Chapter 160 Examination List
With Rachel by her side, the second day of the assessment was indeed much more efficient.
It has to be said that Rachel, with her hood up and cold expression shrouded in half-shadow, exuded a stronger sense of psychological pressure on outsiders than Li Zhen.
There was no way around it; the longer Li Zhen lived peacefully on Earth, the more her mindset would drift towards her most original consciousness.
His languid demeanor and the ever-present gentle smile on his lips diluted the cold indifference born from the bloodshed.
The first candidate, Blue Beetle, was unanimously approved. Although it was indeed not mature enough, it was not a troublemaker either; it was a rather enthusiastic and lively young man.
The second stop was the Warhawk Holly.
Li Zhen had a vague impression of this red-haired girl. Warhawk and White Dove seemed to be a pair of power names that could be passed down. These two hero partners often had one of them die alone due to certain crises, until the next one who was connected to them by blood or spirit took over.
Holly, recommended by White Dove, is the new Warhawk. She is not only young but also has a bad temper. The previous White Dove obviously doesn't want to take care of the child anymore and is trying to pass the new Warhawk to the Justice League.
After Li Zhen left, he immediately vetoed the idea, since he didn't want to take care of the child either.
The third stop was Beast Boy, rejected. This guy was either scared or nervous, he stuttered and was clearly not good at speaking, the kind of person who was not presentable.
The fourth stop is Mal Duncan, a street fighter with no name, no superpowers, and who dropped out of school early.
Li Zhen was wondering how this guy got on the list, but after checking the backend information, she found that it was actually a recommendation from a retired superhero named Wildcat.
After exchanging a few words with this man, the boy appeared bewildered and nervous throughout.
All he knew was that his boxing skills were taught by an old man he met while working at a bar. He had no idea of the old man's true identity, let alone why a superhero organization would come to scout him.
He was so nervous that he couldn't answer any of the questions, but Li Zhen was still willing to give the boy a chance. Being nervous wasn't a bad thing.
Once again, Li Zhen suppressed her body to a normal level and, after a brief exchange with Mal Duncan, acknowledged the young man's abilities.
"He has good talent, but lacks more bloody combat experience. He is also quite obedient, making him easy to command."
Rachel watched as Li Zhen swiped across the Beast Boys marked with a red cross on the tablet and ticked off Mal Duncan's picture.
"I always felt like you were a bit prejudiced against people with green skin."
The last stop on their visit was a girl named Lilith Clay.
This girl wasn't recommended by any established superhero; rather, it was a letter of recommendation from a reclusive billionaire named Roland who submitted it to the Justice League.
At first, Li Zhen thought that Roland was just an ordinary person.
But Steelbone actually reminded him to be a little more proper and careful, and then sent him a small portion of Roland's relevant information.
"A prominent philanthropist who has made numerous personal donations to the United Nations and donated a total of US$2788.9 billion to various children's aid organizations around the world."
When Li Zhen read this line of text, his gaze was somewhat blank.
"Not only that, Roland has also provided financial support to more than a dozen superhero organizations registered with the United Nations. However, this information is not convenient to disclose. I estimate that it should be more than 10 billion."
Li Zhen looked even more bewildered. This Roland was someone he had never even heard of before, and was clearly just an insignificant background character in the comic.
But in the real world where he now has to survive, such a wealth makes him feel like he could conjure up a colossal behemoth with every breath.
"Did the Justice League also receive funding from him? Does Batman need it? Would he agree to that?"
"Why not accept a pure donation? Wayne Enterprises' money doesn't come from thin air. It's precisely because Batman did his background check that his letter of introduction was able to appear in the Justice League."
Recalling her conversation with Cyborg, Li Zhen and Rachel met Roland and Lilith at a villa in the San Francisco Bay Area.
This unassuming tycoon was very friendly. In his home, there was only one old servant, who was not much older than the tycoon. The servant, who was overweight and dressed in a brown-gray suit, introduced Lilith, who was sitting cross-legged on the sofa watching TV, to Li Zhen.
"When I found Lilith, she was still homeless on the streets."
Roland spoke softly to Li Zhen and Rachel, who were sitting in the living room, while gesturing for a servant to bring over two cups of tea.
Li Zhen listened casually as the wealthy old man recounted Lilith's background, while her hand under the table gently squeezed Rachel's palm.
Rachel tapped twice with her index finger in response.
This was the secret code that Li Zhen and Rachel had agreed upon before entering the villa. Rachel was telling him that Roland was indeed a good person, at least on a spiritual level.
"I took her in temporarily, and later Lilith told me that she had run away from an adoptive family because she wanted to find her biological parents."
"I originally wanted to contact her and send her back, but Lilith was unwilling to go back to that family. She said that the family was not very friendly to her."
"Later, in order to pay my rent, Lilith used a prophetic ability to point out the predicaments of some of my properties."
Roland seemed to have a slightly helpless smile on his face when he said this.
"I'm getting old, and my business acumen isn't what it used to be. Lilith's prediction saved me from losing more than five billion dollars. Although it didn't cripple me, I realized how powerful her ability was—I think it should be used in a more appropriate way."
"The Justice League is the most powerful superhero organization I can contact through the United Nations, and I think she might be able to get better guidance."
Li Zhen nodded. Through Cyborg's communication and Roland's description, he roughly understood that this girl named Lilith was most likely a wild, naturally awakened superhuman.
Furthermore, the ability to foresee the future is truly remarkable. As long as the girl herself doesn't have any particular personality flaws, she certainly meets Lee Jung's requirements for members of the Teen Titans.
"Can I talk to her for a bit?"
Li Zhen asked Roland.
As if she had anticipated this, Lilith was already standing barefoot on the floor behind Li Zhen when Li Zhen finished speaking.
"What would you like to ask?"
Roland spoke at just the right moment.
"I've always believed that choices are two-way. Lilith not only has the ability to foresee the future, but also to some extent to communicate telepathically. As long as Lilith is willing, I'll be happy that she can find a suitable place."
Li Zhen didn't have any extra emotions. At least Roland's statement proved that this old tycoon was not only kind-hearted but also clear-headed enough not to blindly entrust his trust to others.
He turned around and looked at the girl with loose blonde hair, wearing a green nightgown.
"I already know the answers to everything I want to ask."
Lilith stared at Li Zhen for a while, then glanced at Rachel, a hint of embarrassment on her face.
"I cannot communicate with you telepathically, nor can I communicate with the person next to you."
This is not surprising, as Li Zhen's soul was fused with her physical body, and Rachel was skilled in soul magic.
Even the most elite Mars hunters on Earth need direct physical contact to read Lee Jung's thoughts, a skill that requires telepathy.
Lilith is probably not that powerful yet. After all, Li Zhen not only had never heard of Roland, but he also didn't have much of an impression of Lilith.
"So what about your ability to foresee the future? Does it tell you how to make choices today?"
This time, Lilith fell into a long silence.
She stared blankly at Li Zhen for several seconds until Rachel's gaze began to sharpen, then turned to look with a hint of longing at the old tycoon on the other side of the table who was smiling at them.
"For some reasons, I cannot reveal too much, but you will be a very responsible instructor and leader, and I am willing to join the Teen Titans."
