Chapter 198 Saving the Bats

As the infected surged towards him relentlessly, Batman's transparent mask, which covered his mouth and nose, began to smear with blood and foam with each breath.

He had suffered a severe injury to his lower back and abdomen, and only received brief repairs with a nanomedical machine in an emergency treatment room. Afterward, he hurriedly put on his bat armor and searched the streets and alleys of Gotham City for the other members of the Bat Family.

This time, however, the Gotham citizens infected with the virus swarmed forward, forcing the Batmobile to a stop. Batman had no choice but to jump out of the vehicle and use the grappling hook to move through the city.

With each jump, the contraction and release of his muscles tore at the already unhealed wounds in his waist and abdomen. With each leap across the Gotham City night sky, hordes of zombies stretched out their hands high above him, roaring and yearning, trying to drag Batman into the same abyss as them.

They seemed to be hopping around in vain, for human legs are, after all, inextricably linked to the bats flying in the night sky.

But then a zombie that should have been an ordinary zombie suddenly jumped more than ten meters high, almost reaching Batman's feet, which were at the lowest point of the grappling hook's swing.

Then, it was as if these zombies had suddenly switched on an evolutionary switch.

With his powerful leaps, spitting acid from his mouth, and even accompanied by a roaring rhythm, the streetlights on the side of the street began to flicker on and off until Batman flew overhead, when a streetlight bulb suddenly exploded, and an arc of electricity lashed out at Batman.

Although he narrowly avoided the whip crackling with electric arcs, the illogical scene cast an even darker shadow over Batman's heart.

These zombies have actually evolved superpowers.

And it's not the kind of haphazard evolution.

Rather, it is based on their desires.

They longed to reach Batman as he soared through the air, and thus, through sheer willpower, they evolved various methods to teleport.

What would happen if a human with pre-existing superpowers were infected with a virus?

Just as Batman was thinking about this problem, three zombies with membranes growing from their ribs, capable of gliding through the air, suddenly jumped down from the rooftop of the building next to him.

They awkwardly controlled the direction, but within a second or two they mastered the knack of gliding, and finally, under the combined attack from different angles, they managed to knock Batman down from the sky.

Upon landing, Batman was finally surrounded by a horde of zombies, which severely slowed his progress. In addition, he was unsure whether the infected civilians could be saved, so he had to hold back his strength in every move.

It's unclear how much time passed, but it was long enough that all of Batman's usable items were exhausted, his punches and kicks began to lose their previous sharpness, his consciousness began to blur, and he even lost the ability to sense time.

"I was wondering why there wasn't a single person in the port; it turns out they've all gathered here."

The familiar voice traveled through the thick horde of corpses to the receiver on Batman's helmet, accompanied by a vibrating yellow arrow.

A transparent shockwave with a radius of approximately three meters exploded in a spherical shape, blasting away the ferocious zombies around Batman.

Batman looked up and saw a figure in a familiar uniform descending from the sky, gripping a rope.

Tim threw three batarangs, which landed in a triangular formation at Batman's feet. Then the center of the batarangs exploded, and pink gel foam expanded like a balloon in an instant, turning into three thick walls that enveloped Batman.

At the same time, it also kept the hordes of corpses scratching and clawing from all directions away.

Tim retracted his arms, curled his body into a near-spherical shape, and leaped precisely through the opening at the top of the inflatable bunker, finally landing in front of Batman.

"See, I told you Batman would always need a Robin."

Batman glared at him, and although he could see the transparent mask on Tim's face, he couldn't help but scold him.

"Nonsense! This virus is no ordinary virus; ordinary masks are completely ineffective against it—"

Tim raised his finger and tapped the side of his mask twice. Immediately, a purplish-black magic circle appeared as if in response, slowly rotating on the mask.

Batman was unusually interrupted, and before he could even think of his next sentence, Tim pulled out a transparent mask that Rachel had also enchanted and handed to him.

Two seconds later, Batman, now wearing a brand new mask, and Tim emerged from the top of the "pink foam bunker mountain".

The horde of corpses, which had originally been focused entirely on Batman, had now been divided into several parts.

Mia drew her bow and fired various harassing arrows. Thanks to the wool she had gathered in the bat cave, Mia now had a quiver on her back, as well as quivers tied around her waist and legs. Although this somewhat affected her agility, her firepower seemed quite sufficient for the time being.

Rachel was surrounded by a dark shadow, from which countless tentacles stretched out, swatting away any zombies that tried to approach.

Cassandra moved like a butterfly through the horde of corpses, skillfully dodging enemies using streetlights, corners, fire hydrants, and other urban structures. Sometimes, the claws that lashed out were just a hair's breadth away from tearing through her armor, but Cassandra always managed to dodge them with a leisurely stroll and kick them away.

Finally, Mar Duncan's style was much simpler and more direct.

Dressed in an extremely frugal black battle suit, with a layer of specially made alloy armor covering his fists, arms and ribs, he looked just like a boxer in a match. He held his arms in a guard position and moved in a rhythmic manner, taking small steps, swaying and twisting, like a compass standing in a fixed area.

But all the zombies that got close to Mar were swiftly and fiercely struck on the face like whips, and were sent flying backward with meaningless howls and the crisp sound of bones cracking.

Batman's expression was solemn as his gaze swept over the four Teen Titans before he looked around, seemingly searching for someone.

"Li Zhen didn't come, did she?"

"Well, actually he's already here, but he said he's not available to show up right now."

Batman frowned, and just when Tim thought Batman would question him, he heard a reply that surprised him.

"—A wise decision. We must leave here immediately."

Batman used the barbed blades attached to his arm armor to slice through the pink foam gel wall, pulling Tim along as they leaped out.

Tim didn't ask any questions immediately. Instead, he quickly signaled to the other Titans, and the five of them gathered together. Then they tore through the zombie horde's encirclement and quickly disappeared into a dark alley.

Tim finally asked a question only after Batman briefly led them away from the zombie horde.

"Why do you seem to know something about this virus?"

Through Batman's narration, everyone finally understood what Batman and the Justice League had gone through.
