As night deepened, the lights under the awning erected in the courtyard were bright, but the sounds of people had become sparse.
The villagers who had helped gradually dispersed, leaving only a few close relatives to clean up the mess.
Wang Hao was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief and found a chair to sit down by the shed.
He felt a tingling sensation in his legs and realized that he had hardly sat down all day.
"Brother, dinner's ready!" Xiaoya called out from the kitchen. "It's the last round, just the few of us left."
Wang Hao got up and walked over.
Xiaoya, Su Qing, and Li Na were already sitting at the table in the corner of the courtyard.
Several plates of reheated dishes were laid out on the table—stewed chicken, braised pork, and stir-fried vegetables—all leftovers from the evening's banquet, but the portions were still generous.
"You must be exhausted?" Xiaoya served Wang Hao a bowl of rice.
"It's alright." Wang Hao took the bowl and glanced around the table.
There were four seats. Xiaoya and Su Qing sat next to each other, the seat next to Li Na was empty, and the seat opposite Su Qing was also empty.
He hesitated for a moment, but still sat down next to Li Na.
This is a delicate choice.
Li Na's eyes lit up, while Su Qing lowered her head and gently stirred the rice in her bowl with her chopsticks.
"Wang Hao," Li Na turned to the side, propping her elbows on the table, and faced him directly.
"You really impressed me today. When I arrived this afternoon, I saw you inspecting the wires and talking to the electrician like a foreman."
She said this with a smile, her two dimples were very deep, and her tone was full of undisguised admiration.
Wang Hao was a little embarrassed: "It's just lending a hand, it's what I should do."
"It's not like I'm just lending a hand." Li Na picked up the teapot and naturally poured Wang Hao a cup of tea first.
"Xiaoya told me everything. From setting up the shed to laying the power lines to purchasing supplies, you took care of it all. If it were anyone else's house, it would have been in complete chaos by now."
Her movements as she poured tea were fluid; she poured Wang Hao's tea first, then Xiao Ya's, and finally Su Qing's.
As Li Na handed the teacup to Su Qing, she smiled and said, "Sister Su Qing, don't you think so? Wang Hao is so reliable now."
Su Qing took the teacup, her fingertips touching the warm porcelain, and paused for half a second before saying, "Hmm, she's quite capable."
Her voice was soft and flat. After speaking, she lowered her head and took a sip of tea, as if the tea needed to be savored slowly.
"Right!" Li Na was even more excited after receiving approval.
She turned back to Wang Hao, moving even closer:
"Seriously, Wang Hao, it's been... ten years since we graduated high school, right? You've changed so much."
"You weren't like this before..."
Wang Hao felt a little embarrassed by what she said, so he picked up a piece of chicken and stuffed it into his mouth, mumbling, "I was young and didn't know any better back then."
"It's not that I'm being unreasonable, oh dear..." Li Na corrected him, gesturing with her hand in the air:
"But things are different now. You've opened up completely. Look at how you greeted the guests today, offering cigarettes and pouring tea, your words and actions were impeccable."
"Xiaoya, is your brother a leader in the city? He doesn't have the aura of an ordinary worker."
Xiaoya was eating when she was called out. She looked up and smiled, "My brother works in sales, but he's really good at it. He's even bought a car."
"BMW, I know!" Li Na's eyes lit up even more. She rested her chin on her hand, staring intently at Wang Hao.
"Wang Hao! You're amazing!"
"Seriously, I think you're already better than most people..."
Wang Hao, unsure of what to say, thought for a long time before replying:
"Thank you! But you flatter me..."
Li Na waved her hand and said seriously, "Wang Hao, I'm not just saying that to make it sound nice, I really didn't think of that!"
Wang Hao smiled and said, "Well... you really have a discerning eye!"
"Hehe!" Li Na chuckled happily.
Su Qing paused for a moment after hearing the conversation between the two. She stared at the rice in her bowl, as if studying the arrangement of the grains.
A few seconds later, she picked up a piece of green vegetable, put it in her mouth, and chewed it slowly and carefully.
Li Na's attention shifted back to Wang Hao:
"By the way, Wang Hao, what kind of sales are you doing in the provincial capital? Cars? Real estate? Or something else?"
"It's a liquor store," Wang Hao said.
"Alcohol sales are booming!" Li Na immediately chimed in.
"There's a trick to this industry. My uncle does it too; he runs a tobacco and liquor store in the county town and makes quite a bit of money every year."
"Working in the provincial capital means you'll be exposed to higher-level clients and have more opportunities. Most importantly, there are more social occasions, allowing you to build a wide network of connections."
She leaned forward as she spoke, her elbow almost touching Wang Hao's arm. Wang Hao instinctively moved back, but Li Na seemed oblivious and continued, "So what kind of alcohol do you mainly distribute? Baijiu? Red wine? Or both?"
"Mainly baijiu..." Wang Hao replied briefly, then lowered his head and ate a mouthful of rice.
"The profit margin for liquor is huge!" Li Na was clearly very interested in this topic.
"Besides, liquor is a necessity for social interactions here. Wang Hao, you've chosen a good job; you have stable clients and room for growth. You must have a lot of social engagements, right? Isn't it tiring to drink with clients?"
"It's alright, we'll see." Wang Hao didn't want to talk much about work and changed the subject, saying, "Teaching in the county town is quite stable."
"It's stable, but you can see the end from the beginning." Li Na sighed, then laughed:
"But things are pretty good now. I have more holidays and time to do my own things."
"By the way, does your company have any promotional activities for the Chinese New Year? If you need gifts, I can help you introduce clients; my uncle has quite a few connections."
"No need for now, thank you," Wang Hao politely declined.
Li Na didn't mind and continued enthusiastically:
"Don't mention it. If you ever want to expand into the county market, feel free to contact me anytime."
"Although I am a teacher, I know quite a few people, including those in industry and commerce, taxation, and logistics in several units. I can talk to them all."
As she said this, she naturally used serving chopsticks to pick up a piece of braised pork for Wang Hao and put it in his bowl:
"Eat more, you've used up a lot of energy today. I noticed you didn't eat much at lunch, you've been busy the whole time."
"I know the liquor business is demanding and requires a lot of effort; you also need to be good at networking."
The braised pork belly was glistening with oil, making it stand out prominently on the white rice.
The air fell silent for a moment.
Xiaoya opened her mouth, as if to say something, but then swallowed it back.
Su Qing raised her eyelids, her gaze lingering on the piece of meat for half a second before moving to Li Na's face.
Li Na was smiling at Wang Hao, her profile looking particularly vivid under the light.
Su Qing's lips pressed into a straight line. She put down her chopsticks, picked up the soup bowl, and scooped up a spoonful of soup. The spoon touched the side of the bowl, making a soft "ting" sound.
She took a slow sip, her throat bobbing gently, then put down the bowl, picked up her chopsticks again, and took out the smallest piece of green vegetable.
Throughout the entire process, she didn't look at anyone or say a word.
