Chapter 30 Trust
"I'm more interested in your magic trick than Afu's aerobics."
Bruce put down the tablet, his deep eyes turning to Shum.
"High-lumen flashes, directional light clusters, and even the ability to generate physical impact. This doesn't seem like ordinary bioluminescence, Shuen. Is the metallization in your lungs some kind of energy converter?"
Here comes Batman's occupational hazard.
Xiu En played with the silver spoon in his hand. The halo flickered slightly, and the surface of the spoon softened instantly due to the high temperature, allowing him to knead it casually like clay.
"This is divine grace, Bruce. Or some kind of quantum mechanics? Who knows?"
Shuen threw the twisted spoon into the car's trash can.
"That poor guy who got knocked out by Afu, his gear is quite interesting. Those goggles protect against strong light, his clothes are cut-resistant, and he doesn't even have body heat. If you're planning to hand him over to the police, why not take his gear off and give it to me as a tip?"
Bruce narrowed his eyes slightly.
"That's a dangerous piece of evidence, Shum. And it was my car that brought him back."
"But I blinded him."
"Afu knocked him unconscious."
"That was an assist! Without my flashbang, Afu would have been an easy target!"
Ah Fu, sitting in the front row, chimed in at the opportune moment: "Young Master, if you don't mind, that gentleman's teeth seem to have been specially modified. In my experience, these kinds of assassins usually hide something in their mouths. Once we get home, perhaps we'll need to give him a thorough oral examination first."
The car shook slightly as it drove through the massive, ornate iron gate.
The magnificent yet eerie Wayne Manor stands in the night.
"arrive."
Bruce's eyes sharpened.
"Shuen, you can observe the assassin, but don't make any moves. I have some theories about certain legends from Gotham's underworld that I need to verify."
The huge mahogany bookshelf slowly slid open.
Shuen followed Bruce into the passage hidden beneath the manor, the metal grating beneath their feet echoing hollowly.
"So, this is what you call a high-tech security room?"
Xiu En stood at the entrance to the underground space, which was as big as a basketball court, looking at the row of supercomputer screens that were running.
And then there was the carbon fiber tactical armor displayed in the glass case next to it, which clearly didn't belong to any security company. His lips twitched involuntarily.
"Most wealthy people might install a few infrared sensors in their homes, but here... if you also hang a few bat specimens, I'll think I've wandered into the wrong movie set."
"Bruce, your pretense with me right now is like an elephant sticking a scallion on its trunk to pretend to be a pig—it's all so perfunctory."
Bruce took off his suit jacket and casually tossed it to Afu, who was pushing the specially made restraint chair behind him.
He walked toward the huge control panel.
"This is a necessary investment to cope with the increasingly complex security environment in Gotham. In addition, my extreme sports hobby requires the support of some special equipment."
He turned around, his back to the huge bat-shaped computer screen.
"As for disguise, Miss Pamela has already told you everything about me. It would be impolite and a waste of time to talk to you while wearing a mask."
Xiu En raised an eyebrow, leaned against a half-finished black vehicle, and tapped on its armor: "So, you trust a glowing monster that much? Aren't you afraid I'll turn around and sell your secrets to the Joker or the Penguin?"
"I have my own set of standards for judging bad people, Shuen."
Bruce walked up to Claw, who had been pushed over by Alfred, and began to examine the unconscious assassin's mouth.
"A person who is willing to spend time helping a group of homeless children may be a troublemaker, or even a madman, but he will never be the kind of villain without any bottom line."
"and……"
He paused, then picked up a pair of surgical forceps from the tool tray.
"If someone like Pamela is willing to endorse you, and even warn me on your behalf, then you must be something special."
"Young Master, his body temperature is rising; it seems the effects of the cryogenic dormancy solution are wearing off."
Afu put on rubber gloves and pinched the chin of the sharp claw.
"Furthermore, Mr. Hugh, if you really want to sell this secret, I don't recommend choosing the Penguin. He's usually very stingy with his offers and has a terrible reputation."
Bruce ignored the butler's dry humor, and with his pliers he reached into the claw's mouth, a false tooth that was clearly a different color from the other teeth was forcibly pulled out.
"These are miniature toxic oxidant capsules; once bitten, they will instantly corrode the brain. It seems our guest might be uncooperative after waking up."
The claw, which was tightly bound to the titanium alloy chair, suddenly twitched violently, and some kind of black blood vessels seemed to be writhing beneath its ashen skin.
The claw, whose fangs had just been removed and whose mouth still bore traces of dark red blood, opened its eyes.
He didn't look at Bruce, who was holding surgical forceps, nor did he pay any attention to the old butler who looked like he was not to be trifled with.
Instead, he stared at Xiu En, who was leaning against the car.
Or more accurately, they were staring at the golden halo around Xiu En that seemed particularly dazzling in the dark underground cave.
Xiu En felt a little uneasy under the gaze.
"Hey buddy, I know I'm handsome and I even glow, but the way you're looking at me makes me feel like a piece of pork belly being stared at by a hungry wolf. Bruce, is this guy's prefrontal cortex frozen?"
Bruce didn't speak, but silently adjusted the angle of the sedative injection gun in his hand, his eyes quickly shifting between Claw and Shuen, his brain working at lightning speed.
Just then, the dry, pale lips of the claws twitched slightly:
"Nuntius..."
"What?"
Xiu En picked at his ear and leaned forward a little.
"You mean Nurse? Sorry, there's only a very violent old butler here."
Claw's eyes followed Shuen's movements. He struggled to raise his head and uttered a few more clear syllables:
"Nuntius… Solis…"
Afu raised an eyebrow, breaking the silence with a London accent: "Latin, sir, it means..."
Messenger of the sun.
"what?"
System, come out and explain yourself. How come the assassins of the Court of Owls are also your followers? Isn't this business expansion a bit too fast?
Bruce put down the injection gun in his hand and looked at Hugh thoughtfully.
"The Court of Owls proclaims itself the ancient guardians of Gotham, and their doctrines are filled with the worship of darkness, the worship of owls, and the pursuit of immortality, which leads them to believe in various gods."
Bruce walked to the console and quickly pulled up an encrypted donation file.
"Perhaps your energy form has triggered some underlying code in their brainwashing program. Or perhaps there really was someone like you recorded in that so-called court legend."
"You mean, I've inexplicably become the prophesied child of this group of underground madmen?" Xiu En pointed to his nose, and the halo flashed twice in response, making Claw almost cry.
Xiu En's eyes darted around, his initial surprise vanishing instantly, replaced by a charlatan-like demeanor.
He straightened his collar and adopted a compassionate and sympathetic posture.
He walked up to the claws and looked down at the assassin bound like a dumpling, deliberately controlling the metallic vibrations in his lungs to make his voice sound reverberant.
"Now that you have recognized my glory, why do you continue to wallow in darkness? Lost sheep, tell me where your stronghold is? If you speak of it, I will grant you, uh, the right to bask in the sun."
A look of struggle appeared on Claw's gray face, as if it were engaged in a fierce tug-of-war between some rigid command and the miracle before it.
