her to accept—how could someone fall in love with someone after only meeting them twice and exchanging a few words, and keep saying they liked him? Wasn't it just lust at first sight? Sure enough, men's words are never trustworthy.
Thinking back, Yu Lian felt a lingering fear, and her feet involuntarily retreated. Holding onto the handrail, she stepped back into her bedroom. Not long after, she heard commotion downstairs. As expected, the matriarch was very angry, but a little too angry. The sound of the two elderly people arguing downstairs was impossible for Yu Lian to ignore. Reluctantly, she had no choice but to bite the bullet and go downstairs. On the way, she caught a glimpse of a porcelain bowl that had been thrown at her, the one that had been confiscated from the dining table earlier.
"Chen Tianwang! Look what you've done! I'll tell the master right now and have you fired!"
Chen Bo's nephew was in the wrong. If this was true, he had voluntarily left the He family and hadn't intended to shirk responsibility, so he remained silent and kept his head down while the matriarch was angry. Yu Lian stood at the corner of the stairs, waiting until it was almost time before coming out to "mediate." This matriarch wasn't friendly, but she wasn't unreasonable.
"Forget it, go back and explain the whole thing yourself. As for that little bastard, get him as far away as possible. If I find out he's causing irreparable damage to the villa or the He family, you won't be able to pay for it even with ten lives."
The domineering mother-in-law was ruthless, but she spoke the absolute truth. Yu Lian herself was also afraid—the thought of waking up one day to find a man standing next to her bed was enough to scare her to death. However, her intuition told her that this matter was far more complicated than it seemed.
The farce ended two days later. Because of this incident, the people taking care of Yu Lian were temporarily replaced. She had thought that once the previous two returned, her noise would be tolerable, at least she would have some relative freedom. But the plans changed abruptly, catching Yu Lian completely off guard—these two had truly inherited the skills of the domineering matriarch, doing everything meticulously and methodically, leaving her no chance to act alone. Even the hard-won opportunity to go home to visit her family required someone to accompany her and protect her throughout.
According to Uncle Chen's relay, He Lin's parents became increasingly wary after this incident. That person ran away when no one was looking, possibly due to a past business feud. The suddenness of it all, the fact that no one recognized him, and the insistence on taking Yu Lian with him—it was all an attempt to cut off the He family's lineage. The He family was capable of investigating people; otherwise, they would have cleared Yu Lian's name in two days. Furthermore, the young man's identity was so shrouded in mystery, with no information available, that the He family increasingly suspected he was sent by a business rival with whom they had previously clashed.
During the day, nothing much happened, but at night, the area around the villa was teeming with thugs hired by the He family. Why, given the current tension, would they still not let Yu Lian move into the old house? It wasn't out of shame or resentment towards a daughter-in-law who had used underhanded tactics to enter the family; rather, their son, He Lin, simply didn't want any contact with Yu Lian. If Yu Lian lived in the old house, she wouldn't be home for 300 out of 365 days a year. Therefore, even at this point, the He family hadn't compromised.
When Peng Zhi and Li Xuexiang, who had been dismissed after being robbed, received the notification, they couldn't believe it. Their lucrative jobs were gone in the blink of an eye.
"Why, Uncle Chen? You were doing a good job, weren't you?"
"What else could it be? If you hadn't left the back door unlocked, would that thief have been able to get in so easily? If we had sent Comrade Yu in a few minutes earlier, the eldest grandson of the He family would have been the one to suffer! You wouldn't even have a place to cry then. This is compensation, it's more than enough. Don't throw a tantrum, or you'll have no way to survive in the future."
Uncle Chen's words were very clear.
"Okay, how much was supplemented?"
"Three months."
Uncle Chen gave them a few more instructions, and the two agreed before leaving. No sooner had she left than Peng Zhi began to complain: "A supposedly wealthy family? Only three months' worth of subsidies! So stingy! No wonder they've fallen from grace!"
Li Xuexiang, listening nearby, felt her blood pressure soar: "Alright! What nonsense are you spouting? It was our fault for not doing our job properly. The He family has already been more than generous by offering three months' wages as compensation. We just don't know where we'll be going after this!"
Speaking of this, Peng Zhi got angry again: "We were doing so well, and it's all Yu Lian's fault! I'm so angry, I won't be Peng if I don't avenge this."
These words made Li Xuexiang decide not to work with her anymore. In her opinion, Peng Zhi was too radical and unreasonable. If they hadn't been in the same boat before, she might have been the one framed by Peng Zhi like that. After saying a few more words, Li Xuexiang left. Peng Zhi then used this opportunity to spread rumors around the villa area.
