Erga was a little stunned by her barrage of questions.

Half his face was still pressed against the cold, frozen slush, and he was gnawing on snow chips. With great effort, he managed to twist his neck around and glare at her sideways.

"What do you mean I took you for?! All I did was leave before you finished talking, and you're acting like I did something heinous and immoral!"

"Yes, I burned down your house, I admit it! But the thousand yuan I left is enough for you and your mother to build two rows of bright, spacious brick houses! I also took care of your father, that gambling addict, by burning that dilapidated yard to the ground. You and your mother will be saved a lot of trouble in the future!"

The more Erga Zi talked, the more convinced he felt he was in the right. His head, which had been pressed down and unable to lift, stubbornly tilted upwards, veins bulging, as he shouted in his hoarse voice:

"And what do you do?! Yesterday, because of this mess your family is making, I banged my head until it bled, burned the soles of my feet, and when I got back to the village, my mother chased me all over the yard and whipped me. My butt is still burning hot and I can't even touch the bed! Today, even though I'm all injured like this, I still rushed to the clinic to bring you money and tell you everything that happened last night, afraid that you and your mother will be homeless in the future!"

"Just for this reason, if you see me, you should at least offer me a bowl of hot water and say something nice, or at least manage a thank you!"

"But what about you?!"

Erga Zi got more and more excited as he talked, stubbornly raising half of his head despite Liu Cuier's hand pressing hard on the back of his neck, his eyes wide with anger:

"I barely left, and you chased me out like you were killing an enemy! Without a word, you shoved me into a snowdrift and started whipping my ass—the one I got a beating from last night—hardly!"

"Liu Cuier, examine your conscience!"

"Who's being unreasonable between us?!"

"I should thank you?!"

Upon hearing this, Liu Cuier trembled with anger, her pretty face flushed red, and her eyes widened in shock.

"That's definitely not true!"

Erga Zi, with his neck stiff, was completely unaware of the impending disaster, and his mouth kept babbling:

"Those three dilapidated thatched huts of yours are probably antiques from the Qing Dynasty! They leak like a waterfall when it rains, and the plaster is practically falling off the walls! I set them down and gave you a thousand yuan in compensation; you could easily hire any construction team to build a row of bright, spacious tiled houses! Shouldn't you be thanking me?!"

"Thank you so much! Thank you so much! Thank you to your ancestors for eighteen generations!"

Liu Cuier's emotions, which had been building up all day, were completely ignited in that instant!

Without saying a word, she raised her hand and began to slap Ergaizi's back, shoulders, and buttocks like a storm:

"Slap! Slap! Slap!"

"I'll give you your grand brick house! I'll give you a Qing Dynasty antique! I'll give you a Water Curtain Cave!"

"Ouch! Stop hitting me! You crazy woman! It hurts like hell!"

Ergaizi screamed like a pig being slaughtered, thrashing about in the snow and mud, his hands desperately protecting his buttocks, howling at the nearby earthen wall in his hoarse voice:

"Dazhuang! Brother Dazhuang! Stop hiding and watching the show!"

"I saw you a while ago! Come and help me up! I'm going to be beaten to death by her!"

"Ahem... well..."

Two extremely awkward coughs suddenly came from behind the earthen wall not far away.

Immediately afterwards, Dazhuang, with his neck hunched, slowly and hesitantly shrank out from the corner.

His bull-like eyes darted back and forth between Erga Zi, who was being held down tightly on the ground, and Liu Cuier, whose face was full of menace. He scratched the back of his head and gave a couple of dry laughs, looking both honest and guilty.

"Well... I originally came to pick up Ga Zi and take him back to the village."

"But it seems like there's still something you haven't sorted out on here. How about I go outside the front gate, smoke a pipe, and keep an eye on the donkey cart? Once you've completely subdued him and everything's been sorted out, just call me!"

"Dazhuang! I'll fuck your grandpa!"

Erga was furious when he heard this. He kicked his legs in the snow and mud, yelling and cursing in his hoarse voice:

"Are you even my brother?! I could understand being guilty at first, but now you're sneaking off to the front door for a smoke?! She's practically beaten my ass to a pulp, and you're letting her keep cleaning up after me?! Get over here right now and pull her away!"

Dazhuang pretended not to hear, pulled his cotton hat down, chuckled, and turned to happily slip away to the front yard.

Liu Cuier was jolted awake by Da Zhuang's interruption and finally came to her senses.

She looked down and realized that she was practically straddling Erga Zi's lower back, her hands gripping his collar tightly, and the two of them were rolling around in the snowdrift like wrestlers.

What's worse, at some point, a large crowd suddenly gathered on the steps behind the health center, at the entrance of the boiler room, and along the path to the water room against the wall!

Patients carrying aluminum lunchboxes, nurses in white coats, old men basking in the sun with their hands tucked in their pockets, and several old women carrying vegetable baskets all craned their necks and crowded around the steps and brick piles, their faces all bearing meaningful smiles.

In an instant, Liu Cuier's pretty face turned bright red, the burning blood rushing to her head, and even her ears and neck turned bright red!

She jerked her hand off Ergaizi's collar as if she'd been electrocuted, and jumped off him in a fluster.

Liu Cuier frantically patted the snow and mud off her cotton trousers, wishing she could disappear into the ground. She glared fiercely at the ground, gritting her teeth and spitting in a low voice:

"Get up right now! You want to lie on the ground like a dead dog?!"

Erga Zi also noticed the group of people staring intently at the scene around him.

His dark face, wrapped in white gauze, instantly turned a liverish color, and his stubborn pride kicked in again.

He gritted his teeth, bracing himself against the icy, frozen ground with both hands, and struggled to pull himself up. The skin on his buttocks and inner thighs ripped open with excruciating pain, causing him to gasp for breath, but he remained defiant, brushing the black coal dust off his cotton-padded coat while glaring around with his neck stiff:

"What are you looking at?! Haven't you ever seen a couple fight before?! Everyone, disperse, go take your medicine or get your shots!"

The surrounding crowd did not disperse; instead, they burst into laughter.

When Liu Cuier heard him start spouting nonsense again, she was so angry she almost choked. She raised her cloth shoe and stomped hard on his heel.

"Ergaizi! If you dare spew filth from your mouth again, believe me, I'll really sew your lousy mouth shut with a needle and thread!!"

"Ouch—! Holy crap!"

Erga Zi, clutching his foot, hopped around on one leg in the snow, tears welling in his eyes from the pain.

"Liu Cuier, you tiger woman! I was just trying to help you out, and you stab me in the back?!"

Ignoring the blush on her face, Liu Cuier's fierceness took over again.

She stepped forward, grabbed Erga's tattered cotton-padded jacket sleeve tightly, and dragged him towards the main driveway without saying a word:

"Come on! Follow me to the front gate driveway! You're not leaving until you've settled that thousand yuan and last night's messy account!"
