Chapter 286 Judgment and Betrayal in the Name of Love

Hal took a deep breath.

He focused all his attention on the figure in front of him.

He walked toward Carol.

The distance between the two was getting closer and closer.

But Hal felt as if he had traversed the entire starry sky, passing through countless moments filled with regret and missed opportunities.

"I'm sorry. Carol, I'm so sorry."

This is a sentence he owed her for many years.

"sorry?"

She gave a cold laugh.

"Hey Hal Jordan, the great Green Lantern, the guardian of the universe, you can't even say sorry?"

"I thought that in your world, there was no room for anything else but responsibility, tasks, and that damn ring!"

Her voice suddenly rose, filled with resentment.

"Oh, oh, oh! It's starting, it's starting!"

Above the clouds, Xiu En pulled a handful of Wishing Fruits from his pocket and crunched on them.

"Look, look!"

He nudged the sunflower next to him with his elbow.

"You don't care about me at all, you only care about your job! Let me tell you, according to the usual script, the male lead should bow his head and admit his mistake, and then make a heartfelt confession."

"Hmph, vulgar."

The sunflower dismissively tossed its leaves aside.

"Even Gotham's daytime family dramas don't use this kind of plot anymore. It's completely unoriginal."

As she spoke, she stretched out her vines and swiped the largest and bluest wishing fruit from Xiu En's pocket.

"Furthermore, look at that woman; her micro-expressions are too stiff. Although her lines are full of anger, her eyes are filled with expectation that she'll come and comfort her. This kind of hypocritical performance is too contrived. Thumbs down."

That makes sense.

Xiu En nodded in agreement.

"So tell me, can Hal handle it?"

"Disaster."

"Look at him, he doesn't know what to do with his hands. He's obviously inexperienced. I reckon the situation will completely spiral out of control within three sentences."

Ivy's prediction unfortunately came true.

Faced with Carol's questioning, Hal was as tongue-tied as a naive young man on his first date.

"I'm not..."

"Carol, I just... I felt at the time..."

The more anxious he became, the less he could explain himself.

He wanted to say that he was entrusted with the mission of giving the green light in order to protect everyone, including her.

But to Carol, these words were just yet another excuse.

"What do you think? You always think!"

Carol's anger was completely ignited by his clumsy appearance.

"You think testing that damn prototype is more important than our date! You think going on space patrol is more important than celebrating my birthday! You think your great cause will always come first!"

"Hal Jordan, you never, ever truly loved me!"

She screamed at the top of her lungs, and purple energy surged out of her body once more!

"What you've fallen in love with is just flying, just the thrill, just the all-powerful Green Lantern identity that allows you to escape all responsibility!"

"I……"

Hal was forced to take a step back, his face turning pale.

He wanted to argue, but sadly discovered that Carol was right.

He was once immersed in the immense power and freedom that being Green Lantern brought, which allowed him to temporarily forget the shadow of his father's plane crash, forget his escape from the family business, and forget all the trivialities of real life.

Perhaps, he really was... wrong?

He closed his eyes.

When he opened his eyes again, it was Hal the Green Lantern.

"No, you're wrong, Carol."

"I became Green Lantern because I was afraid of it."

"Do you remember the day my father's plane crashed?"

He asked.

Carol avoided his gaze.

"That day, I stood by the track."

"I watched his plane turn into a fireball right in front of me, I heard everyone around me screaming, and I could smell the burning in the air."

"But there's nothing I can do."

"I could only watch, and I could only be afraid."

"From that day on, I vowed that I would never again experience the fear of helplessness. I practiced flying relentlessly, I challenged all kinds of limits, I did all the most dangerous things! I just wanted to prove to myself and to everyone: I, Hal Jordan, am fearless."

He raised his head, revealing his weakness and fear to Carol.

"But I was wrong."

He shook his head with a wry smile.

"The day I became Green Lantern, when this ring forcibly accessed all my memories, it told me that I was the person in the entire universe who understood fear the most."

"That is precisely why I am qualified to harness the power of will."

Carol looked at him.

Hal's words pried open the door to her heart, which had been sealed off by her obsessive love, and allowed her to see that little boy who, deep in her memory, was also trembling with fear.

But it only managed to pry open a small crack.

The power of the purple lamp was more deeply rooted than she had imagined.

It amplified her heartbreak and solidified her resentment.

"Very touching."

After a long silence, Carol finally spoke.

"Heh, a hero's origin story. Fear donned your armor, transforming you into the formidable Green Lantern. A truly moving tale."

"But, Hal!"

"What does this have to do with our breakup!"

Above the clouds, the sunflower clicked its tongue.

She patted Xiu En's arm with a leaf.

"I told you, she doesn't care what the other person says; she only cares about her own feelings. This communication is ineffective."

Xiu En nodded in agreement and popped another Wishing Fruit into his mouth.

"See, you're running away again!"

When Carol saw that Hal was speechless, disappointment and anger rose in her eyes once again.

"You're always like this! Using trivial, grandiose reasons to cover up your selfish nature!"

"HAL! You're not... uh..."

Her words came to an abrupt end.

Her body fell forward.

She lowered her head.

A dagger tip made of pinkish-purple crystal protruded from her chest.

Above, there were drops of energy liquid, like blood.

Why?

Behind her stood the Starsapphire female warrior she trusted most, who had always stood by her side.

Phidera was drawing out the crystal dagger stained with the queen's blood.

On Fidra’s face was a fervent, sacred desire to achieve a greater ideal.

"Because, Your Majesty! You have been corrupted."

Fidra kicked the swaying Carol to the ground.

"puff--!"

Carol coughed up a mouthful of blood, and her queen armor began to crack like shattered glass, its light rapidly dimming.

His appearance made your love no longer pure!

With the blood-dripping crystal dagger held high, Phidera proclaimed loudly to the Starsapphire beings around him, who were now completely stunned and in chaos.

"The stench of cowardice is polluting our sacred source of purple light!"

"She wavered! She even began to understand his ex-partner's so-called pain! This is betrayal! The most shameless betrayal of love itself!"

True love is absolute! It allows no impurities!

"It simply needs to be obeyed!"

She opened her arms, like a newly born goddess, and issued her declaration of a great purge to all the Starsapphires.

"I, Fidra, will replace the corrupted queen and purify Zamalun! We will sever all ties with the outside world! We will banish all impure men! We will establish a truly perfect kingdom of love!"

Hesitation and fear were revealed in the eyes of some of the Star Blue Stone female warriors.

But many more Star Sapphires, especially the younger ones with more extreme ideas, had a fanatical light in their eyes just like that of Fydra!

"Purify! Purify!"

"For pure love!"

They raised their arms and began to enthusiastically echo Fidra's slogans, surrounding their still hesitant companions!

And so, a brutal civil war broke out!

Hal Jordan's mind went blank for three seconds the moment Carol fell.

Then, that blank space was completely replaced by a raging rage!

"You're asking for it!!!"

The green light was tinged with an ominous yellow halo!

The will, fueled by anger, is transforming in a dangerous direction!

Hal's figure disappeared from the spot!

The next second, he appeared in front of Fidra, who was talking loudly, as if he had teleported!

His hand, adorned with the green light ring, transformed into an iron fist brimming with boundless power!

He punched slammed into Fidra's smug face!

"Well done!"

Instead of being surprised, Phidira was delighted. She let out a shrill laugh, and countless pink and purple crystals sprouted wildly from the ground beneath her feet, forming a crystal wall in front of her!

"boom------!!!"

Hal's punch, imbued with boundless rage, blasted a huge hole in the crystal wall!

The force of the impact sent Fidra flying hundreds of meters before he managed to regain his footing in mid-air.

A trickle of purple blood seeped from the corner of her mouth. Looking at Hal's eyes, reddened with rage, her smile grew even more excited!

"That's right! That's it! Anger! Hatred! Let your heart be filled with pain because I hurt her! Then, transform that pain into love for me! That's how love is expressed!"

She screamed morbidly.

Hal responded with a second punch, and a third punch!
