Chapter 236 Two Executioners
The spires of the Gothic buildings pierced the low-hanging clouds, and scattered neon lights cast blurry patches of light on the wet asphalt.
The usual sirens, gunshots, and shouts of fighting in the alleys were now swallowed by silence.
After the Armadzo virus swept through the city, Gotham ironically bestowed upon it a peace that would never have existed otherwise.
Two figures swept across the rooftop, breaking the silence.
Whether due to the influence of some cosmic will or not, Jason, who once existed as Patient Zero, still retains the characteristics of the Red Hood in his mutated appearance.
A scarlet bone helmet extended from his body to the outside and then covered his entire head. His black combat uniform was still covered with the dew of the night, and his boots landed as lightly as a cat's on the tiles.
The other was the complete opposite, dressed in a snow-white outfit with the hood pulled down low, and even the exposed chin was covered by a mask. He was surrounded by a bright halo, which was completely out of place in the darkness of Gotham.
"I never expected Gotham to have such a quiet night."
The voice of the man in the white hood came through the hood, carrying a hint of languor that was barely perceptible, but his footsteps always kept a distance from the man in the red hood, his gaze sweeping across the empty street below.
"I heard that the virus sent everyone to the hospital?"
Red Hood glanced sideways at White Hood, but didn't say anything.
At first, he had no idea where this guy, dressed so out of place in Gotham, came from. He was so well hidden that even Batman couldn't find him, yet the other guy easily found his secret residence.
The two got into a fight in the apartment building, which had been uninhabited for years and was covered in a thick layer of dust.
Unlike Red Hood's killing techniques, which he inherited from Batman and modified himself, White Hood is somewhat like a warrior from some secret tribe, and his every move gives Red Hood a strange sense of familiarity.
Although the fight became increasingly unbelievable, Red Hood still tentatively probed the other party's identity.
During the hand-to-hand combat, he pulled out a gun, pulled the trigger without hesitation, and immediately saw his opponent easily raise his hand and catch the bullet.
So after all that fighting, the guy in the white hood was just suppressing his power and playing around with him.
Of course, Red Hood didn't really use his remaining superpowers much.
"As far as I know, few men on Paradise Island possess such mastery of martial arts."
Red Hood deftly shoved the pistol, which resembled a small hand cannon, back into the holster beside his thigh.
Although it's unknown how this Witrum man came back to life, continuing the fight is clearly pointless.
Jason wasn't surprised by Lee Jung's resurrection, after all, his own memory had only just stopped shortly after he crawled out of a pool that allowed the dead to be resurrected.
He didn't ask Li Zhen what she was trying to do by coming to Gotham in this state.
Jason simply turned and left, and Ji Zhen, whose height and build were completely wrong and who was wearing a white hooded outfit, followed him.
There was no further communication between the two, as they both knew that their goals were similar.
"The αmodrome can deplete a person's body. Gotham's hospitals and clinics are overflowing. Twenty percent of people need to lie in bed and receive oxygen, and the remaining eighty percent are now out of breath even after walking just a few steps."
"Crime? Ninety-nine percent of the people in Gotham City can't even lift their hands right now."
Jason's tone was anything but relaxed. As the former Patient Zero of the Amozzo virus, he knew the horror of the virus better than anyone else, and he was more eager than anyone else to find the contact person of the malicious organization that released the virus.
This is the real reason he took the initiative to patrol at night: not to replace Batman, but to find the culprit who almost ruined countless people and had completely fooled him.
"I thought there should have been a deeper connection between you two."
The one in the white hood, Li Zhen, stayed behind the one in the red hood, his gaze casually sweeping over the other person.
"What I mean is, you guys agreed to take on Batman together, so you can't just accept me like you did without even asking who he is, can you?"
The man in the red hood stiffened almost imperceptibly.
"When I climbed out of the pool on Lhasa Road, madness took over my mind."
"I know it sounds hard to believe, but at the time I was obsessed with killing Batman. They initially seemed like just some mysterious conglomerate that promised me weapons and manpower."
Li Zhen frowned slightly.
"No way? So you didn't even figure out those guys' identities before you followed them here to try and kill your godfather?"
"—You haven't been to the Lhasa Road Pool, so it's normal that you don't know. The people who come out of there are brainless. I just thought that after killing Batman, I could just kill them as well, so I didn't care too much."
Whether it was self-deprecation or something else, Red Hood offered a dry explanation before changing the subject.
"When the αModro virus invaded me, it also allowed me to start thinking normally, but at that time I didn't have the energy to think about anything else."
He paused, then his tone turned serious, and he revealed an even more chilling secret.
"Moreover, Luther's antidote did not completely solve the problem."
The white hood swayed slightly, clearly intrigued by the words.
"What? The antidote didn't kill all the viruses?"
"The virus that was visible on the surface was indeed killed."
Red Hood raised his hand, and gleaming silver claws pierced through the tactical glove, squeezing out from the tips of his fingers and then retracting.
"But some people are highly compatible with the virus; the antidote kills the virus but leaves behind the superpowers it brings."
Jason withdrew his hand, his tone carrying a hint of complexity.
"That's how I was. I swallowed a lot of antidote to get rid of the virus in my body, but I still had 10% of my superpowers left. I don't think there are many people like that, but Gotham City has a large population."
The evening breeze swept across the rooftops, but couldn't budge the white hood; the fabric swayed gently, as if welded to Li Zhen's head defying physics.
He was silent for a moment, then his voice finally picked up a little interest.
Even if the three questions Li Zhen had thought of weren't directly related, there would still be some weak connections between them.
If Jason can find that organization, that would be ideal. By using the source of the virus as a breakthrough, they might be able to solve the remaining two problems at the same time.
"Could that organization come back for those who retained their superpowers?"
Whether it's always been like this, or whether the pool on Lhasa Road, which can both revive and drive people mad, still has some lingering issues, Jason occasionally uses strange and inappropriate metaphors when he speaks.
"I see them as the key to unlocking the identity of the organization that released the virus. The people of this city, once they become superhuman, will mostly be waiting for me to put them in their coffins."
Li Zhen managed to understand that sentence, albeit with some difficulty.
It roughly means that the probability of someone in Gotham City getting superpowers and becoming a supervillain is almost 100%. Jason could go everywhere looking for such a guy in order to uncover that organization. Even if he couldn't find any clues about the organization after finding him, it wouldn't be a loss. Killing him would definitely be the right thing to do.
Although Li Zhen had no objection to killing, he always felt that the Amozzo virus had not completely cured Jason's aftereffects.
