Chapter 892 Reunion of Comrades
When I got home, I met up with Grandpa Hong.
"Uncle Hong, hold on tight, we're heading to Fengtai right now!" Chang Kun said, turning around as he mounted his bicycle.
"Okay, you ride yours, don't worry about me!" Grandpa Hong sat steadily on the back seat, holding the frame with one hand.
As he watched the scenery recede into the distance, Grandpa Hong's eyes gradually became unfocused, and he couldn't help but let out a long sigh.
"Sigh... I haven't been here for many years. Every time I step into this area, I feel so sad."
Noticing that Grandpa Hong was in low spirits, Chang Kun quickly smiled and tried to start a conversation to distract him:
"Uncle Hong, do you have any old friends or relatives around here? If we find the warehouse today, shall we drop by for a visit?"
"Relatives? What relatives do I have left?" Old Hong shook his head bitterly. "Now I'm just a lonely old man all alone!"
Undeterred, Chang Kun probed further, "When you were fighting the Japanese, didn't you have any comrades left in this area?"
"Sigh..." Grandpa Hong shook his head again, his tone full of vicissitudes.
"Some are dead, some are crippled, and almost all of my comrades from earlier years are gone. I only met Lao Sun, Lao Zhou, and a few others later."
The two chatted slowly and casually until Grandpa Hong's emotions calmed down a little.
Not long after, the car entered the Fengtai area.
Grandpa Hong's eyes suddenly lit up. He pointed to a dilapidated city wall by the roadside, his tone very excited:
"Xiao Kun, did you see that wall? I was hiding behind it, exchanging fire with the Japanese! If it weren't for that wall, my old life would have been blown to bits by their machine guns!"
Following the direction he pointed, Chang Kun nodded in agreement: "Uncle Hong, this wall saved our lives, it's a life-saving wall!"
"Absolutely, this is a lifesaver!"
"Hey! This big locust tree is still here!" Grandpa Hong suddenly slapped his thigh excitedly and pointed to a thick old locust tree by the roadside.
Chang Kun slowed down the car and asked curiously, "What's so special about this tree?"
"It's so particular!" Grandpa Hong's eyes gleamed with reminiscence.
"I was hiding in this locust tree when two Japanese soldiers happened to pass by. I jumped down and slit their throats one by one!"
"That was a huge windfall! We captured two good guns and two helmets... The Japanese equipment was really good! I used those guns and helmets for years, and they never broke!"
Once they arrived in this area, Grandpa Hong's mouth never stopped, as he talked incessantly about the battles of yesteryear.
Chang Kun wasn't impatient at all. He simply squeezed the brakes, stopped the bicycle, and slowly pushed it along, patiently listening to what he was saying.
After reminiscing for a while, Grandpa Hong gradually stopped talking and wiped his red eyes with the back of his hand.
He took a deep breath, and his tone became serious:
"Little Kun, I was lucky to survive back then, it was like I was given a second chance at life."
"But so many comrades have fallen here... You younger generation must not forget them!"
Chang Kun's smile faded, and he nodded with utmost seriousness:
"Uncle Hong, don't worry. Not only should our generation not forget, but future generations should remember even more."
As Chang Kun said this, he knew that the younger generation of children would not remember these heroes; they would only remember the birthdays of the dancing and singing stars.
Grandpa Hong took a few long breaths and finally suppressed his surging emotions.
He got back on his bicycle, pointed ahead, and said, "Let's go! I remember there's a Japanese warehouse not far ahead!"
After pedaling for another two miles, Chang Kun's view suddenly opened up to a vast, open field overgrown with weeds.
He stopped his bicycle, looked around, and saw nothing but weeds all around.
"Uncle Hong, this place..." Chang Kun asked with some doubt.
"Don't bother looking anymore, everything's gone." Grandpa Hong sat in the back seat and sighed deeply, his tone full of regret.
"Back then, in order to burn the Japanese supplies, one fire would have probably left this warehouse without a trace."
"Uncle Hong, where should we look next?" Chang Kun asked, turning around.
Grandpa Hong frowned, squinted, and thought carefully for a while. Suddenly, he pointed to the south of Fengtai:
"Over there! Let's go take a look over there. I remember there was a fairly large warehouse nearby; it seems like it was still there when we drove out the Japanese."
"That's great!" Chang Kun exclaimed, his spirits immediately lifted.
If we can find a large, intact warehouse, we can just throw the grain in there, then find a chance to inform my second aunt's husband, and then I won't have to worry about the rest.
Guided by Grandpa Hong, Chang Kun rode his bicycle through a densely packed residential area.
Just as we were about to reach our destination, a hoarse yet incredulous shout suddenly came from behind us.
"Ah! Isn't that Old Hong up ahead?!"
Grandpa Hong suddenly shuddered and quickly turned his head to look.
"You! You...!!"
Grandpa Hong didn't even have time to shout, completely ignoring that Chang Kun was still riding the bike. He braced himself with both hands and rolled off the back seat like a sack onto the ground.
"Hey! Uncle Hong!"
Chang Kun was startled and quickly slammed on the brakes, jumped out of the car, and looked back.
Grandpa Hong didn't even bother to brush the dust off his clothes. He struggled to his feet and stumbled back home.
"Little Zhao! Is that you?!"
"Old Hong!! It's me, Old Hong!!"
An old man, about the same age as Grandpa Hong, caught up from behind, panting, tears streaming down his face, and hugged Grandpa Hong tightly on the shoulder.
"Old Hong! Where...where is your arm?!" The old man's voice trembled as he looked down at Grandpa Hong's empty sleeve.
"Hey! Look at the question I asked. Back when we were fighting the Japanese, we were definitely all gone!" The old man chuckled, but tears kept streaming down his face.
"Where have you been all these years?! I thought you were long dead!"
"You little brat! I won't die even if you die! I lost my arm, so I went to see the King of Hell, but he wouldn't take me!" Old Hong laughed loudly, tilting his head back.
The two elderly people with white hair were so excited that they hugged each other tightly, crying and laughing, trying to release all the longing they had accumulated over the decades.
Chang Kun slowly pushed his bicycle back, not making a sound to disturb them, but simply standing quietly to the side and watching.
He roughly understood what was going on.
When old comrades-in-arms reunite, each believing the other is long gone, the excitement is beyond words.
