When dinner was served, Chang Dashan had just finished feeding the donkey, washed his hands, and sat down at the table.

Liu Meifen brought out the dishes one by one: stir-fried greens, stewed tofu, a plate of pickled vegetable shreds, and the bowl of peanuts that Chang Kun had brought back.

Xiuer had long forgotten about writing characters. She picked up her rice with her bowl, put a piece of tofu in her mouth with her chopsticks, chewed it a couple of times, and then suddenly remembered something. She looked up and complained to Chang Dashan.

"Dad, the canned food my brother-in-law brought home today stinks horribly! It stinks worse than a cesspool! I threw up after eating it!"

Chang Dashan paused with his chopsticks, glanced at Xiu'er, and curled his lips down, his expression clearly saying, "You young people are too delicate. Even canned food can smell bad."

He picked up his glass, took a sip, and put it on the table. His tone carried the confidence of someone with experience, as if he were lecturing a young person.

"What kind of awful food haven't we eaten? When we were starving, we've gnawed on tree bark and grass roots, even eaten clay. A can of food? How bad could it be?"

Liu Meifen chimed in from the side, "That's right, you people aren't hungry enough!"

"Back in the day, wild vegetable dumplings were mixed with chaff; swallowing them made your throat ache, and it was even worse when you pooped—that was truly awful! And elm bark powder, it was sticky and tasteless, making your stomach churn. Canned food? This is top-notch stuff, and you dare complain about it!"

His tone carried a touch of bittersweet nostalgia, but more so a disdain for the pampered nature of young people.

Seeing his parents like this, Chang Kun took the can of herring that was in the corner and put it on the table.

The can lid was still on, and the sealed-off smell hadn't come out yet.

He patted the can and chuckled, "You can eat it if you want, we're all full."

The girls' faces changed instantly when they saw the canned food being served.

Xiaoqing stood up with the bowl in her hand, took several steps back, and stopped at the kitchen doorway.

Xiao Mu followed her, hiding behind the door frame, only showing half of her face.

Xiao Shui was the most exaggerated; she squatted down under the persimmon tree with her bowl in hand and watched from afar.

Xiuer sat at the table without moving, but she leaned back so much that her body was almost bent into a bow, and her chopsticks were raised in the air, forgotten to be put down.

Chang Dashan glared at them, muttered "What's the big deal?", and reached out to lift the can lid.

The moment the lid was lifted, the sealed aroma surged out like a flood, even stronger and more pungent than when it was first opened, as if it had settled for a while and become more mellow.

Chang Dashan frowned sharply, his hand stopped on the can lid, and he froze.

Liu Meifen reacted even faster, covering her nose with her hand, her voice shrill and urgent as it escaped through her fingers: "What is this thing! What does it smell like!"

Chang Dashan had been stubborn his whole life, but he was too embarrassed to admit defeat in front of his daughters.

I forced myself to pick up my chopsticks, took a small piece of fish from the can, and put it in my mouth.

His mouth closed, and the expression on his face changed from resolute to pain.

He chewed once, twice, and on the third chew, before he finished, his Adam's apple bobbed up and down, and he swallowed it down.

After swallowing, his face turned pale for a moment. He picked up the wine glass and gulped down two mouthfuls before he could suppress the churning sensation.

Seeing his expression, Liu Meifen hesitated for a moment, then picked up a small piece, pinched her nose, put it in her mouth, chewed it a couple of times, and swallowed it with a bitter face.

She finished swallowing and put down her chopsticks, her voice filled with a relieved sense of relief: "My goodness! This shit! I'll never eat it again."

Chang Dashan's mouth was still hard, but he had lost his confidence, as if he was trying to find a way to back down.

"This stuff is great! It would be a shame to eat it all myself. I'll bring it to the police station tomorrow and share it with my colleagues."

Chang Kun chuckled: "Dad, you're actually a pretty good person..."

Chang Dashan glared at him. Otherwise, if his son hadn't been holding him there, he wouldn't have eaten such disgusting food!

"Let's not talk about this anymore, it's disgusting, do you even want to eat?" Liu Meifen put down her bowl and chopsticks, leaned forward, and lowered her voice by half an octave.

"Xiao Kun, let me ask you something. What's going on with that Sima Bin? It's been all over the supply and marketing cooperative these past few days. They say he got arrested for something related to insulting women, but nobody knows the specifics. You're at work every day, so you must know."

Chang Kun paused, his chopsticks still for a moment. "How has it been spread?"

"Everyone's talking at once. Some say he harassed female comrades, some say he bullied someone's wife, and others say he conspired with his brother-in-law to do bad things. It's all a mess." Liu Meifen gestured, her face full of curiosity.

Chang Kun frowned slightly. "What about other names? Has anyone suggested any?"

Liu Meifen thought for a moment and then shook her head.

"No, not at all. They only said that Sima Bin insulted women in extremely vicious ways and has been arrested. Nobody knows who the victim was, and we've never heard of any name."

Chang Kun breathed a slight sigh of relief and sent the four little girls off to play.

Chang Kun only spoke after his sisters had walked away.

He started by talking about Ma Wencai managing the slush fund, the disappearance of two pig thighs, the injury on Ma Wencai's wife's arm, and the words Ma Wencai shouted in public.

Finally, it mentions that Sima Bin sneaked into Ma Wencai's house in the middle of the night...

Upon hearing this, Liu Meifen's eyes widened, and her mouth remained agape for a long time.

"My God... this beast... We come from the countryside, what kind of messed-up things haven't we seen? But this kind of thing, drugging and then raping his brother-in-law's wife, we've never even heard of it, let alone seen it."

"That beast! He's so lucky! He was only born in the new society. If he were still in the countryside, the clan chief would have had him tied to stones and thrown into the river!"

Chang Dashan said with a serious face, "Don't go out and talk nonsense! Just listen at home, it's not good for anyone if it gets out! Especially that female comrade who was victimized, she has already suffered enough, we can't let her suffer twice."

Liu Meifen glared at him. "Do you even need to tell me? I'm not the kind of person who doesn't keep secrets."

Cheng Min sat next to Chang Kun, not moving for a long time. Her face was a little pale, her lips were slightly pursed, and her eyes were staring blankly at the dishes on the table, but she wasn't looking at anything.

As a new bride, she had never heard such shocking and sensational news before, and she was a little stunned.

Chang Dashan picked up his wine glass, took a sip, and changed the subject, "Old Zhu's peanuts are fried quite well, the heat is just right, better than the ones at home."

Liu Meifen also came to her senses. "Yes, let's ask them how they did it, and learn from them."

Cheng Min twitched the corners of her mouth, which could be considered a smile.

She still hasn't come to her senses. No wonder Chang Kun looked strange when he came back the day before yesterday; he was also angry.

I guess I don't want to tell myself because I'm afraid I'll scare myself.

Oh, that woman is so pitiful...
