Chapter 28 Ice Surface Cracks
"Shut up, don't shout!" Sun Chengwu snapped. "Don't move, wait a minute."
The polar bear seemed completely unsuspecting; with a powerful tug of its thick neck, it tore off a large chunk of frozen flesh.
The scene of a polar bear eating a person made many people sweat profusely.
The fear of being eaten by their own kind, ingrained in their genes, made their hands tremble.
Sun Chengwu reminded everyone, "Everyone, take a deep breath and relax!"
Reminded, the group snapped out of their daze and suddenly realized that, out of fear, they had crawled out of the snowdrift.
They quickly lay down, breathing heavily to calm their nerves.
Bai Zhan looked at Sun Chengwu and mouthed, "Make a move?"
Sun Chengwu nodded and slowly raised the spear in his hand.
Seeing this, the others also gripped their weapons tightly.
"One, two..." Sun Chengwu counted silently.
"three!"
"cast!"
More than thirty spears were hurled from all directions at the polar bear that was eating!
The sound of something cutting through the air rang out.
The polar bear suddenly looked up, but it was too late.
Most of the spears fell into the snow around it, but seven or eight remained firmly embedded in its thick shoulders, back, and sides.
However, the expected sound of a spear piercing flesh did not occur.
With a few muffled "thuds," the metal spikes, made from airplane wreckage and on which everyone had placed high hopes, only pierced the polar bear's extremely thick fur and subcutaneous fat layer, and were mostly just shallowly penetrated, or even bounced off!
Only one or two needles, at a particularly sharp angle, managed to pierce the skin, but they merely clung to the fur and did not cause any real damage.
The polar bear, in pain, let out a deafening roar.
It stood upright, its massive body resembling a small white mountain. A few drops of blood seeped from the pierced spots, but it was clearly only a superficial wound. It turned its head, its small eyes instantly locking onto the nearest few stunned attackers.
There was no fear in those eyes, only fury from being provoked.
This scene took everyone by surprise.
Who would have thought that polar bears have thicker fur than they imagined?
When the polar bear charged, this enormous creature, two meters tall at the shoulder and three meters tall when standing upright, resembled a small tank, rampaging and kicking up large plumes of snow.
"Run!" Sun Chengwu roared with all his might.
"Run!"
Fear exploded instantly. The ambushing crowd dropped the remaining spears they held and scrambled out from behind their cover, desperately fleeing in the direction they had come from.
The polar bear landed on all fours with a loud thud, causing the ice surface to tremble slightly.
Its speed is completely disproportionate to its bulky size.
"Run separately! Don't stay together!" Sun Chengwu shouted as he ran.
But mistakes always come at a price.
The last one was a thin, middle-aged man wearing glasses.
He was already exhausted and staggering, crying, "Wait for me, don't run so fast, save me..."
His voice was choked with sobs, and his breath froze on his glasses, blurring his vision.
Out of fear, he moved forward mechanically, not even hearing the heavy footsteps and thunderous growls approaching from behind.
The ice was too slippery, and he lost his footing and suddenly fell on the ice.
With a muffled "thud," accompanied by the crisp sound of bones shattering.
Before the man could even scream, the polar bear caught up and slapped him on the back.
He flew forward seven or eight meters like a kite with a broken string, rolled several times on the ice, and came to a stop. A blinding red light spread from beneath his body.
The polar bear didn't even stop eating; instead, it angrily swept its gaze over the other fleeing figures ahead, stood upright, and let out a deafening roar.
"Old Chen!" someone cried out, but dared not stop walking.
"Don't look back! Run!" Sun Chengwu's face turned pale. He gasped for breath, his panting sound like a broken bellows. His lungs felt like they were on fire, and his legs felt like lead. But his survival instinct squeezed out the last bit of strength.
He regretted it; he shouldn't have listened to Bai Zhan.
Is hunting polar bears something humans can do?
"Ah! Help!"
Another scream.
A young man who was running a little slower was caught by the edge of the bear's paw, and he spun and fell onto the ice. The bone in his lower leg pierced through his flesh, leaving a trail of red blood.
The polar bear pounced on him, roaring with its mouth wide open, and a stench that was nauseating wafted over him.
He could even see human flesh stuck between the teeth of a polar bear.
"No!" he screamed in terror, kicking his legs frantically as he backed away.
The polar bear opened its mouth wide, about to bite down.
Just then, something unexpected happened.
Click...
Boom!
A dull, loud thud was heard, and the ice beneath our feet shook violently.
Immediately afterwards, a crack appeared a dozen meters in front of the fleeing crowd.
Without any warning, before Sun Chengwu could even give a heads-up, the cracks in the ice surface widened instantly, revealing the deep blue sea below.
Ice shards fell and crashed into the sea, splashing up tiny waves.
Sun Chengwu lay on the ground, straining his limbs to force himself to stop, while shouting forward, "The ice is cracking! Stop!"
But a person running at full speed cannot stop.
The people at the front watched helplessly as the crack opened before their eyes. In terror, they tried to turn around, but due to inertia, they fell heavily onto the ice and slid towards the edge of the crack.
"Ah—!" With a scream, the two were unable to stop in time and slid directly into the icy cold seawater.
The black seawater instantly swallowed them, leaving only a few strings of bubbles and desperately waving arms before it sank to the bottom.
Another person was half-suspended in mid-air, clinging desperately to the edge of the ice, the ice beneath them cracking under the strain.
The ferocious polar bear also slowed down abruptly in the face of this sudden change.
However, its massive size and enormous inertia prevent it from being as agile as a human.
Its thick limbs scratched frantically at the ice, trying to stop, its sharp claws carving deep scratches into the ice.
However, its weight was too great, and the ice surface collapsed a second time.
With a crisp cracking sound, the ice beneath the polar bear collapsed entirely.
The polar bear roared, and its massive body plunged into the dark sea, creating even bigger waves.
"Quickly, save them!" Sun Chengwu's heart pounded.
As he backed away, he reached out his hand to the survivor who was still struggling at the edge of the ice cave.
"Grab me!"
Bai Zhan also realized what was happening and, along with two other people who were nearby, scrambled over, grabbed the man's arm and clothes, and desperately dragged him backward.
"Help me... glug... it's so cold..." The person who fell into the water was chattering, and their face turned bluish-purple at a visible speed.
